What are some things that annoy you about local footy? I will give you some of my local footy pet hates.


1 This goes for both local and AFL football. When a side decides to relax, and let the opposition win the last quarter. Lets say that Coburg led by 80 points at 3 quarter time. It really would bug me if they then allowed their opposition to kick 6-7 goals in the last quarter and win the quarter. When that happens, I leave the ground at the end of the game feeling pretty annoyed.


2 When a side wears the same jumpers of those in the AFL. Surely clubs are smart enough to come up with their own designs, rather than copying the designs of the AFL jumpers.


3 Umpires. I have seen junior games where the umpire is the father of a player involved. Umpires should not be allowed to umpire games if members of their family are involved in these matches.


4 Again in junior matches, I have seen games where sides have had to give the opposition some of their players. A few times, Newlands Coburg had to give some of their players to the opposition. If the opposition cannot field a full side, they should not expect Newlands Coburg to give them some players. I hope I am making sense about this point. If not, let me know, and I will try and explain it better.

definitely annoying, especially when they CHANGE from an individual guernsey to an AFL one. Still, its apparently a cost-saver. I also hate how many teams are doing the 'Western', 'Northern' thing ... at local level, are you going to attract more support? NO.

 sometimes this is the only way to keep a club going. sometimes its warding off the inevitable fold/merger, other times the club gets back on its own feet later.

My main problem with this is this. Lets pretend that I play for the Coburg Cougars. The opposition is Lalor. If I was told to play for Lalor for this game, and I got a free kick in the goal square, and the siren went with scores level, would I kick a score to win, or deliberately kick the ball out of bounds on the full? If I kicked it out on the full, my real side would get 2 points. If I kick a score, the side that I normally play for get no points. And the fact is that you will score from the goal square. It is almost impossible to not score from the goal square. So, if you don't score, it looks deliberate. This is the main reason for my hating this.

Interesting to bring up the loyalty aspect.

I would, to my own chagrin, try to kick the goal. I agreed to play for the opposition, and I would have to honour that.

Avoca U16s turned up at a match undermanned once, against Illabarook.

Illabarook gave Avoca a couple of players, and Avoca went on to win the match! They are both called the Bulldogs, too, which is beside the point, but fun to add!

Someone mentioned recently that Landsborough turned up at a match recently with only 14 senior players. The opposition lent some reserve players (of course there hadn't been a reserve match). During the game, a Landsborough player left the ground injured, so one of the two umpires donned a Burras guernsey. No fuss this time, they still got pumped.

It depends on how much good spirit can still be drummed up in a sport that is now so maligned by the competitive factor. Its great to want to beat the other team, and even to hate them. But when help is required, the bloke who sqaps guernseys is a bit of a top bloke, in my book.

At Cowwarr, a team figurehead died during the week, and the team decided not to play the next match, thus forfeiting. Their opposition, hearing of the reason, refused to accept the four points!

IF THAT DOESN'T BRING A FLAMING TEAR TO YOUR EYE!

Anyone not seeing the spirit in that decision should be refused entry to any level of football match until they can prove to a court of law that they have gained understanding of what this is all about!

Some very very good points here.

Another thing that I hate is when players who don't bother comming to training, then expect to get a game in the seniors. I know of someone who didn't come to training for a week because it was too cold. It is that sort of attitude that I hate. Too cold for training, but when it comes to playing senior footy, it being cold doesn't matter. This guy was dissapointed that he was dropped to the reserves. Not a great attitude in my books.

I did that.

Went to barrack for Woody West v Glenelg at Glenelg, wearing Roys gear. Then went to Footy park to see us get pumped.

Another year, went to barrack for Woody West v someone at Woodym wearing Roys gear. Then went to Footy park to see us get pumped.

I tell you what! You see a LOT more people in crows gear at SANFL matches than you see Port Magpies fans in Power gear.

I wear my Power hat...only because i havent got a magpies hat yet...i still wear my magpies scarf, shirt, lace up guernsey and boxers tho.

There are plenty more Crows fans that where Crows gear to SANFL matches than Port fans thats for sure!

Hehehe... there is a considerable amount of Crows gear at SANFL games.

I actually originally made the post about Effendon, to get a reaction from Anne about *C*, but she's obviously sleeping :P

I also hate it when my least favourite VFL umpire, does Coburg games like he did against the Murray Kangaroos the other day. I thought he was a discrace to the most pathetic umpires, even though Coburg won by 93 points. His name is Geoff Twitt. His second name says it all.

Abso-bloody-lutely. Especially Port Magpies supporters. Remember...it is the Magpies playing, not the Power. I don't see the Maggies playing with Teal on their jumpers.

How pathetic!

As ive said before...i see PLENTY more people at SANFL games with crows crap on, than Port supporters with Power gear on.
 
I don't have anything against Port Adelaide, except that they should be wearing the proper colours to the game, not the colours of the other half of the club.

I only wear Crows colours to Crows games, never to Bulldogs games.

People who followed a SANFL club for years but now (because of AFL) run down the SANFL and have no interest in their existing SANFL club.....I hate that

Good call!!!!

If people would get off their arses and go along to a few games they'd realise that SANFL is better value per dollar than the AFL. At least it hasn't been sanitised down to a non contact sport.

I went to the Sturt v Norwood game at Norwood Oval this year and there were 14000 people there. The game was a high standard one and on the way out I heard a few people comment that it was as good as many AFL games.

If more people turned up the atmosphere would be fantastic instead of just 'good'. A season pass costs bugger all and is great value.

Going to a SANFL game every week is the ONLY thing I miss about Adelaide.

The Cheer squads is the only thing I can think of.

They are mostly feral foul mouthed idiots who belong in prison.

That's for all teams, although some teams squads are not feral as such they are just a few beers short of a six pack.

Lcoal footy is great. Lie on the grassy hill in the sunshine with a beer and a pie and yell at the Umpires and players who can hear you. GOLD.

Couldn't agree more Nod.

Going to Footy Park when the Crows are playing is a pet hate.
Without stereo-typing everyone , Power supporters are much more knowledgeable than their cross town counterparts, as much as it kills me to say it.
And before anyone jumps down my throat and says don't go to crows games,,,, I don't.
 
We pay da muney we watch da game, Port Adelaide supporters like to support their SANFL club the Port Magpies, we dont care if we wear Port Adelaide gear or Port Magpies gear...we are one and the same to our clubs...

That explains the enormous crowd at the Magpies match on the weekend, hmm?

Which brings me to my pet peeve: Bandwagon supporters.

Those arseholes whose interest in SANFL extends as far as reading the scores in the paper during the home and away season, but they never get to a match and support the club.

Then, come finals time when their AFL team has died, they swap colours and bound wholeheartedly onto their local team's bandwagon.

The idea of supporting a club is, to me at least, the act of getting behind a team from the first bounce of the season, riding the highs - and when necessary, riding the lows. Standing on the hill through sunshine, wind, rain, hail and cheering your team on - whether they be 10 goals up or 10 goals down. Anybody who hasn't done this all year has no right (in my book) to turn up on Grand Final day. Begone, poseurs - you denigrate the sport.
