Some of you might have spotted a thread on Bay 13, where the delusional Hodgepodge started out by claiming that Leigh Matthews is the AFL's Don Bradman, ie undeniably the greatest ever. Inevitably, discussion has turned to Matthews' reputation as a thug and sniper.

Believe it or not, Podgey is trying to claim that Matthews was a clean player. The Bruns incident was out of character, the one blot on Leigh's record.

Could any Dees fan who remembers the 1980s care to provide some details of what I recall as 2 notorious incidents, where Matthews attacked Stephen Smith and Peter Giles (in separate games), well behind the play?

Well... there was this one time, in the 1980's, when Leigh Matthews attacked Stephen Smith & Peter Giles in seperate games behind the play... There you go! All the evidence you need!

It's Bay13, you don't need proof to back-up what you post on there.

Wow! I was seeking some backup from some Melbourne fans who might recall the incident in question.

What exactly did you take offence at????
Don't take it personally mate. This board has had some conflict arising from the bay of late so it has become a sensitive area. It's been a source of trouble for a lot of people, namely BS and Wona33.

I don't think I was alive then. But I do remember Leigh Matthews took on a goal post once, but I think that was in play.

You are lucky Master (so young), Mathews got away with a hell of a lot during his career, but aggression & thuggery was accepted to a certain degree... The shot on Giles was criminal, much worse than the 'Bruns incident'..... It ruined a extremely good footballers career, (Mathews is a self absorbed prick, even till this day)

I cannot remember the incident, but as someone growing up during that time watching footy as a youngster, you are spot on. So much happened back then - it was simply 'part of the game'. I have pretty fond memories of Jacko doing some crazy stuff :D

Bay 13 is not worth the bandwidth that supports it.

The AFL, and every other sport that I can think of, does not have an equivilent of Don Bradman. He was simply the greatest sportsman to ever live.

The Stephen Smith incident happened right in front of me in the forward pocket (Hawthorn's) at the Eastern end of Princes Park.

Mathews spent a lot of time in the forward line and Smith was doing a great job on him (scragging and spoiling). The ball was around the wing and Smith was standing behind him when Mathews simply belted him in the face (I think it was an elbow). Even the Hawthorn supporters arouind us were stunned and went very quiet..

Smith was carried off but I can't remember exactly what his injuries were. From what I remember it took him a long time to recover and he was never the same player again.

It was a great pity that Mathews' carreer was spoilt with a few incidents like this because he was an absolutely fantastic footballer.

I was at that game.
Smith & Giles both did a Selwood, bent at the knees, and got taken high.

Leigh Matthews never deliberately hit anyone in his life!
