Eh, grain of salt. Stocker being defended by the guy who moved heaven and earth to draft Stocker and talked him up as his sixth preference in that draft, and by a guy who coached Stocker at school footy and has close ties to the club that's rumoured to be into him.

They're not really offering anything we don't already know. He plays tough footy. He's had some injuries. The club know that about him and delisted him anyway. Presumably they're operating with more recent information than is available to SOS and Lloyd.

Blues supporters should take the criticism with a grain of salt.

SOS knows why Stocker is no longer at Carlton, Stocker enjoyed dinner @ SOS’ home late last week. They are quite close.

If we're able to keep our list AFL fit and with some luck relatively injury free, watch top 4 in 2023 and onwards. Go Baggers

Club needs midfield depth if it wants to get there. Even if it stays healthy you need some second tier guys to pull the weight to help keep your gun mids fresh. This is part of where we fell away due to injury this year.

This also explains why Dodo is so hot for him given how close Dodo and SOS are

Brayden Fiorini anyone?

Has one year left on his contract, but apparently gettable (as he has been for years).

Knows how to find the pill, uses it well. Clear upgrade on our existing wings...
There's reasons he's not getting a gig. He doesn't have the tank or leg speed to get a wing spot and his kicking is just decent. Not great, not elite, but generally sound, though lacks penetration. Not exactly a great mark or ground ball player, really only a receiving type player.

Further his defensive efforts leave a bit to be desired.

His strengths don't make up for his limitations. Also would say that he's not really a winger, he's more an outside mid.

Can't have it both ways, we've squandered plenty with raw talent so have to give credit where it's due when talent is converted to output. I'd argue that Motlop and Durdin are both on track as a long term forward duo and LOB Cottrell Setterfied Boyd Young have all either established themselves or turned their careers around under the new regime
Setterfield may not even be on our list next year....

Comparing a side who has 20 years of failure to Collingwoods 1 bad year. If Carlton has one good year, like 2011, does not reflect mental strength.

But the Pies have had 2 years outside the 8, that's how you judge weakness and strength isn't it?

Last year you stated * and GWS were mentally strong

At what point will you actually realise that it's about the readiness of a healthy list

The cliches are getting tiresome Michael

with the Collingwood , geelong talk , I always find we make excuses for our failures and dis credit or seem to think other teams got lucky.
Collingwood is a better run team then most in the comp and I would back them to not be on the bottom for 20 years like we have.
I was saying this to a mate that certain teams do it well and Collingwood is one of them, this was after I said I bet melb bottoms out or Carlton bottoms out before they do again.
They are more risk takers then us , example keeping curnow for gods know
What.
Their side trade treloar , trade Grundy , we would never do that

I would add to this that I also don't think we can keep playing JSOS as our second ruck. Don't see how this is helping his footy at all, I'd much prefer to see him allowed to develop his third tall role. I can't see how involvement in the argy bargy of the ruck helps this.

If we have a full complement of tall backs available I'd much prefer Young play that second ruck role.

I agree with that and that.

I don't have JSOS in best 22 anyway.

We’ve got such a great system for developing them, invite them to the club once every 4 years for a feel good photo shoot and then, on your way. Not dissimilar to our NGA program minus the photo shoot.
Does money spent on these sorts of development programs count towards the soft cap? Imagine Sydney's academy wouldnt be anywhere near as successful if it were.

So my question becomes: why don't we invest in our NGA program and try to get kids funneled in like Ugle-Hagan was?

I think it's time we try to find some gems in this draft. This is Austin's year of seeing what he can really do in regards to eyeing junior talent.

We need to watch our cap space and bringing in too many externals is a bit meh... if anything can he do a SOS and elevate some of our picks through some smart trading and manouvering? Will he be able to glean something of value for a Dow/Setterfield type? Will he even have the courage to trade a best 22 player out? Would Geelong bite really hard for a TDK? Would * sell the farm for a Harry (2 First rounders and a player or pick)... we have decent currency if we choose to use it.

Still think we should take Braden George. Think he's the perfect partner next to Harry and Charlie.

I'm happier with Austin in charge of finding players - than SOS's absolute fail with high pick mids generally - seriously biased to flaky skinny runts - which he tried to fix with Stocker and Kemp - the only wins so far are Kennedy and maybe if we ever see it a fit Cuningham.

I don't like Setterfield because he never wins the hard ball or an open field contest - Cottrell and LoB? marking time - no accident the only revealed trade target ( so far) is a flanker - Cerra and Hewett's recruitment last year pretty much told you everything you needed to know about where Dow was rated internally - couldn't get a run with all of Walsh/Kennedy and Hewett out at the same time....

SPS? no different at WC than at Carlton - man child at Schoolboy level syndrome and stopped growing or getting any faster despite FT AFL environment. Philp - I dont think so...

Fingers crossed Carroll ( who at least shows signs) and Kemp who I rate we need them coming through.

Austin needs to find some mids..

I concur with basically all of that.

That's more Agresta vs Brodie than Austin vs SOS.

Only 1 year out the 8. They beat wce in a final in Perth in 2020

I have a genuine question, interested to see peoples thoughts. It looks like Acres is the only addition to our team plus a couple of kids through the draft and who knows if they will be ready to play next season or not. But with that in mind is that a big enough improvement that will take us to the top 4 and challenging for the flag? Obviously there will be natural improvement with our players, but with all that mind is that required additions and improvements to our side that will makes that more better next season??

Think we can get a lot of improvement in performance without changing personnel much.

Improvement in the following areas should take us quite a way:
  • injury list (actually getting our best 22 or close to on the park)
  • mentality (learning to have the resolve to stand up in big moments)
  • better understanding and natural development of the Voss game plan
  • natural improvement from youth on the list

Acres fills a hole. A good contingent on draftees helps future proof the list too.

I agree. We should have beaten Collingwood two weeks ago missing two of our best midfielders and others underdone.
It’s a game of inches at the top - just need everything to gel and we can contend.

Biggest improvements should be in team synergy and growth from the 2nd to 3rd years.

We have relatively few players who would be theoretically on the decline

I would hope it was a team effort backed more than just reports from one person...V another person...hopefully that caper is no longer running.

at any rate- Getting Cerra and Hewett in as trades was fantastic - but all of SPS/DOw/Setterfield/LoB/Stocker being so so underwhelming after all these years..that's just sad and a huge miss. Can't afford to do that - sets you back and pressures the rest of the list management requirements way too much..

Acres will be a great addition and we really have a young team still compared to most.

Natural progression isn't always linear but we had the most amount of injuries this year than any club and it was Voss' first year at the helm.

New fitness standards were introduced and some of the lesser fit players didn't cope, but will be better for it.

Will we be top 4? Too many variables to say. To make top 4, 15 or 16 wins is required and a lot of luck.

I think we have the team to make it and as mentioned, next year we will be better for this year's training load.

Good luck to any team that can beat us next year if our team even improves just 5%.
