Liberatore wants to be an assistant coach at an AFL club. I believe the club should try and get him. He will be a worthwhile asset to the club. He was an excellent couragous, superb player and can offer a lot to the young players coming up and also the rest of the team. We should grab him while we can. Doesn't matter about the trouble he got into on the field, he was a great player and will always be remembered as a great player and one which in the long run will make a very fine coach. Lets hope the club get him.
 
I agree, SB.

Liberatore was an excellent player, and would probably be able to offer a lot in an assistant coaching role. He always impressed me with his hard-working attitude, and likewise, his ability to overcome his limitations and set-backs, and be one of the best players in the league, of his type (over a long period of time).

I can imagine that a lot of Lions supporters may be against the idea, due to former relations between the various parties involved. However, I don't think Lions fans can really complain about some of Liberatore's supposed tactics, especially considering some of the similar tactics being used by some of our own current players!
 
Would not want Libba anywhere near the Gabba. There are many better potential assistant coaches in the ranks of the retired. Libba never had a great tactical football brain, he just pushed the boundaries of the rules as far as he could. He is the worst example of a footballer I have ever seen, he went from one of the most admired players after his Brownlow (even though he was nowhere near the best player in the league) to one of the least respected.

If the Lions were to go for a new assistant, although I doubt we need to change anyone, you couldn't go past John Blakey!

There was a rumour that Gary O'Donnell was returning to Essendon as Football Director but that position has since been filled I believe.

He would be the only one that may leave I would think.
 
Well personally I think the Lions could do with an upheaval in the coaches' box. Watching "From the Lips of Lethal" on Fox the other night, I was struck by how little any of Lee's assistants added. I know they probably do great things at training, and leave match day up to the head coach, but two of them sounded like absolute morons. They cam to conclusions everyone else had figured out 5 minutes ago, and i can't remember Matthews taking a single one of their suggestions.
BTW I thought it was a great idea from Foxfooty. I never knew how involved a coaches job really is. From the Lions setup it looked like the assistants basically do nothing in the box, so they just conduct training with specific positions and talk to their particular group at quarter time, etc. If i was a senior coach I think I'd want at least one assistant in the box who could help me out with positional changes, etc a la Mark Harvey at Essendon. Obviously I'm not saying the Lions should get LIbba, but rather someone smart with senior coaching aspirations who retired this year. Any ideas?
 
LIBBA!!! No way. Can you seriously see any of our current list having any respect for this guy? I am sure Fly would just love to rock up to training and be coached by the guy who tried to gouge his eyes out!! I'd rarther see Noddy or Mickey Mouse sitting alongside Leigh!
 
I personally have got nothing against Libba. I like the bloke, I like the way he played the game and I believe that he is going to be an excellent assistant coach and in the long run a fine coach. We all can't live in the past. He did what he did and anyone would be crazy not to consider him at a club.

Gotta be the worst post I've read this year! (no Offence intended)

Libba was just a monkey for Wallace, he was never a thinker nor was he someone to be respected. There is no hope in hell he will ever coach at senior AFL level. Might get a charity role with the Dogs, but that is tops for the filthy dog.

Ok so you like him and I hate his guts.

Irrespective of personal feelings towards him, I just don't see what attributes he has that makes you so sure he will turn out to be such a great coach.

Just because you admire the way he played, doesn't mean he will somehow have the qualities needed to coach at AFL level.

Many really fine players turned out to be dud coaches. Didn't Jesalenko have a go at coaching at one stage and fall in a heap?

I just don't get it.

Umm, well, gee . . . I'm not sure, although I'm pretty certain that punching and kneeing (especially to the testicles) are pretty serious incidents as well. :o
 
I'm not sure that any change is required at the moment (G O'D must get a go at senior coach somewhere sometime though). If it is, it might be worth sounding out Brenton Phillips, who just coached Sturt to their first flag in 30-odd years and who was a star in the Bears' inaugural game.

He has all the attributes that a coach can have. He has experience in coaching, even though he has been coaching an under 12's side. He has great people skills, players and most fans respect him, he knows his footy, he will be good for the young players coming up, he has great communication skills, he has played under arguably one of the best coaches in the league in Terry Wallace IMO, he knows what he's doing, he is a hard worker and he will therefore make a good coach in the long run and an excellent assistant coach next year for the club.

That is not my reasons in which why he would be a good coach. I don't think someone would be a good coach because I admire the way he plays, I think someone would make a great coach due to the attributes they display in that role and Libba displays them all.

Libba will be a great assistant coach and the club should try and get him. He will be a coach at an AFL club in about 5 years time.

I do not want Wallace's type of game, anywhere near our boys.

Why would a wonderfully coached and organised side like the LIONS need a boof head like LIBBA, the LIONS are tough enough to take crap from any team without being down right crazy. SO GO AWAY LIBBA !:mad: :mad: :p :o
 
I could see Brisbnae losing members if they had Libba on board in any capacity. The fans hate him with a passion.
I know I would be really disgusted at our decision making if they had him at the club.

Bit early for Phillips. This year was his first at the SANFL (I think). Last year he was coaching in the ammos in SA.

Libba may offer something - good suggestion whomever mentioned that old Roy in John Blakey.
