Beaten 6-2 6-4 by Volandri in Rome in the most insipid display I have ever seen from a world number one. If you think that is harsh, watch the match. His mind was obviously elsewhere, and he didn't fight at all.

For the record, Volandri first serves at 140km/h and has a very short bh . . . think Diet Robredo . . .

UPDATE: 7 Winners 52 Unforced Errors

what about hewitt losing the first round of wimbledon '03 to a guy who was unknown at the time really, the year after winning the thing.
In my opinion:

Federer 07 > Hewitt 03

And, more importantly,

Karlovic on grass >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Volandri on clay.

Karlovic's serve is the best shot in tennis, make no mistake.

Maybe he's picked up a few lessons from rafa who himself is pretty smart at avoiding Roger on any surface other than clay.

Perhaps being pretty much a one surface wonder is why he isn't no.1.

One surface wonder  3 masters series titles and a wimbledon final at the age of 20. Surely a one surface wonder  .Fed has peaked and will go downhill from here. He has also beaten federer twice on hardcourts

2 Masters finals in 3 events on his least favoured surface when clearly out of form proves he is finished?

Everyone suffers dips. He has to find answers and almost certainly will. To be honest I don't understand your animosity against Fed. Compared to him Nadal is a mere athlete with none of his elegance, lightness of touch or pure gift. It is to use a bball analogy like preferring a big thundering shaq like player to a lithe skillful Iverson, or in soccer preferring a bludgening player to a Best or a Pele.

Don't you appreciate beauty in sport?

Just because he is a legend it doesnt mean i have to like his game. I like grinders like Nadal, hard workers with street fighter mentality. Its just my choice and it doesnt mean i am degrading anyone.

Here is a question for you. Do you like one sided affair, where fed is 4000 points ahead of everyone, winning everything easily? or do you like some sort of competition or challenge which will make things interesting?

I love Nadal, his determination, his guts. Do you know he has won 20 out of 22 finals in his career? that is an amazing record for a 20 year old guy. Do you know what it shows? he is determined to do well and fight against all odds. Thats what i like. Personally i enjoy safin (when on song) rather than Federer, but these people are gifted, hence they dont have to work too hard on their game. I find Rafas game to be more attractive than Federer to be honest

Fair enough TP. Resilience and "stickability" is to be respected and is admirable. Nadal clearly has that. Also competition is good but in sport some talents go beyond the competitive and should be admired for their own sake.

Personally I'm not a fan of tiger woods. i like to see him beaten but his mastery of his game and his emotions while on the course is unrivalled. he is the ultimate major Sunday player. A master. I like to see him lose but do not glory in it. defeating him is a huge feather in any player's cap. equally federeer. he is the standard of excellence, the master of the game of tennis. were the number of clay and grass tourneys swapped he would be off the radar. by all means want to see competition and enjoy nadal's victories - even if they have dried up since RG last year - but always take the time stop and smell the roses and to enjoy the sheer verve and beauty of Federer's play when he is not hampered by slow clay.

Big deal, he will win where it counts most ;)

Where it counts most is Wimbledon, the undisputed No.1 event in the world.

Fed's winning streak there is at 28. Rafa's is err...what is it...Oh yes ZERO having lost to Fed in his last match there.

Where it matters most, when world attention is on the game as nowhere else Fed leads 4-0.

In Slam finals Fed is 10-1 a phenomenal strike rate unequalled by any of the greats in Slam finals.

Where it matters most the world No.1 wins more often than not.

Disagree. All 4 grandslams are equally important. In 50 years time people will look back and say, ok federer won 20 grand slams, it doesnt matter if its 10 wimbledon or 10 french open in it. Wimbledon can be the most valueable of all grandslams but at the end of the day, all slams are equally important. How many of us look back and ask...ok agassi won 1 wimbledon only, so meh? we all say, he won 8 slams including all 4 events.
