I look at it the other way, they are headed for a salary cap squeeze big time in coming years and being mostly home grown talent we have the opportunity to raid them like all AFL clubs because unlike previous times these players have no Victorian go home factor making Adelaide a viable option. A fit Charlie Ballard anyone?
But a bit like our home grown stars, do their home grown players all take a bit less to stay there than what it would cost to pry them out? You could well be right, but its starting to look ominous as they keep having academy kids well inside the top 10 every year now

We should be giving Crouch the Jarryd Lyons take it or leave it contract. One year on not a lot.

I feel he gets two though

Look, I know this will be howled down, but Darcy Parish is supposedly pretty gettable.

Possibly?
The Draper development and planning probably drops him further down the ladder but Sid is not a like for like.

Depth is critical for successful teams. Especially experienced depth. The Rach injury has exposed this as we've tried Murphy and Pedlar so far and they've fallen well short of covering what Rach brings each week.

I think that in his role, Crouch will bring performance that will be okay. Any cost of having him available when needed will be just another cost of doing business. Like insurance, you get the reassurance you pay for.
Yes, but we also need to be aware of our impending salary-cap tightness in coming years. We have several young players entering star status that will be pursued by other clubs. Every little difference counts - we need to distinguish required depth from luxury depth and Crouch on a multi-year deal is a great example of this. Is the difference between Draper’s next two years and Crouch’s enough to justify Crouch’s salary?

See, the issue we have is that if we DON'T happen to jag NWM, we are falling behind as GC get Patterson and the other top rated academy kid they have to add to their previous seasons hauls of top end academy kids. If we don't happen to be successful in turning NWM's head our way, what do we do to improve our list again? our drat pick will be a back end of 1st this year in a weak draft???
We could always try playing our recent high draft picks...

It really shouldn't come into it what the players draft pick was, it should come down to whether they're ready for sustained AFL game time or not. Nothing worse IMO than having draftees yo-yoing in and out of the AFL team.

Jake Soligo was ready and played a lot of AFL, Zac Taylor from the same draft wasn't ready.

Agreed but I still think we've been conservative with some of our selections, favouring experience over potential/upside, eg. Jones/Murphy/Smith over Edwards/Draper/Ryan, etc. Can't argue too much given we keep winning, but getting games into them is the most likely way to improve the list if we are unable to snag NWM (which is what the poster was asking).

I sure lots of young players watch Carlton faithful jeer and abuse and spit on their beloved team on multiple occasions over the last few years and go - I would love to play there!!
Sure Rach barracked for them as a kid - as an adult I am sure he pities the players and thinks a good chunk of the supporter base are a disgrace
Wouldnt even consider trading rachele to them unless it was for this year and next year's first rounder.

Carlton's first pick in the draft this year is 35 and their second 43

Only Collingwood have a worse draft hand this year

Lloydy probably didn't spend too much time thinking about that

Cal saying we have now offered ROB 3 years.
Thought I had heard this.
Fingers crossed we can still get him over the line and haven't pissed him off too much, have always preferred him to draper

They don't even have this years first, though I guess they could cough up Jagga Smith and next years first. I wouldn't be keen to do it but it's at least a nice offer.

Ew, was assuming they had pick 7 (currently), and probably something similar next year

Honestly, we could keep both Rob and Draper as they would be playing different roles, Draper would replace Tex in our three headed monster

Sent it to Hawthorn last year trading up to get Jagga Smith

Anyone on their list you fancy?
Not really apart from Jagga Smith as mentioned by spenze
