Fisher was the right draft pick we just screwed him up. Best key position player in the draft loads of talent I just think something happened along the way to make him lose the passion to play which is sad now another wasted first round pick

Solid defender, should never have been a top 10 pick. We left game changers on the board.

I’m all for cutting the deadwood to take a chance on a draftee and it’s disappointing we’ve given so many multi year deals to guys who never really looked like it…but there is something to be said for bringing draftees through an SANFL team that is relatively successful and has AFL experienced players. A kid will learn develop slower if he’s in team full of teenagers and top ups getting smashed every week.

It's pretty obvious he was seen as the Daniel Talia replacement also a 1st round pick who had really started to show signs of distress and looking cooked, McAsey was certainly at least as well credentialed as Talia coming off Vic Metro's MVP and All Australian KPD at the Nationals.

I think the COVID thing and his father's well publicised life threatening heart attack obviously fed into his mental health issues.
The fact that under the Vic Government's draconian handling of the COVID pandemic at the time he couldn't even visit his father for a very very extended period.

Would there have been different outcomes if COVID and his father's health issues hadn't occurred.....that we will never know.

I’ve tended to be of the same view, but there’s a few underage watchers that reckon the key forward talent that year was very poor which overrates his year.

Big problem with this draft is it's ridiculously compromised with Northern Academies, NGA Academies and Father/Sons making up a very big percentage of the best players all likely unavailable to us unless bids aren't matched. I reckon close to 30 of those in those categories mentioned will make up a fair percentage of the 1st 2 rounds. This draft will break all records for bids on players aligned to clubs.
Then clubs surely will be open for deals for points where offloading their first for multiple picks. Regardless of the compromised nature of the draft being compromised, trade a few players for picks and try and get another 1st rounder to keep adding top end talent

The value of picks etc has been upgraded also, not quite as easy now. There will be a serious number of Academy, NGA and F/S in the 1st and 2nd rounds that unaligned clubs will not have access to.

We’ve got nothing to offer in terms of points. We’ve got our first and SFA else.

AFL needs to burn the whole thing down and start again

I hardly think doing the following amounts to the sky falling:

1) Trading Jordon Butts, who we refuse to play anyway, even when Murray is injured and Borlase is dropped. He might net a pick in the top 40. He’s a genuinely good stopper, but he’s basically only ever playing for us again if BOTH Murray and Keane are injured simultaneously. We can scour the trade market for a key defender who better suits our game plan (ie actually kicks the ball forward). The way we have cast Butts aside, I would almost guarantee he’ll be requesting a trade at season’s end, so this one might work for both parties. FWIW, I would’ve played him ahead of Borlase in the Suns game and then retained him for the Cats game (without hesitation), but in light of those things not happening, what’s even the point of us pretending he’s part of the future?

2) Trading Luke Pedlar, who we refuse to play anyway, even when Rachele is injured, Peatling is suspended AND Murphy isn’t selected, AND there’s a wet weather forecast. Again, we might get a top 40 pick here (I don’t think he’s worth that, but it’s not out of the question). I don’t rate Pedlar at all and completely agree with his ongoing non-selection, even with Rachele and Peatling out. With those guys in, he’s MILES back.

3) Trading Lachie Sholl, who has proven repeatedly that he’s not up to it against top 8-12 sides, and now looks set to spend the rest of 2025 rotting in the twos. We have Dowling, Edwards and Ryan in the twos as depth who can play a similar role to Sholl, in addition to the likes of Taylor, Cumming, Nankervis, Milera, Hinge, Curtin who could all roll up to a wing if we wanted them to. Well even still have Jones if things get super desperate because there’s no way anyone in the comp will trade for him. Would we be offered anything of note for Sholl? Probably not. So maybe he’s one we could keep instead of a lottery ticket. To say I don’t rate him would be an understatement, and if there was an opportunity to secure the infinitely superior Jeremy Sharp as a FA, this is a logical player to clear out to enable this.

4) Letting ROB walk as a FA, while securing a replacement ready to go ruck from another club who might suit our gameplan better, and also drafting a young ruck to develop. We would receive compensation for this. Happy enough for this not to happen and to just keep him, but he’s not good at football, and his “automatic” selection as our number 1 ruck is pretty uninspiring.

5) Not re-signing Hugh Bond, who continues to struggle to do anything other than stand near someone and pressure them. He’s on a 1 year deal and doesn’t look close to breaking into the senior team. His ability to actually get the ball, and his ball use / decision making is very poor and again, I don’t think he’s a player who suits our gameplan. I would absolutely keep Bond for another year if something happened to Michalanney, but he looks to be really struggling to earn another deal to me and the reality is that he’s a 50% chance at best if being retained as we sit here now. If I was betting I’d say he gets delisted and then redrafted as a Cat A rookie.

Everything I’ve said besides the above 5 things is absolutely going to happen. Murphy has reached McHenry status and is clearly gone. Burgess, Schoenberg, Gallagher, Strachan and Smith are all a 0% chance of being on our list next year. I’ve just added the additional 5 things in, with reasoning. Sky not falling at all. I just think maybe we could improve our overall list balance by dispensing with those 5 players at the end of 2025.

Having said that, like I’ve mentioned above, I’m fine with keeping ROB if he can continue playing like he did today (and bearing in mind that the ruck market has been annihilated by recent serious injuries to Draper and Bryan).

I feel like today somewhat restored what little faith I had that ROB can actually contribute something at the level in the odd game every now and then. Happy to keep him on a moderate deal if he can do that a few more times in the coming months.
I doubt that we let Rob go and get someone else in. That’s a pipe dream, we have had chance after chance to draft one.
I’d cut deep like you said and draft some talented players with flaws and hope they turn into a Cox or Stewart

Any chance we put Toby Murray on the LTI and look at the raw but extraordinary athletic GWV Rebels KPF/Chop out ruck Floyd Burmeister in the MSD with his speed, leap and X Factor. How a club didn't take a chance on him with an eye to the future in the 2024 draft I still can't work out. Unfortunately every chance he'll be gone before our pick though.

It was very important we kept Smith

Inside Trading seems to think he’s a #1 MSD chance

We have McAndrew

We won't consider him

We should be using the MSD to bring in players where possible.

Particularly if we are looking to replace other players next sesson.

Essendon need two rucks! Don't think we get a look in
