Can I just say, that after watching several replays from '15 in a far calmer and more relaxed fashion, that he is just about the most underrated player in the AFL. Truly flies under the radar, even for myself, a massive Hawk fan, let alone for followers of other teams. Does a bulk of work, does a lot of hard stuff, that goes relatively unnoticed. SO valuable. Agreed?

Agreed. The more I watch it and pick up on more aspects and moments from the game, the more you see of Shiels. Very much a quiet achiever.

He is a huge worker at the Hawks, that period when he did his shoulder was a struggling time trying to spread around the running work he does.

Yep, I also think this year he really stepped up on his personal responsibility for the outcome of games. Some of our poorer performances this year Sheils is the one to crack in and win the hard ball, gut run to create an option. Also our best defensive mid. His body work and stoppages, tackling, smothers and desperation are all as good as anyone else in the competition.

Doesn't have a lot of tricks. Not the most skillful player (Every single goal he kicked this year was beyond arsey). Despite that, the things he does well, he can match it with anyone in the competition. Unsung hero of the team.

For every Zidane and Henry you need a Makelele.

Was always in my votes for the yabby. 17 tackles in a game? How the hell anyone can get 5 votes after that is beyond me.

Loved when he pinged shuey for holding the ball and let him know about it, that aggressive side has only come to the fore in the last 2 or so seasons. I love it

Sorry to correct you, but he's had that aggro for ever....

I'd disagree. Apart from being an average shot for goal, I think he's highly polished.

He was the #1 rated player in the league based on the AFL player rankings system across a 4 week period in the middle of the year sometime (I think it coincided with our rich vein of team form). For a full month he was having more impact than Fyfe, Dangerfield, Mitchell, Priddis, etc according to that system. And yet experts consider him a "C grader" or "just a role player".

He wins his own ball, can run all day to help link up play through the corridor and when needed can go to any of the top tier midfielders and quell their influence to "C grade" levels without taking himself out of the game when we have the ball. He's a little shaky in front of goal sometimes but he's improved dramatically in that area.

I'd be more than happy if he continued to fly a thousand miles under the radar...
Wouldn't matter if other teams (and I'm sure plenty have already) realised how important he is. If they try and tag him then it means that guys like Lewis and Mitchell aren't being tagged. And if Shiels is tagged then he can just go do a job on one of their players effectively taking 2 of their players out of the action. He's so much stronger defensively than the "best" players and still able to win his own ball that I'd back him to win most one on ones even against those best players.

I say he is on par with Fyfe and Priddis then.:D
Which says a lot about the Brownlow voting system.
