Why do you think he's on that much money?

He was on less than $550k previously (as he never turned up in the published salary lists, though other Crows players did), and it's pretty reasonable to assume he got a pay cut, after a season where he was dropped.

How much do you think ROB is on?

You reckon he got a pay cut from $550k to a lower figure?

There are approximately 11 players on more than $600k on each AFL list, with a further 9 on $400k-600k. Essentially, the top 20 players are on good money.

He finished 10th in our 2025 B&F, the season where he signed his latest contract, and he's our 7th most experienced player. It's pretty likely he'd fall into that orange bracket of 600-800k based on that.

That’s true, but like Rob, Scully and or Boyd would be the backup ruck playing in the SANFL. Salary cap wise, Rob is getting $$$$$ where as Scully or Boyd would only be on $$.

Replacing Rob would be a good financial gain to the salary cap.

Dodson should be on our wish list regardless of Rob staying or going.
I don't hate the idea of jettisoning ROB for a cheaper version if we need the cap room and he's on a fair sum.

I guess we're guessing what he's on and we'll learn more when the club actually has to act

Maybe, and I know it's always safest around here to lean into a doomer perspective - but if he was on $550k coming off a B+F season, then I'm reasonably hopeful that he didn't get a pay rise in his next contract, when he was coming off back to back years of being dropped.

I assumed his delay in signing came from not seeing the kind of offer he hoped for. Eventually he realised there wasn't a market and he signed.

But I guess we can't know for sure

Doomer perspective or reality? You’re just too sensitive to accept anything negative about the club, that’s why you have a history of changing your opinion to match the clubs

I would think $500k. I reckon we offered him exactly what he was already on and he ummed and ahhed for a while then accepted it.

He wasn't worth more and one else was offering more - but we rarely do paycuts.

His last deal was a 4 year deal signed as a 25 year old as the current best and fairest. It was signed in 2021.

Last year's extension was a 3 year deal as a 30 year old who had been dropped multiple times. We know negotiations dragged on. I can see where you're coming from.

Leaning towards 600-800k given there's probably 20 players on the list on over 400k and his seniority.

That $550k you're quoting from his 2021 deal, could that have been impacted by Covid reductions? (There definitely was soft cap reductions) Could be misleading to where he really stood at that time.

True, I'm just guessing. The Herald Sun salary list always started at $500k-$550k, and he never appeared. Is that accurate? Maybe, maybe not.

If we had 10 players at the club who we knew last year needed to be paid $600k+, would we have thought ROB was one of them? Hopefully not.

I think salary cap and list management has been one of our more competent areas, so I'm optimistic about this.

RoB wanted an extra year, hope we low ball him for that extra year so instead of $600K at 2 years we offered him $450K at 3 years.

This was my rough guess,

$1,000,001+: AFL average is 3.22 players

Dawson
Rankine

$800,001-$1,000,000: AFL average is 3 players

Thilthorpe
Cumming
Fogarty
Ah Chee

$600,001-$800,000: AFL average is 5.22 players

Walker
Rachele
Neal-Bullen
Keane
Laird
O’Brien

Good recognition for James - he has proved many wrong.

Down back, however, is perhaps where Adelaide’s greatest unsung hero lies: James Borlase.

Called up alongside exiled ruck O’Brien against the Dockers, the 23-year-old key defender has, time and again this season, played on the league’s best tall forwards.

Such is his rising value in Nicks’ side that the coach praised him unprompted after another stellar performance last Thursday.

“I thought Borlase was unbelievable tonight behind the ball. I thought our whole back six or seven that went through there played some really solid footy, they were really hard to play against,” Nicks said.

“Borlase is a guy who’s done a hell of a lot of work, and been challenged in and out of the side in the last three or four years.
“He’s found his way in, and now he’s beginning to get to that level where he’s consistently performing, and he was so important for us tonight.”

At the conclusion of Round 14, the Sturt product ranks third in the league for average spoils per game (9.8), and has a contested one-on-one loss rate of just 10.5% — despite averaging more one-on-ones than any player in the competition each match.

Look, fair enough.

I'm just thinking of a mature body who can just be backup in multiple positions on a one year deal. He's probably gone though.
He's not a backup in any position because he's not good in any position.

He's a waste of a list spot and a net negative to any AFL selected 23 side.

Yep

If spots open up you want them going to Draper or Edwards or whoever is on their way up as a player.

Shouldn't waste those opportunities

RE-SIGN - Cook, Taylor, Borlase, Hall-Kahan, Cotton, Walker, Hinge, Edwards, Jones

LOSE TO FA - Butts

TRADE - ROB, Pedlar

DELIST - Dowling, Ryan, Sholl, Maley, Welsh.

Trade for a younger backup ruck, add Bailey.

I'd rather keep Maley then Jones, but if you're cutting eight players off our list, I really couldn't care less if he gets the delisted then rookie kind of treatment. At that point, someone questionable is getting kept.

Mind you, I highly doubt any team would care to trade for Pedlar. Even SSP off delisting seems rather questionable at this point seeing how no-mans-land he is 6 years into his career.

Pedlar is probably a one year deal scenario.

If someone wants to poach him then let them.

Imagine trading Tex, laird and rob in for a 1.8-2mill player ❤️

If Cumming is on that money - and he may well be - we should try to trade him for a second rounder and half his pay. He’s pretty much depth.
