The first part is about who holds the whip hand. You have every right to demand we pay up. He is contracted.

The second part is about the perceived market value of a player. We have every right to give what we believe is his market value.

Don't conflate the two.

It's amusing that you threw in former AA like it means anything.

We picked up "contracted", "former AA", Jack Macrae for pick 45 last year.

You'd say that the broad strokes of this deal have probably already been worked out between West Coast and St Kilda, as Ryan nominated over a month ago. Both clubs are probably waiting to see how other trades pan out, lest something more mutually beneficial open up. There's no reason either club needs to be shafted in this one. Hell, the trade might be done already, and the AFL is just telling the clubs to hold off to make trade week (brought to you by continental tyres) more exciting

Yeah that sounds like unders for a contracted best 22 player, but I also don't know anything about next years draft. A third rounder in last years draft might have been a decent exchange for your list demographic and a 29 year old. A third rounder could have gotten any number of Boxshall, Sam Davidson, Alex Dodson, that's a good return.

I wonder if it won't be multiple pick swaps? Eg. Future St Kilda 2nd round and 4th round pick for Ryan and West Coast 3rd round pick?

Feels like you guys decide on an ambitious recruiting strategy - cast the net wide and got a lot of interest.
Ryan is a player who is still good but in a weak team so is get table but it looks like St Kilda have bigger priorities with the resources you have
