16 teams played over the weekend, one guess and no prizes on which one laid the fewest tackles...
Here is the run-down:
It's interesting to run down those numbers...
From the top, some teams won & some teams lost (top 2 ranked teams lost)
Some theories would have you think that if losing, the other side might have more of the ball and more control of the play and so the losing team would lay more tackles... perhaps but teams 3 - 8 were all winning teams so probably not.
You might also think that players who are 'more hardened' & fitter through being in the system longer might get to more contests and therefore tackle more... looking at names like Scully & Howlett & Hocking & Reddan would not support this
Some might say that champions of the game don't get the tackle numbers as 'blue collar' types... but looking at names like Ablett & Judd & Swan & Dal Santo would not support this
So there is a large cross-section of player types featuring in the better performing 'tacklers' this week... champions, older types, young kids, ruckmen & they come from winning and losing teams...
My conclusion?
I refuse to believe that Richmond players have trained less on tackling than other players so it MUST be between the ears and more importantly... whats hanging between the legs!
If we don't grow some very very soon, no amount of planning & recruiting & drafting & hyping and tin-rattling will make one scant amount of difference...
