Did we move the ball on fast or slow? What did we do in the start of 2024? What he did then has nothing to do with where we are at now, which is what you claimed.

2023: team is average defensively
2024: team focussed more on the defensive side of the game
2025: team is great defensively

I’ve already said I thought the slow ball movement was a mistake. Hence I’m glad that’s been corrected. The ball movement was also a product of us focussing a lot more on our defence though, which is now top tier. Nicks obviously got a lot wrong in 2024 and perhaps a better coach would not have made those mistakes, but I think you can now see what he was trying to achieve with the defensive side of things.

Sometimes you have to take one step back to take two steps forward. When you watch our defence work as a unit now I can’t see how even the biggest Nicks critics (of which I have often been one) couldn’t acknowledge he’s done a good job there.

True, but Brisbane's influential coach coming to us and instantly we go from bottom 4 to maybe top 2?

Seems like a coincidence, or he's behind it.

Let's not forget Nicks was selecting Murphy recently

That's gotta be by instructions now. Didn't do it at all until midway through the year when they decided Tex wasn't gonna do any ruck work inside 50 anymore.
At the end of the day I dont mind it

IF

Tex then heads to the square to defend the ball coming out quickly

It would be mostly a coincidence. We were pretty much playing at a top 4 click in 2023, but kept shooting ourselves in the foot, so it seems more like a natural progression after a down year then anything else.

No doubt the IP has been useful, but it's Nicks vision/identity at the forefront here. The the high pressure, tough to transition against and punishing off turnover game was us in '23. The biggest improvement has been from the best 22 and that we've been willing to be more defensive with it.

We've made rapid improvement this year and the recruitment of Peatling, Cumming and Neal-Bullen is a large part of that progression. Include the natural improvement of several young guns, and no wonder we have risen quickly. Teams live and die by their bottom six and today's bottom six on games were Murray (Games 60) Keane (49), Worrell (48), Curtin (25), Pedlar (35), and Taylor (19). There are several gun players among that group. Based on ability and security of holding a place, our bottom six today was possibly, Keane, Hinge, Berry, Jones, Pedlar and Taylor. Still a strong group. In contrast the Bulldogs' bottom this week were: Poulter, Garcia, McNeil, Cleary, Davidson, O'Donnell.

Add in that our next ten out of the team are probably Rachelle, Butts, Smith, Crouch, Murphy (I know), Scholl, Nankervis, Cook, Dowling and Draper and all of a sudden we have serious depth.

He has no doubt had a big impact. But to say it’s entirely down to him and that the head coach has had no impact is silly.

My God this board is ludicrously obsessed with Murphy.

Nicks (and most teams) lean heavily into team defense and clear systems and structures. He is always going to go for a less talented player who clearly understands and can do their role.

Luckily, it seems like we need that less and less as the entire squad understands the requirements.

What we're doing now was started well before Murray Davis arrived, even if he has brought some great IP to us.

Even the things Nicks tried that didn't work (like putting bigger/slower bodies around the contest) were about getting us here.

Whenever Nicks has tried to correct our defence leading up this season he’s ****ed it up and we’ve gone too defensive curbing our strength, this year he’s magically found the ability to or he’s had help? What different this year with our coaching set up?

Nicks certainly coached rings around Hardwick on Sunday.

Interesting how much positive attention is coming to the fact that we're one of the best drilled units in the AFL - even just comparing our three tall structure to Gold Coasts, or how well our intercept defence is working.

Jack Hombsch should be up for one of the league coaching awards this year. He seems to have done an exceptional job.

Of course, none of this discussion is about our list build ...

im pretty interested what we do with our first round pick this year. presuming we finish top 4, which we really should at this point, that pick likely blows out into the 20's. wonder if we float it + next years first and try to get just another top midfielder which could really round out the list.

Definitely the type of player/position we should be targeting but 2 picks around 20 isn't going to get us an A-grade mid unfortunately, particularly given those types are very rarely traded in the first place. More likely to get a younger mid who is yet to break out and wants more opportunities, or a mid that comes with question marks through injury, attitude, etc.

Unless by some miracle NWM has played everyone and nominates us, then I would be hitting up
Brisbane - Zac Bailey
Melbourne - Petracca
Essendon - Merrett

Phillipou covers both those categories (yet to break out, question marks over durability).

absolutely what i would be doing. going after an older mid who isnt gonna be around at their clubs next premiership window. bailey would be a fantastic get. i'd just be going to each club that is tight on cap space and saying well we'll take merrett for example and you guys pay nothing. worst they can say is no.

Bit negative about the in form coach in the comp

great tactical nous on show here by suggesting to trade in established gun A-grade midfielders-- often already the best player(s) on their respective teams-- for a pick in the 20's. I bet someone just watched/read moneyball! Genius!

I bet no club has thought of that before! Someone email the president.

If I had to rank our list needs by both importance and how much we should give up to address them…

1. Gun midfielder
2. Gun half-back flanker
DAYLIGHT
3. Tex replacement
4. Seventh-fiddle forward
5. Depth

Of course, recruiting a gun is always easier said than done, but we can hopefully still address our other areas of need. Sounds like we are doing our diligence for a Tex replacement (I hope we consider the cheaper Fritsch over Draper). You’d hope we can target a couple handy depth pieces (ie Rosas for small forward depth, Ramsden/Heath for ruck depth). Zac Bailey would be interesting as a seventh fiddle forward though you’d hope he can make a midfield impact with the amount he’d cost. If we could somehow trade up for Sam Cumming I think he’d slot into that seventh forward role perfectly.

I think Bailey is a FA next year?

Surely you'd be throwing a carrot out

Would be stupid not to

His other half is from Adelaide, not sure if they have kids if so there is a huge drawcard

And his mum sadly just had a stroke so the lure of family could be enough
