this great game of ours is getting seriously ****ed up by rules and crap umpires. they NEED to scrap the dragging it in rule... goddam it, there's no incentive to be the 1st to grab the ball! and there should be neutral umpires at all games

I've watched tapes of games in the 90's recently and there is no way in hell I would like football to be the way it was back then.

In my opinion, todays football is a much better spectacle than it was back then. The professionalism, speed, tactics and movement of the ball from one end to the other makes todays football brilliant to watch.

I agree that there are certain umpiring decisions that are frustrating, but you will always get that, if it isnt the dragging it in rule, it will be something else.

Whilst I rarely agree with him, Tim Lane has written a pretty good article in The Age today saying that there is no incentive to be first for the ball anymore and once you do get it you are fair game on the ground. I tend to agree, and the amount of scrummage you now get around the ground is ugly and the bloke trying to make the play is unfairly penalised. I also think that the change has been requested by the umpires as it is easier to pull a soft htb free out than bounce it.......

I watched that game on Saturday night and I was chewing the furniture. I accept that I view the world through Crows coloured glasses, but I try my best to be objective. Nevertheless, I could not escape the conclusion that we got well and truly reamed. (Again)

In general, I don't have too much of a problem with the way the game is umpired today, though I agree with comments about first-to-the-ball - and I also have an issue with use of the body to muscle for a mark. I mean, you have to contest, don't you?

My main problem is with an evident anti-Crow bias, which was also acknowledged by a neutral (well, Collingwood) mate who was with me.

We are regularly pinged for offences which are not there. This is frequently followed up with an evener-upper, which usually brings us back to the mark when we have played on to advantage. We are frequently owed clear "prior opportunity" frees, which go against us for "in the back". A blatant example against Porplyzia is still clear in my mind.

IMO, umpiring cost us about a 4-6 goal turnaroung on the night. In the event, it didn't cost us the game, but if it had been closer it would have.

OK, this can happen once in a while, but it seems to be a regular occurence for us. Does this have something to do with the way we approach the game? Is this a coaching issue? Am I unduly paranoid? Be interested to hear what others think .

There were numerous occasions in which our players (Reilly being one of them) were tackled half a second after getting the ball and subsequently being pinged for it in the centre of the ground after the bounce.

To be honest, I'm getting pretty exhausted of complaining about the umpires, nothing's going to be done anyway.

You also have the three umpires on the field having totally different interpretations of the same thing. Inconsistency is the thing that drives me crazy. One umpire at one end will call it holding the ball, whilst the umpire at the other end interprets the same thing differently and calls play on. You really have no idea what is going to happen. I too see things through crows coloured glasses but I thought we were really hard done by last night and also last week by a certain umpire. No 13 i think it was.

These were amongts the worst set of umpies I saw this year.

Pathetic work ethic and shyte judegement.

They ought to go away and let some kids in who have a clue.

Can somebody find our season stats inclusive of last night for the frees for and against. I honestly think we get the raw deal but I'm unsure as to whether it translates to a lopsided frees count. We seem to get cheap little make up frees after we have marked the ball anyway and garbage like that to square the ledger somewhat. Marics mark and goal last night as an example.

The worst aspect of the umpiring is the fact that the 50 meter penalty s often used as a tool to show their authority.

How many times has a poor umpiring decision ended in a 50 meter penalty awarded due to the protests of an innocent player.

One of the most mishandled rules and too often abused by umpires.

160 for--176 against.

Thanks beartoo. Not overly lopsided as I suspected, but it's the where and how the frees are paid that gets me. Goals resulting from frees would be interesting, as would holding the ball for and against

Listening to the commentary gives a bit of an idea...
How often do we hear
"That could have been in the back to Douglas"
"Tippett unlucky not to get free for chopping the arms"
"Some holding there on McLeod - oh, not paid"
"What chance did Van Berlo have to get rid of that?"
"OH, lucky free kick to XXXX for the Saints!!!"

Drives you spare

Footy today is definitely a much better spectacle than in bygone eras, but that doesn't mean it's beyond reproach. The "dragging it in" rule is frustrating, but I find even more frustrating is the "making an attempt" facet of the rule. Wildly flailing your arms in a transparent ruse to pretend that you are "making an attempt" is a blight on our game, and frustratingly, when you are "chicken-winged", your arm is pinned and you can't make this blatantly false attempt and get pinged for it. Meanwhile opposition tacklers tackle you to the ground, then shove the ball back underneath you and lie straight on top of you to prevent you from shovelling it out.

It makes the game look farcical and is much uglier than any amount of extra stoppages. You can't tell me that a bullshit free is less ugly than a stoppage, particularly in an era where athletic ruckmen are much more meaningful to a clearance than just wrestling for the tap.
