not particularly happy with the decision

but good for him... and hopefully he steps up and proves me wrong

He had most of this year to do that, and after a reasonable start he seemed to lose it again. He's just not quick enough to do the things his mind still tells his body he can do.

I just think it's time to commit to youth, we can't keep hoping these old champions just go on and on. Look at the state of our current senior side and injuries. Kennelly can't take a deep breath without putting his shoulder out, Crouch has struggled for the best part of two years, despite a good finish to 2008, Fosdike made one less-than-stellar appearance in seniors, Everitt's gone and we've still got to deal with Micky O, who was in his best form since 04-05 but geez, how much footy's he got left?
And then there's Goodesy and ROK, the former we KNOW has problems; the latter, well, he looked like he was carrying something the last six weeks or so of the season.

These older players aren't going to get faster, or come back more agile and athletic.

Leo Barry is still the second best defender at the club.
One on one, he is arguably even better than CB.

Where he has significantly gone down hill is his USE of the ball.
That's relatively easily rectified.
Don't run with the ball and reduce the handball.

Does anyone really believe LRT, Richards, Faulks, Murphy, White etc are better one on one defenders than Leo?

If there is no suitable match up, do what Collingwood did with Wakelin and 'rest' him.

Ooh, goodie, it's the boy in the bubble.

And how is Leo the pillar of our defence in 2008, going into 2009?
"Pillar" suggests something solid, reliable. Neither of which describes Leo these days.

I guess you dont agree then, oh well.

I cannot recall the last game Leo finished on top in a one-on-one battle.
As a defender, he gives away far too many free kicks when going one on one, and as a running player he gets caught with the ball too often, although he's not alone there.

But my main problem is that persisting with Leo means the development of a Faulks or Murphy is ******ed.

It's all very well to pick out the odd times Leo gets caught trying to do what most of the others don't do. Run & carry. That is what is required from good teams these days. Good news from where I stand. He had a very ggod year & you will see that he will poll well in the club B & F.

Go back & have a look at the first half of the final against North.
Who held us together until we were ignited by a couple of others in the 3rd Q.

Leaping Leo Barry!!!

Well done Leo!!:thumbsu:

If Leo is playing that role, why did we sign Marty Mattner?
Mattner, Kennelly and Malceski are supposed to be our running backs, yes?

AS for the "odd times" Leo gets caught with it ... those odd times stretch back at least two seasons.
What about his inability to deal with the hands-in-the-back rule, another flaw going back two years (remember first quarter, round 1 v Essendon 2006?)

Agree, people pick out the odd mistake, they dont watch the whole game/season.

Like, MOL, we will not know what we had when they are gone.

Both absolute stars

I hope he's prepared to spend a lot of time in the reserves.
Personally, I think he should have called it a day.

Couldn't agree more, he was appalling in 2008 - some of his decision making and awareness was well below AFL standard.

I am genuinly shocked at this decision.

I completely agree and have been saying the same thing all year. It's frustrating to hear the same people that want our team to play on and attack more criticise Leo because he happens to be one of a handful of swans players that actually have a crack and take the game on.

Welcome to the swans board my friend. It's always great to hear from intelligent opposition posters such as yourself.

Have a nice day :)

He's entitled to have a say. Geez, he's hardly trolling.
he has a similar opinion to mine, does that mean mine's worth shit too?

I'm not normally one to jump down the throat of opposition posters but this particular one has a history of bagging out the swans at every opportunity he gets.

He's entitled to his opinion on Leo and I'm entitled to my opinion of needle dick trolls.

Let me get this straight: you start a thread on Paul Roos using up all the points won for the 05 flag, and make mention of him giving the older players one last crack in 08, and I THINK you allude to possibly trading Baz Hall. I could be wrong on that last point but I think i'm right with the general gist of your Roos thread.
Yet here you are championing the re-signing for a year of probably the one bloke among Roos and that 05 crop that really SHOULD give it away.
Specifically, Leo's season was finishing on a downer. I'm sorry, you bring up the first half v the Dogs and I don't think he was particularly outstanding, but even if he was, compared against the backdrop of his whole season you can hardly be excited about building our future, or even our 2009 season, around the likes of creaky Leo.
yet you seem to want to trade Hall (ignore this entire part if that's not what you meant) and Baz played better this season than he's done for two years.

You seem to be contradicting yourself. If you're not, I withdraw this entire post.
