Saw this on the main board. Thought about it for a while.

It works well in soccer. Could it work in AFL?

For example. Rather than have Mason Cox or Jarrod Witts playing VFL every week. They could be getting AFL experience for a team struggling with ruck stocks. Helps Collingwood because its developing the player, also helps the other club by having a ruckman they want for a year.

If it were in AFL who would you loan our or in for a year?

I dont think it could work here. In soccer there are many more teams and comps that allow big clubs to loan out players to increase their development. The AFL is just too small.

I'm thinking along the same lines. Would like to see it, but year comp isn't big enough. Could be a case for it, mid year or something.
Teams smashed by injuries for example, needing a CHF or something and Gault sitting in VFL. Would be perfect.

A mid-year draft could be a good idea.

What should be done is a mid year draft for teams with players out long term with injuries. Loaning players could end up messy.

The AFL competition is just to small.
What you are really advocating is loaning players to Carlton as realistically our bottom half players can substitute any of their cattle.
Do you think our members would allow this?
In the EPL for example, it's extremely rare for Liverpool to deal with Man Utd because of the rivalry. I'd expect the same in AFL.

Nothing more needs to be added to these thoughts.
Spot on

I don't think its harsh. I see it as development. From this years draft, I cant see Rupert Wills getting a go, so if a team who was going to use him, i'd loan him out for the year.
Can't see anyone wanting to play someone we won't play for another year or so

I actually said this on essendon board we could of lianed them mason cox they need a ruckman he gets 1 year experience....good for everyone

Any idea that makes us more like Soccer I say....no-thanks to. If you want your players "sharing their loyalties" all round the AFL...it's magnanimous but nah. Let's just develop our players ourselves and let the other clubs wonder how we do it.

Funny I made this exact thread 6 months ago and use all jumped Down my throat it's always nice to have double standards though hey

I don't like the idea, one of the biggest challenges is building a list, why give other teams a chop out by loaning players whether they are in the best 22 or not.

Without being a huge soccer fan and grasping the whole loan concept, I don't think it'll work in AFL. Every club has their own rookies they're already trying to develop. The way list management is currently means that clubs have stocks in all departments anyway, and if a club has a positional need, I'd prefer a mid season draft to solve that problem.

Not really. Pretty much everyone who has responded has said they're against it. I'm absolutely against the idea. Mid-year draft, different idea totally and one that probably makes sense.

I didn't realise having little to no equality constituted something working well. We should stay as far away from anything the EPL does to further broaden the gap between the clubs as possible....

I think he means the 'loan Jessie White out for good comment'.

It doesn't work for so many reasons that have already been done to death on this topic

An actual interesting idea would be to have a mid-season draft where every team has the chance to pick up 1 state league player
