great tactical nous on show here by suggesting to trade in established gun A-grade midfielders-- often already the best player(s) on their respective teams-- for a pick in the 20's. I bet someone just watched/read moneyball! Genius!

I bet no club has thought of that before! Someone email the president.

Didn't they say two first round picks? Who has said one pick in the 20's?

Bailey Smith was traded for pick 17, fwiw.

Zac Merrett is 30 next year. Surely he's not worth more than a pick in the 20s
Poor guy
Excellent player but has wasted most of his career there

absolutely what i would be doing. going after an older mid who isnt gonna be around at their clubs next premiership window. bailey would be a fantastic get. i'd just be going to each club that is tight on cap space and saying well we'll take merrett for example and you guys pay nothing. worst they can say is no.
Wink wink nudge nudge...bont is an unrestricted free agent this year. How about a 3 year $2 million + a year deal offer to him?

Whenever Nicks has tried to correct our defence leading up this season he’s ****ed it up and we’ve gone too defensive curbing our strength, this year he’s magically found the ability to or he’s had help? What different this year with our coaching set up?

I have said a number of times, that Davis absolutely has had a lot to do with our improvement this year and deserves a lot of credit.

You’re the one saying that Nicks has nothing to do with it. That suggestion, that a head coach, does not get some of the credit, is absurd.

It is in my opinion, equally absurd, to suggest that when a team spends a significant amount of time focussing on its defence, and then becomes a very cohesive and organised defensive unit, that that time spent developing it was not a factor.

I have already agreed with you that last year Nicks got things wrong and went too slow and defensive. However, as I have pointed out, in successful rebuilds, a period of regression is pretty common, and is sometimes perhaps even necessary for a team to refine its games and be the best version of themselves.

I’m not a big pro-Nicks guy either. You can go look in the Nicks thread and see heaps of criticisms from me about him.

However, we are currently 3rd on the ladder. We have the best percentage, are the number 3 team for points for, and the number 1 team for points against. If this was all Davis’ doing and nothing to do with Nicks, would he not be marching into the next board meeting and asking for the head coach role and a massive raise?

Silvers said that Davis was brought in to support Nicks in the same way that Fagan was there to support Clarkson.

It's obviously very useful for coaches to have that - Clarkson has had 22 wins and 68 losses over the last five seasons, and Nicks is now probably favourite to win AFL Coach of the Year.

But it's a bit ridiculous to not give the AFL head coach credit for when his AFL team is being well coached. Every one successful has support, but you still deserve credit for your achievements.

yeah i mean it will obviously never happen but we should be using our situation to our advantage. a youngish list that is starting its run at a premiership and has a lot of cap space. other teams have used their situations to their advantage, i dont see why we shouldnt try ours for once.

i dont think merrett would leave essendon, but the reality of the situation is he's turning 30 and essendon are light years away from contending and he would be on a good contract. we should be looking to be in a geelong/hawthorn situation where draft picks arent worth as much to us as they are others, use that and see what you can potentially do with them.

Not according to Ronny Lerner - Ive seen some of his other takes and I hold this in the same level

Dunno if I’d say coach of the year, but for a team that was tipped by many to perhaps not win a game, to win 5, is a pretty fair effort. He’s done so too while giving plenty of responsibility and opportunities to his younger players.

A coaches job is to get the best out of the players they are given, and there’s a fair argument that no one has done that better than Yze.

Only by lazy people.

I just don't think winning 5 games - no matter the perception or where you started back from - is a coach of the year candidate

Happy for Nicks to be in that conversation but not Yze

Some of the suggestions are a little optimistic I think.
  • News is that Bont is about to re-sign with the Dogs.
  • Likely that the Demons will reluctantly have to give up Petracca, but the whole saga last year was about him moving to a bigger Melbourne club like Collingwood or Carlton for his 'brand'. Struggle to see Adelaide getting any consideration from him.
  • While Essendon are on the ropes and have been decimated by injuries, I don't think they will be looking to salary dump their captain, heart and soul of the club, and one of the top players in the comp.

Matty Lloyd on Footy Classified suggesting that Carlton should go hard for Rash. Long term contracted, Carlton would have zero they could offer us to even consider letting him go. Crazy suggestion.
Tell him he’s dreamin’

Carlton's list is pretty bad. There aren't any players I'd want for Rachele

Like it would be dumb to trade him for any of Carlton's 27+ year olds (their only good players) and we don't need either of their tall forwards

Outside of that the sum total of their decent players are Walsh (who I wouldn't trade Rachele for) and maybe Jagga Smith

of course it's optimistic and of very little chance to go through. but i hope we're at least trying and asking questions because we dont need the picks in the draft.
