Baby steps and realistic expectations of the group is is something we should all keep in mind.
I'm sure that if we all went back to round 8 and assessed what we would consider a positive result for the year, the answer would have a been, hopefully a couple of wins and consistent and noticeable improvement from the team as a group, and the younger players in particular.

To make statements like "I fully expect to win this week...." (yes, I mean you RT) is just being an Unrealistic Tiger (Hmmm why does that ring a distant bell).

My only desire is that we are still running at the final siren and that the team as a collective can walk of the ground at the end of the game with heads held high and the Tiger army is proud of the fact that their boys again played their guts out regardless of the result.
This year an honourable loss against a top 4 side is more than most of us considered possible about 6 weeks ago.
Lets just enjoy the development and appreciate the effort and if they happen to win a few then we can celebrate accordingly.

Agree, our main goal always has been and still is getting games and developing the kids. But with winning comes the expectation that you will keep winning, now I would be stoked if we beat Freo and I really hope we do. But as long as we bring the intensity we have for the last 5 weeks tomorrow night, I'll be happy. As long as we walk out of the dome feeling proud and knowing the boys gave their all, we'll be happy.

There will still be some ups and downs but we have seen enough this season to suggest we are on the right track. In saying all that, if we play like we have over the last 5 weeks, I have no doubt we will go extremely close to beating an injury depleated Dockers.

yes, and in that vein.. do we have any more young players to blood this year? should we be getting some of them onto the park even if it means dropping some players in reasonable form?

6 weeks ago we would have been going into this game hoping to be competitive, our good form and Freos unfortunate run with injuries should give us plenty of reason to go into the game confident of a win. Don't forget we were 5 goals up against this mob at Subiaco back before the Hawks game and they were in much better condition and form. The last few weeks they have been hit hard by injury having lost 2/3 of their best 6 backmen and their best onballer outside Sandilands. I make no apologies for expecting a win tomorrow night, but rest assured if we get beaten tomorrow night I won't be jumping on here and ripping into the side because they let us down as I still realise that as a young side there will be days where we will have a bad game. Hopefully that won't be tomorrow.

5 weeks ago I didn't think we'd win a game. I am being completely honest. I thought we had 16th sewn up.
We have now won 4 games and are 15th.
Whatever happens tomorrow...happens. But we are making excuses already just in case we lose.
Nothing less than a win is acceptable.

I hope for a win and truely think we can win but at the same time there I think saying anything other than a win is unacceptable is being a bit un-tugga of you.
In all remaining games this year I think it is far more important that we are competetive and can play games out to the final siren.
This is something we have not donw for many a long year.
Even in 95 when our season finished in that rather emotional game at Waverley we still managed to get totally flogged 4 times that year.
If we lose every remaining game this year but are competetive to the death then I will be very satisfied with the improvement and what the future holds for us.

Dropping players who are doing their job is not on. Easy for us to sit back and suggest that, but these guys are busting their guts week in, week out. To then tap them on the shoulder and inform them that despite their effort and good form, they are having a rest to let some untried kid have a go, and give them an opportunity to take their spot.

There are a couple of players on the list still yet to play and they will likely get their opportunity. But they will earn it and not be handed it on a silver platter (I would hope).

Agree with most of that RT but still say having a win as an expectation is still expecting more than what we (the RFC) is all about for the remainder of this season.
High expectations can, and often do, lead to major disappointments.
Maybe I've just been following the Tigers for so long that I have this inbuilt self preservation mechanism that unconciously controls my attitude to where we are at.

That is actually very well put. Not often I am stopped in my tracks on BigFooty, but this is it.
What I was trying to say, but poorly, was that we must expect victory from now on. Nothing less should be accepted.
But I do realise that we are not the finished product yet.

My only hope is that we have learnt from past mistakes. In the past when we have shown something the club has thought we were well on the way and only needed topping up this has hurt us as much as wasting picks has because instead of picking good kids that would take us forward we have traded and taken players for instant fixes.

So far everything we have seen is a side that is heading in the right direction but the major test will be at the end of the season regardless of where we finish but what we do at the trade and delisting tables. To date the club has said that picks will be kept unless it is an exceptional situation and that is what we need to do all we have to do is wait and see.

Indeed. List management ultra important over the next few years. Will be the difference in whether we build a team capable of challenging for finals and a premiership in 3-4 years or whether we continue our constant cycle of rotating from 9th to 16th.

Nothing wrong with expecting a win. I had faith in the talent of our list and knew once the 4 or 5 kids in our weekly side had about 10 games each they would start playing with confidence and we'd be playing as a team. It's no fluke we have won 4 out of 5 and we should be expecting our boys to be too good for Freo in front of our home crowd

Its all good mate, been fighting my own self preservation mechanism for the past couple of weeks. The funny thing is that although I expect a win tonight, I wouldn't be surprised if we got blown away either.

Beg to differ Barnzy, IMO development will be the difference between making the grade and yo-yoing between 9th & 18th.

don't think there is anything inherently unhealthy about continuing to raise the bar when we;re talking elte sport T67. Sure a couple of months ago we would have been happy to win a damn game, that was then this is now. Called progress, I go into this game optimistic that we can take the points for a whole lot of reasons. In most peoples eyes we are still LONG shots, to me that is ignorance. The TIGERS will WIN tonight, get used to it:thumbsu:

I don't disagree with any of this Bo.
My point was not really directed at posters like yourself that are moderate in your opinions but more for those that go from one extreme to the other on the back of the results of a single game ie elation when we win and suggesting we have arrived to the other extreme of losing and having no hope and no irection.
We both know that we have quitre a few posters that fit into this catergory.
I don't think there is anything unhealthy about raising expectations but lets do it in a realistic and measured manner so as not to hit the wall when things don't quite go our way, which you have to expect with such a young inexperienced list.
I do however think that the future is brighter now that it has ben for a long long long time.

Was not meant to sound like a lecture and as for being a glass half empty kind of guy..... Well I'm not.
Perhaps a bit moderate but never the less positive in outlook.
If you have ever taken any notice of my posts in the past you would be well aware of this.
I didn't get your reference to the Tigers being a possibility for the finals as I cant recall anyone metioning the finals in this thread.
Next year however I think that fianls are a real goal that should be met.
