Find it very strange we didn't prioritise getting Goad or Dodson when they were available.

Could have traded Edwards and Ryan picks to make sure we got Goad.
Why? It's not like they would be playing in our best 22 or in the best 22 at the clubs they are currently at? Ruckman take so long to develop it's probably better they are taking up a list spot at another club while they are developing and we swoop in with a 2nd rounder when they are like 4 years into the system.

Ruckman move clubs way more often than other positions.

It will probably be announced on Mad Monday.

The AFL will make sure a young indigenous player can get to his club of choice for family reasons.

It won't be a second round or something stupid like that but Port will get him for unders.

The AFL and player Managers will make sure this one is smooth.
The AFL’s only involvement will be to allow Port to trade future firsts. Not even sure they’ll do that.

Because once they're at a club there's every chance they don't want to leave. Sam Jacobs is the last ruck we traded for that worked out, and that was 14 years ago.

His best form has always been under pressure. First displacing Jacobs, then getting a long term contract, after being dropped and now as he's waiting on a deal.

There's a huge sample size, it couldn't be more obvious.
Ridiculous. This has real Facebook comment section energy. "The boys just aren't trying hard enough!"

It's absolutely ludicrous to say it's an effort issue with ROB. It's a talent issue. He's always going to have good and bad periods with his marking. His ability to get to contests and in ruck doesn't waver.

If you can't put up with his inconsistencies, then get rid of him. That's not going to change - this good period doesn't last forever, and neither does the bad.

I dont know. I agree theres not many options. If we sign him he's more than likely going to revert to coasting.

Im just astonished that someone is trying to argue that his form doesnt go hand in hand with pressure to stay in the side/get a new contract. It pretty much directly correlates to his ability to take marks around the ground.
So you think he's just a lazy campaigner who needs external motivation because he can't motivate himself? He's an exquisitely talented performer who needs outside pressure otherwise he can't be bothered?

So his talent level goes up and down? How many other players can you say that for.

McAndrew is currently a way bigger threat To ROB's continuity than Strachan has been in recent years whether you want to believe it or not.
McAndrew, who's 25 and has played 2 AFL games across his entire career, is the enormous threat who's massively impacting ROBs motivations?

Personally, I think he's good backup but I don't see how he's such an incredibly bigger threat than Strachan, who's been state league club champion three times and SANFL team of the year the last four years.

This has to be one of your poorest takes. It's obvious that ROB's motivation and effort levels can vary wildly between and within matches. You just have to watch on TV. He always has stamina and endurance as a baseline. However, his speed and effort needs to be turned on. I'm not going to speculate on the reasons why, but it has been very noticeable lately that he is trying much harder: you can see it in his speed of movement and keeness for the contest, also in his determination when kicking.

Indeed, in one match, he completely transformed at the start of the last quarter in a key match and it was quite clear from his facial expressions and speed/effort, that he was determined to win the match. It's just so obvious when he decides to do this.

The current version of ROB is definitely worth keeping, especially now that he has become a contested-marking beast. I couldn't believe his performance in the last match. Where did this clutch marking come from?

This has real 12 year old Cheerleader comment section energy “he tried really hard but his form wasn’t good for 3 years, this year he’s not trying any harder but his form is better. Being out of contract has nothing to don’t with it, leave Britney alone”

Everyone has different motivations. People definitely try harder when there's a promotion on the line. Football is no different.

Something like that. If you cant see the pattern you're not watching.

For example, after he was dropped for 2 weeks in 2022, he returned vs geelong with 28 touches, 47 hitouts, 5 marks, 7 tackles.

When does he ever get 28 touches?

He clearly plays better when there's something in it for himself.

ROB is a really nice guy

Doesn't have the white line fever to play angry and on edge all the time

Needs a needle of some sort. Getting dropped, pressure of contract, coach giving him a bake

Not unique to him. Every player has different motivation. There are some players that coaches will need to pump up their tyres, others who respond to a spray, others who can be left alone and self motivate

Why hasn't McAndrew's recent presence been factored into ROB's current form more for that express reason, surely ROB has to see the younger McAndrew as a bigger threat to his position than Strachan has been being of a similar age and height? McAndrew dominates the SANFL similar to Strachan and that extra height certainly isn't a hindrance?
I agree but I’d still want to double down and cheaply recruit another ruck to ensure ROB really feels that pressure and give us greater likelihood of having found our next ruckman.

So bigman hasn't got a clue either?

His preseason reports had McAndrew seriously putting it to ROB at training....ROB's a smart man.

I don't ever recall anyone that has watched training ever stating that Strachan had ROB's measure at training ?

LOL
Do you think McAndrew on current SANFL form won't be in the SANFL team of the year every year he's on our list if the selectors are fair dinkum?

Not too many 210cm rucks trotting around in the Snaffle.

We've gone after Jarrod Witts in the past when he was coming out of contract...no success

More recently it was reported we had a crack at Ned Moyle....no success.

It seems it's really not that easy to secure DECENT rucks....even a local boy Grundy had no interest in returning home.

Triple M footy saying before wouldn’t be totally shocked if Merrett asked for a fresh start

Don’t know where we’d sit within teams he’d consider
Imagine that.

The missing peice!

Same as what we’d do if we lost him to a hammy, next best ruckman on the list gets the job.
We've only got one other one!

If he's hurt too then... Gallucci had a huge vertical leap, but that's ancient history.

Berry is supposed to have quite a big jump on him
