Having watched most of the eagles games this year - they seem 1-2 players short of a quality side especially quality midfielders. For the sake of a discussion lets assume the season finishes tomorrow and all teams points are as todays date meaning the eagles finish on 3 wins and qualify for picks 2, 4, 25, 41, 57 etc.
I am interested in the suggestions as to who would be best selections for WC at the pointy end of the draft knowing Melb have picks 1 and 3. I guess I am looking for a few early phantom drafts incorporating the top 4 selections in some type of order - knowing the requirements of WCE:)

Requirements for WC at the moment?

I wouldn't say we are too deficient anywhere. We need more time to develop what we have rather than have a direct need for new players. With respect to quality midfielders, totally agree at the moment. We do have Masten, Ebert, Shuey, Swift, Cockie and Smith all developing to be part of our future midfield.

2 - Another killer mid(can never have enough)
4 - Gorilla type forward
25 - forward crumber

Doubt we will delist enough to be more than 3 deep with rookie elevations for Cockie and Davis

First of all if the season was over we would have Picks:
2, 6, 25, 41, 57 etc.

Melb + WCE would get 1 PP each at start of first round and Freo + Richmond + North would get a PP after 1st round is complete.

With Melbourne having PP #1 I would think they would go with John Butcher, As even if WCE went for Scully with next pick they would still end up with a Quality Mid in Either Lucas, Swallow or Moribito to name a few.

So As I see it : If the ladder ATM was how it finished.
1)Melb- John Butcher- Butch and Watts in the Forward line is another Franklin, Roughy Combo and Melb will benifit as the Hawks have.
2)WCE- Kane Lucas- I think we would take him ahead of Scully for his Run and Carry ability.
3)Melb- Tom Scully- Should take him As he is sublime with his work.
4)Rich- Alex Keith- Need another Tall Kpp and he IMO would fit in nicely at Richmond. (Moribito another possibility)
5)Freo- David Swallow- Will take this prolific Ball winner if still available as he is a ready made player and with them Passing on Rich they wont let him Slip.
6)WCE- Anthony Moribito- Speedy Wingman who can Run and Carry Simular to the Way Adam Goodes Plays. (Thats also his Nick Name *Goodsey)
7)North- Allen Christensen- Prolific Ball winner + Natural Leader will go well with Ziebell in the Midfield and can go forward and kick goals as well.

To get Lewis jetta we would have to do a trade that will get us a early 2nd rounder or even a possible Priority pick as Freo will be sure to take him.
Our best Chance would be Brent Staker + pick 25 to Rich for pick 19.
IMO

Very early for even those with "extensive" knowledge of all the kids coming through to do a phantom draft, so ill take punts on who will probablly be available and when. Ill pretend we are currently sitting in 15th, Richmond should be finnish strongly and Fremantle will do enough to get above us. So even if we do get 5 wins i think we might end up being 15th anyway.

Option one.
Melbourne take Scully with thier first pick. We Swoop on Butcher with pick 2.
Melbourne take Stevens with pick 3. We take Morabito or Lucas with pick 4.

Option Two:
Melbourne Take Butcher with thier first pick. We Swoop on Scully with pick 2.
Melbourne Take Stevens with thier second pick. We take Morabito on Lucas with pick 4.

Alex Keath, Matera can be picked up by the Goldcoast this year, David Swallow and Toy are all ineligible to be drafted in the 09 draft.

Possible picks:
Pick 25: Hutchings (WA Small defender/ Midfielder), Joel Houghton (WA KPF), Bastinac (VicC Mid), Colyer (WA, Small Mid)
Looks light on small forwards, dont know what is out of the territory.

So if we dont make 5 wins, we get 2 top picks?
Lets do that.

I think we need a fast moving midfelid ball carrier, also indigenous talent either forward crumber, or half back flanker.

I would get that from the first two.
I think our youthful big men stocks are ok.
Spangher, Mckenzie, Natanui, Kennedy, the other big lazy forward.

Very deficient in midfield. The rest we look pretty good.

We do have Masten, Ebert, Shuey, Swift, Cockie and Smith all developing to be part of our future midfield.
Still very touch and go. Given we are trying to match/similate/emulate:

Judd, Cousins, Kerr
Judd, Gibbs, Murphy, Stevens
Ablett, Bartel, Corey, Selwood, Chapman,

The chances of those players developing into a midfield that good is slim. We still have to keep recruiting midfielders in order to play the law of averages. If we build that midfield then the forawrd line will fire. Notte, Lecras, MacKinley.

I'd probably go for all mids with those top 3 picks. Maybe a gun KPP forward if they are touted to be an absolute gun and a better prospect than the other mids left in the draft. Too early to be spending a 2nd round pick on a crumbing forward. There's always a midfielder who can do that role.

Crumbing forwards are often like parking inspectors (wannabe cops but couldn't pass the exam). Crumbing forwards like Milne and matera just couldn't pass the midfielder's exam.

Why the rush to pick up a crumbing forward?

Crumbing fowards rarely go before pick 30. Pretty sure the likes of Didak, Nathan Brown, brent harvey got drafted as mids but did their apprenticeship as crumbing forwards.

If we stock up in mids with our first few selections (mayve a KPP) and then in 1 or 2 years time we are starting to look good we can always draft a crumbing forward then. Plenty of time and opportunity to draft crumbing forwards, not so with core mids.

I honestly cant believe some of you guys think you will get a priority pick. You play richmond twice, and the kangaroos at home along with essendon.

THere is no chance you will be winning 4 or less games.
Your a much improved side and you will continue to develop well and win games this year.

I expect you to finish with 5-6 wins this year

I would be very surprised if we win 5 games this year. Call me cynical, but if we get much further into the season and have still only won 4 games, you might find we struggle to win too many more.

Disagree. These are the winnable games not wins.

Richmond, Away Round 12. Will lose.
Melbourne Away Round 14. Will lose.
North Home Round 20. Will Win.
Richmond Home Round 22. Will tank.

Cant see us winning away, unlike 90% of this forum i rate Richmonds cattle and beleive come round 22 will be above 4 wins. I have you on 3 wins come round 22.

I agree we have no chance of getting PP but I think most people are aware of that. We can only hope though.

Scully & Butcher seem 1 and 2.

I think Melbounre will go Scully, they may go Butcher first to create a twin tower senario like the hawks.

Having Watts & Butcher would be a scary combo.

But Scully is still ahead of Butcher at the moment.

Our second pp pick will definately by a Mid.

Koby Stevens, Kane Lucas, Anthony Morabito

Pick 25 I would take Lewis Jetta he's no midget 181.5cm's or a Alex Carey

Pick 41 Travis Colyer the fact he is a midget only 175cm's means he will slide

Pick 57 Nicholas Winmar lots of outside running pace.

Didn't we only win 4 last year?

I remember playing for the extra pick... pick 18. But two top 5 picks is mouthwatering, imagine that last year.
Yes we only won 4 last year and we got the post first round pick because that was our first season under four wins. This season would be the second season of 4 or less wins, therefore we get the pre 1st round selection.

Thats why i said consecutive ;)

Actually EA - you have contradicted yourself here. Melb and WCE would gets PP picks BEFORE 1st round (meaning picks 1-4), whilst Freo, Rich and NM would get picks AFTER 1st round (meaning picks 19-21). So I stand by my original draft order.

1) Does this change your draft selection order ?
2) Assuming Butcher goes 1 and the belief that Lucas and Scully are equally valued (therefore WCE go with home boy) and therefore Scully at 3 - how would WCE next pick go ?

Scully is not deemed the equal of Lucas, neither is Butcher. From reading the reports on the Drafts and Trading page, Scully is the clear number 1 target by the majority of the recruiters. They all hedge their bets by saying that "of course that can change", but by the way the kid sounds like he prepares himself he'll be a fair number 1.

This is my understanding as well.

Wait for the draft camp, Scullys 20m sprint and agility tests will give a clear indication of how good he is and if he has the ability to mix it with the best at afl level. From all accounts he does.

So beyond Scully.

Koby Stevens is one to watch, is taller and harder than Scully from all accounts and is a well rounded footballer. Plays for Vic Country so we wont get a look at him directly, Speed, toughness at the contest, excellent foot skills.

Anthony Morabito i rate now ahead of Lucas, with quesiton marks over his kicking at times. Outside midfielder who is strong at the contested ball, super quick, ultra clean of the deck. Decent vision but can be a bit hungry.

Lucas, incredible kick of the football. Slight frame, big tank and nice height. Essentially i rate Morabito because of his inside work and break line ability. Lucas has it but Morabito is exceptional and coming of a wing would be damaging at the center breakdowns. Overlook him based upon what it think we currently "need".

Jordan Gysberts, Fast, tall and clean by hand and foot. Good in traffic and good over head. Could go second round?
