Jurrah nearing AFL debut
http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/7415/newsid/78510/default.aspx
FIRST-year Demon Liam Jurrah is getting closer to an AFL debut after another strong performance with Casey Scorpions in the VFL on the weekend.

The 20-year-old, recruited from Yuendumu in Central Australia, has shown some impressive form in recent weeks.

He kicked four goals in Casey's win over Werribee Tigers on Saturday, on the back of three majors against Geelong the previous round.

Casey coach Peter German praised Jurrah's efforts.

"Liam was terrific in the first half," he told melbournefc.com.au.

"He ran and chased, showed composure to kick goals and was really important.

"Liam's really starting to come on in leaps and bounds and if he continues his development, he's a strong chance of playing senior AFL footy down the track."

Asked how far away he is from debuting for the Demons, German said: "It depends on where [Melbourne coach] Dean Bailey sees the side."

Jurrah's progression has been a positive one this season, after he was the first player selected in last December's NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft.

He also had a taste of life in Victoria last season, when he played four VFL matches for Collingwood.

Jurrah pushing for call-up

MELBOURNE could unleash another debutant – Liam Jurrah – for its only Friday night clash of the season, against Essendon at Docklands, according to coach Dean Bailey.

On the back of last year's No.1 NAB AFL Draft choice Jack Watts debuting in round 11, Jurrah could become the fifth Demon to debut this year, also joining Jamie Bennell, Kyle Cheney and Neville Jetta.

Jurrah, the No.1 pick in last year's NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft, has impressed in recent weeks for Melbourne's VFL affiliate side Casey.

The indigenous forward from Yuendumu in Central Australia has booted 11 goals in the past three matches for the Scorpions to be right in the mix for Melbourne's first match in the second half of the season.

"Liam's form in the last couple of weeks has been pretty good, so he's obviously under some consideration for this week," Bailey told melbournefc.com.au.

In a wide-ranging interview, Bailey also confirmed that No.1 draft pick jack watts, who made his much celebrated debut against Collingwood in round 11, would back up for a second senior match against Essendon on Friday night.

"For Jack's first game, he got a really important taste of it and feel for the game," Bailey said of Watts' Queen's Birthday debut against the Pies.

"He's very competitive and has a real inner drive, so I reckon it was a great opportunity for him and I reckon it's going to hold him in good stead.

"He'll play against the Bombers on Friday night."

On the injury front, Bailey doesn't expect livewire forward Austin Wonaeamirri to play for at least another month and he would be surprised if defender Colin Garland, who has been sidelined with a foot injury since round two, reappeared in 2009.

"Aussie has had terrible luck. He tore a lateral meniscus and at the moment, he's still rehabbing, so he's probably another three or four weeks away from training and playing. From round 16 onwards, I'd like to think he'd be available," Bailey said.

"Just before the Hawthorn NAB Cup game down in Launceston in February, Aussie was flying and had set himself up for a fantastic year, but he's had a hamstring and now this injury. It was going to be a promising year, from what he had build on last year."

"I doubt Col will be able to come back and play this year. It would be a huge effort from him, but [it's a matter of] whether we put that pressure on him. He's out of the boot and he's starting to swim."

Re: 48. Liam Jurrah

Jurrah is the new Buddy ( better/ more mobile ) This kid will be better than Watts. He's one of my favorite players in the AFL -
Look for big things from this kid cause he is a massive massive talent. Would like to see him playing on the wing/ HF.

Ligheting quick, plays tall, is agressive, great decision making and has excellent kicking skills...Hope that he can dominate in 2 years...

If you want to see Liam playing at home in Yuendumu and other communities from a few years ago - check out the DVD @

He's the one taking the mark on the cover.

I don't want to give away the ending... but keep an eye out for him in the final seconds of the last game.

Re: 48. Liam Jurrah

Hey mate, would you be able to tell me what number he is there? His jumper is scrunched up at the back so I can't tell if it's 13 or 15.

If it's 13 then we have that available since Yze left (I'm pretty sure that nobody took it). If it's 15 then it's taken by Petterd. I do like the 48 though....

Re: 48. Liam Jurrah

Sorry for being late with this, but here goes ;)

Round: 12 vs Essendon

Stats: 11 disposals @ 64% efficiency (8 kicks, 3 handballs), 6 marks (1 contested), 1 free against, 2 contested possessions and 8 uncontested possessions, 3 tackles, 3 inside 50's, 1 goal, 2 behinds.

Game Time: 76 Minutes.

My Thoughts: Liam Jurrah was rewarded his debut after consistent performances for Casey. In his first game on Friday night he seemed to find the ball early and appeared rather lively throughout the game. His first kick in AFL football was a shot on goal which turned out to be the story of the demons night, "an unlucky touched on the line" behind. I was quite impressed with the way Liam was able to have a run around the ground and have a pretty solid performance on debut. He had a few possessions up the ground and looked very good but it wasn't until he pushed forward, that our faces really lightened up. Being 10 points down "Liam Jurrah, with his family watching in the stands, flew high for a mark in goal square and while he couldn’t snaffle his spectacular attempt, his finish while falling to ground brought the loudest cheer of the night." His first ever goal in AFL footy suddenly had the Dees within 4 points! Unfortunately from there we were blown away, But Jurrah was definetly one of few positives. He showed spark and a very exciting glimpse of what to expect in the future. He has a great vertical leap, his kicking on goal is excellent and his freakish ability is yet to be shown at full force, but this Key Position Forward looks to be extremely talented. The number 48 looks to be a future fan favourite among many things, but after only one game...the best is yet to come ;)

Rating/10: 7/10

Does he keep his spot?: Definitely. Liam Jurrah did everything expected of him plus a little more. For his debut game, I thought he was fantastic. We got a Saturday night game next week against the Lions, so hopefully he can push forward again and contribute to the scoreboard which has been lacking as of late. We've got a massive task ahead of us keeping the likes of Brown and Bradshaw down on the other end, so hopefully players like Jurrah can even the score at ours. He kicked 1 goal, 2; with the 2 behinds touched right on the line. He was very unlucky and should have had 3, but definetly looks the goods.

Extra Comments: I'm convinced Jurrah will take Mark Of The Year ;)

Re: 48. Liam Jurrah

Nice sum up SMD, I wonder if Jurrah could be the first player to take "Mark of the Year" and kick "Goal of the Year" in the same passage of play? He almost did it when he kicked the goal.

Thanks Dez! :D

As for the bolded text, it wouldn't surprise me. His goal in the goal square was Gold!
(thing is though, it should have lifted the team...not deflated it :()

Re: 48. Liam Jurrah

Round: 13 vs Brisbane

Stats: 8 disposals @ 62% efficiency (6 kicks, 2 handballs), 5 marks (1 contested), 0 frees against, 1 free for, 3 contested possessions and 5 uncontested possessions, 1 tackles, 1 inside 50's, 1 goal, 1 behind.

Game Time: 84 Minutes.

My Thoughts: Coming off an 11 disposal debut last week, Jurrah was only able to snare 8 this week in a disappointing Melbourne side. Even though his numbers were a little lower then last week, he continued to look dangerous wherever and whenever he was seen. He kicked another goal which was good and just sprayed the other. When the team as a whole played the way they did it's very hard to extract positives from the game but Jurrah seems to have the X factor. He could do anything at anytime and even though he couldn't pull any tricks out of the bag tonight, he doesn't seem far from it. He seemed to be alot harder at the ball this week, he got his hands dirty and fought well in the packs. I was certain Jurrah layed a few tackles but his stats say he only got one, maybe I'm wrong, I dunno. He nearly took a very good mark in between two Lions but just fumbled it at the last second. He has an amazing leap and it's going to be something special when he eventually starts hanging on to em. The surprise packet may have taken a step down in regards to his performance last week but, he still looked dangerous and did enough in a side that didn't seem to give a shit for the most part. One of few shining light's again :thumbsu:

Rating/10: 6/10

Does he keep his spot?: Definitely. Once again he did everything right and has no reason to be dropped. He kicked another goal and again looked promising anytime he got near the footy. Can't wait till we see some freakish talent unleashed, the Jurrahcane is brewing and every week it seems to be building more and more till eventually... It shall explode. Very exciting times ahead... in terms of Jurrah that is ;)

Extra Comments: West Coast Beware, your in for a Jurrahcaneing! :D

Re: 48. Liam Jurrah

It's good to see after 3 games back in the seniors that his injury didn't seem to damage Liam's confidence at all and he is stretching ok for marks so a good recovery all round. :thumbsu:

Re: 48. Liam Jurrah

Really want to see Liam put a full year together.

36 goals from 16 games now, and there's no doubt he could be a 40-50 a year goal kicker next year if he can keep himself fit.

Goodness knows we need more consistent avenues to goal than merely Green.

Missed the first half of the year with a shoulder injury. He started off a little slowly but when he got going he was at his electrifying best taking what should be mark of the year against Port and a 5 goal haul in the last game of the year. 7\10
