I know that the season is only 5 weeks in, but I've noticed a trend that the captain has been setting. And this is the contest he makes when the ball is presented in the forward. Is it me, or does Lloyd just sitting in front of the ball either watching it go past, watching his player, trying to play behind, or goin for the lloyd special free kick? I know it is sacreligious to rag on the captain :( , but he doesn't seem to present forward in terms of leads and even a real strong marking contest like he has in the past. Three gimmes against C'wood, didnt get to chance to see properly against St.Kilda, but its been a common occurrence in his game this season. Is he still underdone with hammy? Also he seems to have developed abit of a mouth, too much for my liking. Your thoughts?

P.S. Really wanna see more of Johnsy, he's beginning to look like captain used to...

Yeah, I don't think he's leading as strongly as he used to, but it doesn't always help when our kicking goes over his head and he has no choice but to double back so he has to keep his opponent close before turning back, nuff nuff supporters think he's playing for free kicks all the time.

I get the feeling he is trying to be the stay in the goalsquare strong man fullforward at times..No doubt he has sacrificed his natural game for the team..CJ is our best leading forward..He has great dukes..Scotty is best marking..

Apart from ANZAC day when he was carrying an injury i have been very pleased with lloydy this year. In years gone by if he wasnt in our 50 he wasn't worth a pinch of shit. This year however he has been getting up the ground tackling and using his size to help our midfield plus unselfishly making room for Scotty in the 50. Even in the Collingwood game in the last half he had a brilliant piece of play where he got up in the centre square layed a big hip and shoulder ran hard forward and recieved a shit kick from Dyson but still picked it up and slotted it through on the run from 35-40 metres.

Well, he hasnt exactly set the world on fire, yet he's still managed to be in the top 5 goalkickers, so thats not bad for someone who's not as devastating as he has been in the past.

Same. He doesn't seem to be able to put any distance between himself and the FB on the lead. Maybe that's why he's not leading as much. I'm hoping it's because of the rumoured niggle he's got and it'll be fine next Saturday.

Teams have been playing quicker blokes on him. Has lined up on O'hailpin , Clement and Gram/Fisher who are all more mobile than the traditional full backs.

The delivery to him hasn't been great over the past few seasons as we've been pretty ordinary.
If he averages 3 goals a game, leads up the field to present and taken a decent backman away from someone else, hes done a pretty good job I reckon.

He's still kicking goals, 'soft' or not, last time I checked they're still worth 6 points. I don't think his speed is an issue. He's one of the best tacklers we have at the moment.

There is a vast difference between Lloyd now and Lloyd of 00/01. He still reads the play as good as ever. But his body shape has changed dramatically. He is much much bigger than he used to be. It would be all muscle, but he is much heavier and bulkier than he used to be. I think that it's robbed him of the athleticism and pace off the mark he used to have.
Back in the day, he would still have burnt off Clement, Gram etc. that Ant mentioned easily.
I don't think it's too much time in the gym or anything, simply that when he was at his best he was 22/23, and now he is 30. Age I think may have taken away that explosiveness.
As I said, he still reads the play better than anyone, and can still be more than valuable, like he has been this year.

Been a preaty good start to the year. Kicked his 17 so far and his partnership with Lucas has been the key to our good start to the year.

I have noticed this year that he looks very slow off the mark. Clement who I dont belive is overlly quick was on his tail the whole day. His injury may have something to do with it.

Lloyd is not taking contested marks anymore. Not as many anyway. He s certainly not taking as many on the lead. Compare that to Fev who leads hard and then the marks stick.

Lloyd is playing "okay" but there is something not quite right with him at the moment. I agree with the opening post - Johns is looking a bit like Lloyd used to.

Too slow now and cant create space between himself and the full back. Seems to want to run under the ball and try and turn his opponent around. Works every now and again but maybe LLoyd needs to go back and have a look at the video of the way he was playing in 1999-2001.

Also he could take a look at the way Johnathan Brown played tonight against Carlton. He only kicked the 3 goals but he was brilliant and hes a far bigger bloke than Lloyd seemed to be able to put plenty of space between himself and O'hailpin. Seriously is Lloyd now that slow??

Must admit though his work off the ball has improved dramatically.

Pull your heads in. He has kicked 17 goals in 5 games 2 of them losing games when we have had a forward kick more. A fair average by my calculations. Take into account that he was on the verge of not playing on Wednesday and still kicked 3.

Since 2000 he has probably put on 6 to 8 kgs of muscle which would slow anyone down a little but may also be the reason he is hitting players hard and tackling hard, and perhaps the reason that Goodwin went off after a Llolyd hit.

Lastly I remember Bewick once said that after a serious injury it takes 9 games to be able to get back to something similar to how you were before. FFS the guy ripped a muscle from the bone had a year off and is playing very well and leading the side very well.

No one said he is playing badly, just that he doesn't look as quick. I agree with you and Bewick (although he did kick 9 in his first game back) that it is too early to judge, pace wise.

No one has questioned his leadership, I think he's been great this year.

Well, it's not his size that's slowed him down. He's definitely not big enough for that to happen. There's a reason that the worlds best sprinters are big and muscley. Did you know that Courtney Johns is one of the fastest in the club off the mark??

However ripping the hamstring off the bone - even after recovering, I doubt he'd be explosive as he was prior to a horrific injury like that.

His role has changed this year with the inclusion of Johns, I have noticed that he is making more contested situations and working harder at keeping the ball in our F50.

He is running in the packs and trying to open space up for Johns, Davey etc to run into when we have the ball.

He is being extremely unselfish but wait for him to come good soon and when he does Lucas and Johns will be both running the half forward line kicking to him one out when he will kick his 10.

He along with others has realised that the team is bigger than the individual.

He needs to keep his feet more often than not because he is a good contested ball winner.

Bingo. You hit the nail right on the head. He doesn't keep his feet any more. When on a lead he just falls over. I love Lloyd and know how much of champion he is but this falling over crap has got to stop. He has such a massive frame that it's tough for any defender to spoil a mark, but he makes it so much harder on himself by falling over. He doesn't need to fall over.

In all essence, he is sacrificing much of his game for the benefit of the side. Leads further up the ground, takes larger backmen away from the goal mouth and gives our team with the 'still' suspect delivery a large target to aim for closer to the middle than in previous years. His game in recent rounds has been more selfless than in years gone by.

serioiusly everyone FFS leave him alon, his game plan has altered yes but for the benefit of the team, just watch when he goes under the radar one match and pops up with 8
