I hate Hewitt. I reakon he's one of the most overrated tennis players of all time. He's a ball boy to me and that's pretty much it. Returns the ball and waits for the unforced error.
Gold mate. So he's the youngest #1 of all time, yet overrated? 10th all time prize money winner, yet overrated? 8th all time for most weeks spent at #1 (80), yet overrated? 2 time Grand Slam winner, yet overrated?

You're obviously not a fan, don't understand why but that's your opinion, but to say he's "one of the most overrated tennis players of all time" is just a ridiculous comment purely made out of hatred.

One game off, Baghdatis was spent after the Safin match as well by the time 3am came along. Was a great fight but Hewitt had the upper hand. Hewitt could take the same excuse tonight but he was bundled in straight sets. Take it sonny. :)

Essendon for 16th. :)

That guy actually goes for Carlton.

I didn't watched the 5 set Federer match. I heard it wasn't that epic and that Federer let his guard down.

This match was amazing... the quality of tennis was astounding at times. Best match of the tournament so far... the Hewitt vs Baghdatis match went for a long time but the quality of tennis was actually quite poor.

Fatigue got him from Sunday morning. Disappointing for Rocky. Just was a little tired and sluggish. Happy with his last 16 effort. Am expecting him to be last 16 in all majors in 07 at worst. A final and perhaps a win at the US would also not surprise.
Great that we have 4 champs in Federer, Nadal, Hewitt and Djoko all gunning at the same time. Can only be good for tennis!

Sorry, can't accept that. Rasheed went on and on last night saying Hewitt had no lasting effects from the previous match. Plus Hewitt said the same thing. Can't use fatigue as an excuse. It is convenient though.

Rasheed wouldnt know how hewitt was feeling and Lleyton couldnt use fatigue as an excuse as it would have been seen as whinging so for once the brat held his nerve when questioned about it.At least he got the court surface he wanted which probably helped him last a little longer in the tournement

He's officialy a has been.

I should say a 4th round effort overall was a good effort and he got a lot further than most people expected. If a 4th round loss if a poor effort go helpthe rest of the Australians or 95 % of Pros on tour.

Difference between them and Hewitt is that they're still in the tournament. ;)

Ah figures, 'tis a tad embarrassing when someone puts unlisted, let alone another team! :D

Please, a 4.5 hour marathon that goes to 10-8 in the 5th with some of the best shot making you are likely to see isn't epic?
If that's not an epic I don't know what is.

State first off that I always hope Hewitt wins, but that doesn't mean I'm blind and think he's always a chance to win whenever he plays. I said in another thread that Djokovic would win easily, and he did.

Hewitt has now played the Oz Open 12 times and reached the quarters or better just once. That is very very poor. He's on his way out. Last year I tipped that he'd be lucky to make 2 more quarters in any Slam before he retires, and I give him almost no chance to ever make a semi.

I don't think there is much doubt that his best is past him. A good lesson to young tennis players to take your chances when you have them as he done. I always rememer Phillipousis in an interview after a pathetic performance at Wimbledon saying that he wasn't too concerned with losing as he would have other chances to win it. He never made an impact at Wimbledon again.

He might not have another Grand Slam semi in him mainly due to the quality of other players but I think he still has some good wins in him.

So I am assuming you are meaning juniors as well.

He only turned pro at 17, which is 10 years ago in 1998.....

Won over 17 million in prize money. I am sure he dont give a fig what people think about him. He has the determination to have made it this far at his age, good on him.

This tournament the administrators did the wrong thing by him and Bagdadtis.

That would be a bit selfish of him ;). Geez, I would certainly take a good look at myself if a large percentage of people in my own country disliked me :p

So, you are saying a large percentage of people in his own country dislike Leyton Hewitt. Big call that one.

But then again he is in good company with the Australian Cricket team.

me thinks some people on here should go out an play some sport, then they might realise what it takes to make it to the top, and appreciate the hard work these guys do.

Amazing sometimes the Australian Tall Poppy Syndrome

You disagree with me on that call? You don't have to be Einstein to realise Hewitt isn't high up the "Most Popular Australian Sportsperson" tree. Rafter (yes, retired but when playing) and Hewitt are like chalk and cheese when it comes to this matter.

But then again he is in good company with the Australian Cricket team.

Yep, both have been called arrogant.

How is this relevant? There are loads of top sports people out there who have a much better attitude than Hewitt.

Hewitt is admirable, his only weapon is tenacity and he can still make it 4th round against the big boys.

I think he still has some tournament wins left in him.

I'll say this slowly. Hewitt played the Oz in 1997, and has played each year since. That's 12 years. His results, as you linked, are:

1st (3): 1997, 1998, 2002
2nd (2): 1999, 2006
3rd (2): 2001, 2007
4th (4): 2000, 2003, 2004, 2008
========================
F (1): 2005

Passed the 4th round just once.

turned pro in 1998. from the above australian open website.
is that clear enough.

Dude, he played the Open (seniors) in 1997: Bruguera d. (q) Hewitt, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3; and in 1998: Vacek d. (wc) Hewitt, 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 2-6 6-3 6-1

Whether he was a junior, pro, qualifier, wildcard, whatever is irrelevant, my point, again, is that in 12 attempts, he's passed the 4th round just once, and as Australia's best player since Pat Cash, that is disappointing.

Junior is not the same as senior matches,

For goodness sakes, one of my kids played junior competitive tennis. Would that mean his junior aus open things are counted once and if they make the senior grade?
