Probably the right move at the time. Pick Rachele, lock him up long term, then in a few years try to get NWM to come home.

As opposed to pick NWM, lock him up long term, then try convince Rachele to leave his home state and move to SA...that ain't happening.

Nah, always want to get your elite players and pick to your talent order. Margins are too fine to allow for being cute.

Mind you, the way Rachele is tracking, he's not far off becoming one, however it may require us to get Rankine out of the forward line for Rach to get there.

Found Rowies comments 'yeah just trade Curtin and get Wanganeen' jarring. Essentially happy to throw away a player whos ceiling could be higher than NWM for a new toy. Players like NWM are a dime a dozen imo, Curtin's aren't. I'm not in the pay anything to get NWM camp.

Think ‘dime a dozen’ is doing NWM a pretty big injustice

Very much against using Curtin to get NWM, though (don’t think it’s at all necessary)

Probably harsh from me, I think I'm more framing it around Curtin having one of the most unique skillsets I've seen at our club. I don't think NWM's are.

Seriously?

NWM is already a certified gamebreaker.

Curtin may well be in the future but he's a fair way off NWM at the same age.

And yes I get they're very different players but still your comments are way off the mark.

If this is our line of thinking why pull the trigger in offering him the three years so early? A little early in the season to be caving. I’d just be offering the two and evaluating how desperately we really need him end of the season rather than offering the three years now.

We should be getting rid of him for compo and trying to get a decent wingman. We’ve got 2 better half backs struggling a bit on the wing and a guy in the SANFL that is probably no worse. He’s the least required non-retiree on our list.

Completely differently built / types of players, not really interested in a half back flanker peaking before a 6 foot 6 player.

Let’s keep them seperate

NWM is an absolute jet

And Curtin could be an absolute Star

No need to compare

So many gamebreakers play off half back , we could do with an elite one

He’s better short-term depth than Smith or a late round draftee so I’d prefer keeping him on a modest 2-year deal. If he gets better than that elsewhere let him go. Could possibly change that tune if he finds better form throughout the year. But absolutely no reason to be offering him 3 this early into the year.

I do think it’s prob a bit closer than what afl media would tell you but NWM still for mine
I’ve watched milera a bit lately and he turns it over a fair bit

Went with Rachele instead, hindsight says NWM the better option

But then we'd be looking at a forward for Rach's quality
Supporters forget Rachele's form in the first 7 weeks in 2023 when he moved into the midfield and then tired. Why Nicks didn't continue his development there in 2024 is just Nicks but he definitely looks a lot fitter this year and started the season on fire before his injury.

If he has 20 touches there’s a lot of damage

Vic journo's have gone quiet on him re-signing, and there's lots of rumours on the crows podcasts that he's coming here.

Riley Beveridge and Cal Twomey reported yesterday on AFL.com that Draper is close to signing a four year extension with Essendon.

Hmm... what podcast was this?

He’s got licence to be as risky as he wants as he creates so many scores

He may turn it over 5x but also create 11 scores

I don’t think we’d need him to be quite as unshackled , saints seem to think he’s the only way they can move the ball

They should let him walk.

There will be much cheaper and younger ways of getting the same or better output.

Need to free up cap space somehow so can't invest too heavily in players in the 18-25 zone on your list.

Overpaying non-difference makers like Milera is what cost us Charlie Cameron and Jake Lever previously. We're managing our cap and list significantly better now (eg lengthy pre-emptive deals for Rachele, Soligo) so I hope we make a smart decision here.
These deals are fine provided they go to the right players. I'd expect they are heavily front loaded as we would have had cap space back when they were signed. That's better for the club and the player.

The risk is when the players get to the back end of the contract and are on much lower income. Good players that are not loyal will then look to switch clubs to increase their income for those last few years.

Bryce Gibbs did exactly that. Was on a front-ended contract at Carlton and was able to move to the Crows and earn several hundred thousand more in those last few years than had he stayed on his Carlton contract.

Uh, Rankine has predominantly played as a midfielder this season.

If Rachele played for Carlton or Collingwood and we'd picked NWM I guarantee the hype around both would be totally reversed. Rach is very good. No qualms about using that pick on him.
