Well after tonight, does he come back into the side, or do we say bye bye?

I think it's about time the club said.. "Yep, you nearly lost your life playing for us, but we think it's time to go"

I'm not sure if he is out of contract or not, but surely it's time for others to come up.....

No way should he be delisted, absurd comment. I, however, believe we look better with scarlo at fullback and wojack and Taylor Hunt running .

And what if we got done by the doggies tonight? Barry Hall rips us to shreds, Lake comes up forward and dominates...

Would you have started a thread saying, "Gee, we really missed Lonergan tonight!"

How convenient to kick a man when he's down.

The only reason I felt he may not play next week is because of Carlton's understanding of using smaller players to beat us.

Big premature to start calling for Lonergan to be delisted.

Sure he may not be the most gifted player in our backline, but he plays an important role. He can play on tall forwards which in turn frees up players like Enright, Milburn, and Mackie to attack and rebound out of the defensive 50.

I have to admit, I really like Taylor Hunt wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a regular replacement for players like Wojo, and Milburn.

Im sad to say that I think we are better off without Tom! Particularly against a forward line with small quick players.

I find it hard to believe those who cannot see that Tom isnt up to it. He is fine when there is no pressure but when there is pressure he just looks like he is going to butcher it. Some good judges far more qualified than I have said the exact same thing in the media after the pies loss.

You have to get past the emotion and feel good story of his comeback from the brink. I would love it if he could cut the mustard after what happened to him but you have to leave the emotion out of it. He is a weak link and for mine its far better to give guys like Menzel, Laidler and Taylor Hunt a crack. All 3 looked good tonight. However I understand that most guys look good in 100 point wins though!

Having said all that Id love it if Tom proved me wrong. I really would but I dont think so.

Fact of the matter is Laidler linked up better tonight than Lonegran does in my opinion, and its only his second game.

We're going to have to accommodate Drum, Laidler and Gillies in the next couple of years and I'd prefer get games into them.

Can't see Lonegran getting better and even in his good one-on-one games he seems to be a liability in terms of link ups out of defensive 50

Can see both sides of this debate.

However if Taylor comes back I'm not so sure we have to have Tom in the side. Perhaps for a specific match up against a specific team but Geelong does not do that.

No emotion involved I say - keep him on the list as he is developing better than I thought and who knows - at 6' 7" he could still develop and be handy player for us down the track. And he deserves another contract on his performances this year - which has got us position 2 on the ladder come finals time. Has made his contribution to the team IMO.

However, for me, still the weakest link in the backline - though some Mackie disgruntlers may argue otherwise.

However Mackie and Lonergan I do not think are fighting for the same position down back - so this for me makes Tom most vulnerable.

Just not quite there for me yet.

Definitely shouldn't be delisted. That's a tad harsh. However, I do think that tonight we looked better with Scarlett sticking at FB on Hall and Taylor to replace Laidler. Lonergan has had a good season, but his decision making is poor at times and I think we are better off with Scarlett where he belongs and the extra run of Wojak and T. Hunt.

And that of course is the other thing to consider - we may keep another runner that brings more pressure on the opposition ball carrier and breaks the lines. We look even better when we have a little extra speed.

Everything is relative and interconnected - you gain and you lose when you swap not like for not like players - like we are discussing here. Harder to make a judgment - than when you just swap one tall for another tall.

Tonight we looked better without the slow and predictable Ling and the underdone Corey, but does that mean they miss finals?

Agree that we are so much better with the pace of Wojo in the team. And T Hunt. And the unpredictability of Laidler and Menzel.

Just cannot see GFC going into final with too many inexperienced players in the team. Maybe one - but I suspect none.

Harry has to come back - as will Joel Corey - when fit. I would bet a packet on this. And leave the captain out ? - don't think so.

Calling for him to be delisted is utterly and completely absurd, particularly with compromised drafts, the fact that we don't have heaps of key defenders on the list, and his improvement this year. However it is fine to debate whether he should be there on GF day this year. I don't think Laidler will play ahead of him, our history says we don't play the kids in September. What I did see however is that our defence can cope when it's undersized, although I suppose one might argue the ball didn't get there enough by the doggies for us to judge whether that's so, and it gives us more run the other way. I also think, and admittedly it's a side point, that if Blake has to come back in at some stage, Lonners is the most expendable tall, not because he's done anything wrong, but because we can manage without him.

Good on Laidler. He played well. Toast, and all that.

But he walked into a side that was absolutely determined to put the pedal to the metal today. And he played against a very weakened Doggies outfit.

Put Laidler in the side last week with the Magpies putting on all that pressure. Different story, methinks.

Laidler is one for the future. Lonergan is set for this campaign.

Looking at the game we looked brilliant coming out of the backline. Every player was a legitimate option and we had a lot more run with Wojak & Taylor Hunt. It looked like it could be an effective way to counter Collingwoods forwrd pressure. I'd be inclined to keep both Wojak & Taylor Hunt in the team next week and swap out Laidler for Taylor (not that Laidler was bad).

I don't think we a vunerable at all in the air, our defense is too well organised and Milburn, Hunt & Enright are all reasonably good in this regard. The big issue we face IMO is related to Harry Taylor's aerobic capacity. He simply cannot match the work rate of either Cloke or Reiwoldt for four quarters. It means Mackie or Milburn will spend time on them which is not ideal though Mackie has had some success on Reiwoldt.

One option might be to play Mooney, Pods & Hawkins (in the ruck) with either Pods or Mooney spending 5-10 minutes a quarter in defence. It would allow Taylor some rest and both Pods & Mooney have spent a fair amount of time in defense.

Don't see a need for Menzel or Laidler to play finals, they were solid and look like they'll turn out good players but I'd much rather Corey, Ling or Rooke if fit come finals time.

Problem is that if we play a side with 2 behemoth forwards (Saints, Pies, Hawks) - we really need Lonergan

We didn't need Lonergan when Scarlett & Harley were our key defenders.
We didn't need Lonergan when Scarlett & Egan were our key defenders.
And we didn't need Lonergan when Scarlett & Harry were our key defenders.

Laidler was solid tonight.

I probably agree re Harry but I don't think I agree with the solution. Despite the fact that Moons has played ok in defence at times, and Pods won the JJ Liston playing at CHB, they are both most valuable to us up the other end. Besides which, we are able to mix and match even being undersized (say for the time each qtr Harry is on the bench), Hunt played on Lake at times tonight and did fine, and Milburn copes with bigger opponents. Even Mackie can do it, though I'd be less inclined to trust him in marking contests in D50 than Dasher. The other key point is that the major opponents in Pies and Saints only have 1 genuinely dangerous key forward anyway (cloke and riewoldt) so I say when Harry's off the ground for example, you make sure Scarlett is on the most dangerous key forward at that time, and you send whoever we have to the other tall. The reality is while Lonners is a great option to have, we should be able to, and I have confidence we could, deal with a Kosi or a Dawes without him anyway.

Some of the comments in this thread are Bay 13 worthy. A lot of drivel getting around. We played a Bulldogs side tonight that was well below the best, and quite rightly gave them a hiding. But to suggest it tells us anything about who or who should not be playing is silly.

The only way Lonergan will lose his spot in the side is if the coaches decide Scarlett will play on the key forwards again. Until then, Lonergan is a crucial part of the backline.

The glorious pace!

The glorious fitness!

Let's stick with the theme....
Out Hawkins. In West.

And give Taylor another week to mend his AC joint.

Are you a saboteur, you must be nuts, he took out Cloke when Harry T couldn't.

197cm defenders, we haven't got an abundence of, he's very much required IMO.

Jeepers creepers,he doesn't play and the muppets are still bagging the shit out of him.

Piss poor thread :thumbsd:

I would leave him out.

Harry has to come back and I reckon we look like we have more balance than we have all year.

If you took emotion out of it then yes they do.

Who tagged last night by the way?

I know varcoe tagged murphy but who else tagged?

First and foremost - talk of delisting stupid and ignorant. If he leaves Geelong it should not be GFC instigated.

Does he play in our best 22, next week , Finals etc...?

As much as he has given us at times this year , we have Scarlett , Taylor and Mackie he is an extra tall that drys up our run. He does look a little frail against the full frontal zone where mobility is a trump asset. He is not a strong tall that one can back in a 1o1 but he has shown he can shut down players and is a better than average kick. I think it should be dependent on matchups and injuries. Certainly against Carlton next week I'd consider leaving him out again and let THunt grab one of their smalls
