Likely line-up against Richmond

Is Schulz fit? If so, id pick him if I was Richmond to play CHB and push Polak to CHF, leaving Richo in the goal square. They would be much more direct under that regime.

still can't work out how Jackson gets in most best 22's. Will be a good VFL midfielder but not up to AFL level at this stage, others like Grigg, Anderson, Armfield etc I feel show more

Are you being serious?

Jackson has shown, particularly towards the end of last year, that he will be a good player for the Blues for a long time.

He has shown that he can play the game at the top level and compete against the best, with some particularly good showings against St Kilda where he managed to beat none other than Robert Harvey, which despite Harvey's age, is no easy thing to do.

He has a huge tank meaning he can run all day and still be running after many around him have stopped. His pace is fine, as are his skills. His defensive work is sound because he can shut down opposition players whilst still managing to find plenty of the ball himself. He is a very effective link man to have running through the middle.

Jacko will never get the plaudists that his more fancied team mated will, but that doesn't seem to phase him, and it doesn't mean that he's going to be any less effective than he is.

He is a very useful player to have, and right now, is in our best 22, if not just outside it. I have him in our team against Richmond, and a case can no doubt be made for starting him on Deledio, which i believe that he should.

Jackson is EASILY ahead of both Armfield and Anderson. Armfield is entering his first season and has shown very little thus far. Anderson seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth, and even when fit I prefer Jacko over him because Ando doesn't seem to have an offensive side to his game just yet, which Jacko does. That's not to say that Anderson won't get games, he will, but playing a different role to Jackson anyway. As for Grigg, he's not competing for a spot with Jackson. Completely different types of players

My preliminary line up and match ups.

.

About righht except I reckon Richmodn will play at least one more tall backman in either Moore, McGuane or Schulz

Raines or Edwards might also get a run

Bannister was destroyed by Brown in Round 7, 2005. I remember that day as though it was the day my soul was destroyed and Carlton were the bottom team rabble that opposition fans said we were.

And I was right.

I dont think the injury will slow Brown down enough for this matchup to be a mistake. Bannister cannot play on Brown. I think given their half forward line has all of these 6'2 guys who can take a mark, and can kick a goal, but arent key players in their own right like Brown, Morton and Pettifer, and now Deledio, Carlton will err on the side of defensive runners and include Grigg, Bower and Pfeiffer to take them.
In the light of day and after a shot of caffeine, I think Pfeiffer might play this week and match up on Kayne Pettifer because he has the leap and speed to go with him. Pfeiffer injured his anke in that Richmond intra-club practice match, so we might be taking a cautious approach with his pre-season and trying to get him fit for round one.

He would be ahead of Browne when fit.

In: Pfeiffer, Grigg(might take Morton)
Out: Browne, Russell(Houlihan to the forwardline)

Just thought : how can a team be picked without one of: either russell and bannister, for the players such as deledio, pettifer and nathan brown.. at least that way, we can release houlihan who must be kicking himself for not making the most of HFF back in 2002

Take your point, but I just couldn't find room for either of them. I can see Bannister getting a go every now and again for specialist tagging roles on elite players at top clubs (I wouldn't bother putting a hard tag on any Richmond player) especially seeing he's had a pretty good pre-season. I'd love to see Russell do well, but he really doesn't do enough for my liking - I need to see him aggressively take a game by the scruff of the neck before I reconsider him for a regular spot in the side - he's got a lot of competition in the wings now.

Letting Richmond win by anything more than 3 goals = epic failure imo.

I have no doubt they will double tag Fevola so Edwards/Betts will really have to be on the ball - there might be alot of loose ball for them to pick up. Midfield is well and truely dominated by us, backline is meh - but i think it will hold up. Brown, Deledio will have trouble kicking more than 3 each.

Betts on Bowden? Are you nuts?

Bowden is an incredibly dangerous player if we let him play the kind of game that he wants to play. He'll run out of the backline all day long and we cannot put Eddie on him. Eddie shows very little defensive pressure besides around goals and he will need to if this match up was to eventuate.

We will need to put a defensive player on Bowden. IMO, someone like Houlihan will get that role.

aha i can safely say i don't know bowden well, so i thought maybe eddie could handle him...... obviously not! who would you replace houhlihan's HF/HB posi with then? Hadley?

I don't think that Hadley has the pace to play off a half back flank.

Someone like Jackson or Pfeiffer could play there.

FF: Houlihan (stop bowden) Fevola Betts

HF: Gibbs Edwards Stevens

C : Simpson Judd (vs johnson) Jackson( he will tag foley)

HB: Scotland (pettifer) Waite(richo) *Russell (for brown)

FB: Jamison(Polak) Thornton (deledio) Bower (C.Hughes)

R: Cloke Murphy Carrazzo (newman)

Int from: *Bannister, Ackland (how bad) Grigg, Kreuzeur (if he plays) and Hadley

That is about the best team in this whole thread and the matchups do work well for you in a lot of positions But To put Thornton on Deledio is Ridiculous.
Delidio would have time to lead stop do up his shoelace have a drink from a trainer and still take the mark before Thornton gets to him
Other than that .... the team you have listed looks well thought out and would make for a great contest.
