After a year of some posters/supporters scratching their heads and yelling "There's no game plan", let's share what we think the game plan is and/or what it should be.
It would be good if a single post only included one of the lines (e.g. backs) and then backed up by subsequent posts relevant to other lines. Just being mindful of essays that some (including me) can write at times.
Put your coach's hat on, grab a board and go for it.

Coach Checkside

I reckon I saw Buckley's plan not being executed very well. Shorter kicks through the middle to a leading target were often butchered. Our half forwards didn't work hard enough to straighten us up.
Hard working half forwards are going to be paramount to the plan and perhaps the tonic to cure the long bomb to a 3 on 1 contest, in the opposition's favour.
More after others have had a go.

Get the ball at halfback/fullback (reid/scharenberg/Keeffe intercepts).

from half back through the center with pace (Young Swan Armstrong Kennedy Broomhead Marsh Mooney Sinclair Harry Freeman), run in waves and support each other.

Deliver to White/Cloke/Fasolo/Elliot.

Win more clearances than you lose with ball pendlebury adams JT and Grundy

Rinse and repeat

As my game plan change idea is not so region specific I won't specify back/mid/fwd.

But the amendments: Re-introduction of the forward press and the full commitment to it's implementation of all. More stoppages through the front half and midfield particularly. Less outside ball seeing as we don't have the personnel to execute better than the next team on the outside.

Only way we're a top 4 side.

Stay as we are and we're at risk of missing the top 8 with the least inside 50 stoppages, so few stoppages and such an uncontested gamestyle.

I think we were close to last in the AFL for defensive rebound 50s in the league, that's a much more pressing issue imo considering we also lost shaw and harry is getting older

Our forward line actually functions pretty well, just need to be more accurate with shots on goal.

Find a player with the foot skills who can take the kick ins,a la Leon Davis, for a start.

Our fwd line structure and movement last year was horrid and not helped by the poor kicks into it.

The training drills I've read of running in waves gives hope of a Hawthorn style swarm from the backline. Unfortunately we don't have their amount of precision ball users so its likely to include handpassing.

Mick is that you?

(only joking NM ;))

It's an excellent thread and we'll see how hard it is to construct a scenario, even from a kick-in situation.
It's very difficult to do so and that's part of the reason why I started the thread. If we can talk of an absence of a game plan, then we must know what one is. Time to throw our ideas out there. There are a couple of rippers already.

Sounds good.
I think the key is the quality of a lead that is made for the bloke who has the ball. With some work that I did with a local club, I was manic in putting the onus the bloke making the lead to make sure that the pass was a relatively simple one. In that, I meant that majority of the effort has to be made by the player who really wants the ball. Half arsed leads provide poor options and I often questioned how much the offending player really wanted the ball or knew about leading patterns.
On too many occasions I saw Pies forwards standing around looking like they were lost and then plugged up space. Allowed opposition to put numbers back and meant hesitation or just a nothing kick.[/quote]

Agreed Check I think it was connected to the malaise infected the whole club last year, hopefully the cuts to disruptive elements and recruitment of eager and talented youngsters will be enough to inject new focus and direction into a team that was a trifle unfoccused last year.

We were 2nd in the AFL for marks inside 50, but ranked 15th for goal kicking accuracy. I think this shows our forward line is working pretty well however we are just missing lots of shots on goals.

Hence the goal kicking practice during training, not before or after as if its an afterthought.

Probably need some analysis of where those marks were taken. May point towards shots taken from wide or beyond 40. Any idea?

Grundy - Swan - Goal.

Grundy - Beams - Goal.

Grundy - Pendles - Cloke - Goal...

Excetera... Excetera...
What the hell happened to
Grundy - Goal.
