Let's go Australia, Olympics thread

Anyone else notice how Gian Rooney curses almost any athlete she commentates? I blame her for single-handedly jinxing our swimmers.
"I like how relaxed she looks."
"Look at her smile, she looks good."
"His/Her stroke looks powerful, he/she's in a great position."

I could go on. Someone needed to stop her. Every time something good came out her mouth we shat the bed.

Have a good feeling about the Boomers, think they will at least make the gold medal match.
They're up and about. Beaten some high quality sides recently .

Absolutely pumped for this one.

Any reason you are still watching? Isn't the Olympic team just wasting your tax dollars?
Boomers are professional and I expect will have some pride in their performance.

Can't see Bogut saying " My self worth isn't based on the amount of points I score...sniff"

After staying up all last night and being burned by the opals im not staying up. I will just catch one ofthe 50 full match replays tomorrow if we win.

I stayed up and watched it, woke up at bloody 530 this morning and couldn't get back to sleep.

Long day at work, but I'm keen to watch the Boomers.. I should stop posting on here, and sneak in a quick nap!

Bullshit, someone said that?

Our men's side don't appear to be blowing sunshine up each other's arses, which is a positive.

Just wow. On one hand you want Australia to perform better, but on the other you don't quite understand the dedication and sacrifice required to even qualify for the Olympics. If everyone had your attitude we would have an Olympic team the size of one of those pacific islands.
I actually shared Uni accom for a semester with a gold medallist who was training for the following Olympics. Always be careful what you write on the Internet when you have no clue of the recipients life experiences. You could come off looking silly.

So yes I've seen first hand the dedication it takes. So what? Do you think our sailors are less dedicated? Do they get funded to the tune of 40m?

Making them sound like poor down trodden souls is ridiculous, they may not be on NBA money, but they are well looked after by the tax payer.

Relative to the money expended they are unquestionably the failures of the games - twice in a row

What about everything else they receive though. Media attention, televised swimming trials, possible massive sponsorships, dieticians, movement specialists, sports scientists, amazing training facilities, personal coaches and millions upon millions invested in their sport. Compare that to a sport like sailing and it's embarrassing the gulf in actual achievements compared to dollars spent. Not every swimmer will make it rich but the positive far and away outweigh the negatives.

How many get those massive sponsorships? Those are generally only after you have been successful. Before that, you will need the dieticians and movement specialists and sports scientists and to pay for the coaching and the training venue time as well as those other specialists. Who pays for those in the first place?

A lot of the spend from the Federal Government and the National Sporting Body happens after that athlete has actually achieved something. Also, the sponsorship and costs for the televised trials would not go to the athletes competing - who would have to pay entry fees etc, but to the National Sporting Body. What would trickle down to the athletes is nothing from the money coming in there.

There is a lot of complete misconceptions going on in this thread about what it takes to achieve at the highest level and the cost.

His interview after losing to Team USA has been in stark contrast to pretty much every other one I've seen. No excuses, just ****ing pissed off with losing.

They are also paid millions of dollars and play in the best league year round, but yes, very comparable to the swimmers otherwise.

Read this Peter J, and you may want to take your own advice and not make assumptions about people based on an Internet forum.

Mo Farah is a remarkable athlete, has to be one of the best long distance runners to have lived (obviously for the level below marathons).

Look, your defence of the swimmers is admirable but the reality is they have failed badly here as they did in London. I was pleased today to read that the govt will be reviewing the funding arrangements.

Have to ask though, if we cut funding then things won't improve. I'd like to see a restructure rather than a cut.

Caster Semenya about to run, can she handle the pressure ?
