The Collingwood Football Club honoured 1990 premiership coach Leigh Matthews with life membership at Wednesday night’s annual general meeting.

Matthews coached the Magpies in 224 games over 10 seasons from 1986 to 1995, including the unforgettable 48-point triumph over the Bombers in early October of 1990, which ended the Magpies’ 32-year premiership drought.

His coaching feats at Collingwood formed part of what has been an amazing career in football. Before coming to Collingwood, Matthews forged a 332-game playing career with Hawthorn in which he played in three premierships, won eight best-and-fairest awards and was named the player of the 20th century.

After leaving the Magpies, Matthews went to Brisbane where he coached the Lions to three successive flags form 2001 to 2003.

He accepted his life membership in front of 600 Collingwood members in the Olympic Room at the MCG, and spoke glowingly of his time at the club.

Find that it be Funny there about Lethal back doing stuff with Collingwood Again and With the Pies Logo behind. We all remember 02-03

Good. :)

I must say, it does look strange with Eddie and the Collingwood logo behind him. I'm happy that he was rewarded for being the drought breaking coach.

Lethal is most deserving of this honour (3rd life membership) and good on the board for giving it to him. 1990 is obviously a fond memory, but 02'-03' still sting alot.

02-03 might sting but he never disrespected our club (unlike some of his players after the 03 debarcle).

Congratulations Leigh, it's well deserved.

Would be a nice touch if Gabby Allen was invited.

Better still, get him and Allen McAllister to sit up the front in tiny folding chairs, just like the good old days!!!

I used to like Gubby as a player even when he was at Fitzroy. He was a serviceable player for us.
I cannot forget a blunder he made in a game against Footscray. It was right in front of me. Collingwood in front by a couple of points with 30 seconds to go at Western Oval. Gubby gets the ball in dog's forward line kicks across the goal and I think straight to Simon Beasley, who marks and kicks a goal after the siren giving the dogs a win. I remember Jim Edmond who was Caption of the dogs giving it to him bad.
I seem to recall that Dennis Banks took the mark of the year in this game. Absolute screamer. Yep the good old days. :D

Its about bloody time, never got the idea that we wouldnt give him or others life membership if when the date of eligibility came they were associated with another AFL club.

Made me want to watch the 90 GF again, gratz Lethal, our greatest living coach.
