Paying Draper 900k for 4 years or RoB 700k for 3 years seems like a no-brainer

Both may well coast but at least one is coasting cheaper
The only problem we have is if we wait too long on what Draper wants to do, ROB might make alternative arrangements for himself.
ROB is pretty set in Adelaide at the moment, having just bought a big boat with Ned McHenry, so you would hope his first choice is to stay here.

There is actual evidence that Draper wont be as good as the current version of ROB, and only marginal difference between regular ROB and Draper, before Draper injured himself. Plus ROB likely to have less salary. Not sure why we would be chasing Draper so hard tbh

What do you think we should do?

I'm inclined to give him 3 years and hope for the best.

The other options don't look that great.
I dont know. I agree theres not many options. If we sign him he's more than likely going to revert to coasting.

Im just astonished that someone is trying to argue that his form doesnt go hand in hand with pressure to stay in the side/get a new contract. It pretty much directly correlates to his ability to take marks around the ground.

That was pointed out and I acknowledged 20 minutes before your post.
Given the crows history over the past few years of being very tight lipped, could it be that they have lined another ruck option up via trade (maybe Henry Smith) and will get some compensation for ROB the other way. Either way it is likely to be second round picks / future picks that are traded.

Why hasn't McAndrew's recent presence been factored into ROB's current form more for that express reason, surely ROB has to see the younger McAndrew as a bigger threat to his position than Strachan has been being of a similar age and height? McAndrew dominates the SANFL similar to Strachan and that extra height certainly isn't a hindrance?
Was just about to post the same thing - I think this has been a big factor. Same principle to the 'contract year' conversation where it appear he plays to a better standard when there is an external factor in play.

I say extend with a trigger on his contract, and with a legitimate up and coming ruckman (or 2) on the list at his heels, to keep him at the level.

McAndrew is currently a way bigger threat To ROB's continuity than Strachan has been in recent years whether you want to believe it or not.

IF we don;t end up sorting a deal for NWM and he wants to go elsewhere, I have to say from the very small sample I saw on the weekend, I was impressed with Cook coming in and playing what looked to be a wing. His field kicking looked great and he offered something there imo. SO he is a guy that I had all but written off thinking his ship had sailed but what he showed in a very small sample albeit looked good. I am keen to see him again in a similar role once he is cleared to play again.
Agreed. I had written Cook off but he played with much more intensity and aggression. He was showing really good signs before he was injured.

If we replaced Rob with Draper we would be trading down. I don't get the interest in Draper. Nor did I get the interest in Petty, Luko, Phillipou.

Have you actually watched much of Henry Smith?

I don't believe he's ready to lead an AFL ruck on what I've seen thus far and why would Brisbane be chasing Draper or ROB if they thought he was given he's contracted for 2026 and McInerny with his back issues and veteran Darcy Fort age wise?

Taylor Goad won’t be playing much AFL in ruck behind 26 yr old Xerri in the next few years. He is developing nicely albeit slowly in the VFL. Probably wouldn’t cost a huge amount in draft collateral if ROB goes back to Victoria (2nd rounder plus swaps etc) to get Taylor back to the Crows.

Not happening

Huge game from Dodson in the VFL last week, albeit in a big win against the 2nd bottom team. Rest of his season has been quiet but appears to be slowly improving (which is expected for an 18yo ruck). Still surprised we didn't find a way to get a pick around 50 to get him.

It's a shame but at the same time, it's not that bad having three talented SA rucks developing at other clubs. If they're good enough, and we are too, we can go shopping in a couple of years.

We seem to have gone off the idea of drafting our own ruckman and developing them from scratch. ROB was the last one we did that with and he was a rookie.

Since then the Lowden, Hunter, Strachan, McAndrews of the world have all been mature-agers/re-treads.

Realistically hard to think of a ruckman we drafted since we drafted Meesen, Maric, Griffen (rookie draft), Sellar and Tippett all within a few years of each other.

Wild form reversal

Thanks. Didn’t recall he extended. Would we still ask the question if he doesn’t get a run in the AFL Mutineer?

Probably, on the proviso that his VFL form is good enough where we were willing to offer him a no.1 role.

Goad probably takes that deal with Xerri being as much of a roadblock as he is. That contract is just a guarantee that he'll have 3 more years to do an apprenticeship before he has to go out into the AFL world and find a job.

So according to Twomey Brisbane are seriously chasing both Sam Draper and Reilly O'Brien so it's becoming very complicated. So we won't be having both as someone on here suggested yesterday, it will be one or the other, personally I hope we keep ROB.
My Draper sources say he does not want to go to Brisbane, he will either stay at Essendon or come to Adelaide, even if Brisbane offer more money than the other two it only ever gonna be home to SA or staying

Well with Xerri out it would be wise from North to see if he can play at the level, but the club would 100% be tracking his development.

Dodson also played a ripper game in the VFL recently so we'll probably keep tabs on him too
