Terrific article by Jake Niall.
The last paragraph just about sums everything up.

DAMIEN Hardwick is the 13th man to coach the Richmond Football Club since the Tigers won their last premiership more than 30 years ago. The roll-call of those who preceded him includes two club ''immortals'', a four-time premiership coach, favourite sons and outsiders, big names and battlers.

great article. the poisoned chalice...west coast meteoric rise this year pisses me off even more, we always are in the doldrums but hopefully not for much longer

i actually feel for terry wallace, i liked him as a coach (rarity on this board) if what he says is true then he didn't really stand a chance of delivering success

Well at least we are safe from the tank tag unlike half a dozen clubs!!

To break a curse, do you need a cursed number?

Agree that it was a very good article which resonates with my own belief about how we will finally shake off the loser tag of the last 30 odd years. A complete rebuild, no short cuts, overseen by a tough but likeable son of a bitch who will stay the course.

Down to earth, Committed, Focussed, No Ego, and can admit to mistakes, clearly Dimma is not the man for Tigerland. Sack him now.

They still have 10ish premiership players. They may have had injuries but their fall was completely manufactured.

Was a good article.

Can anyone tell me why Bourke was not coach in 1984? I know he took over in 82 and took us to the GF and then we didn't make the finals in 83, but was he sacked because of that poor result or was there something more in play?

Looking at that list of coaches at least half of them needed to go or were not right for the job in the first place.

  • Wallace and Frawley both had five years and needed to go.
  • Bartlett had four years and will always argue he needed more, but in that time he had not really shown much.
  • Jeans resigned due to illness if I recall correctly.
  • Northey walked out for a better offer.
  • Walls says in the article that coaching had passed him by.
  • Was Jewell's second stint just a foolhardy attempt to re-capture the glory days?
  • Rawlings does not count as a caretaker.

I guess having four coaches in four years (83-86) and then three in three (91-93) has really tainted the club and it's coaches.

I think I'm of a certain vintage to answer your queries :D

yes Bourke was sacked cos of our failure in 1983 - we fell a long way down ladder - 2nd to 10th. That was seen as failure and our modus operandi back then was failure is never tolerated.

Considering Wallace and Frawley got 5 years, Bartlett wanting more time was not unreasonable. We were an absolute basket case when he took on the job in 88. By 91 I think we were showing signs of improvement as Knights and Lambert were maturing and Campbell debuting.

Northey did not leave for a better offer. He was sacked cos after we made finals in 95 he didn't have a contract for 96 - would never happen in this day and age. Northey went into contract negotiations with a strong hand on the back of a successful year but our President at the time (Leon Daphne) didn't seem to like Northey and didn't take kindly to giving him due credit. Negotiations broke down, Northey walked out and our club has NEVER been the same since. Thanks Leon:mad:

Jewell's second stint probably was a case of going back to the devil you know. The result says it all really. Wooden spooners. From memory that year we were in commanding positions around 3/4 time in our first 3 games (several goals up) and lost all 3. Fell apart after that.

I agree he (Northey) had every reason to be fearful, but it still doesn't detract from the fact that it was he who left the club and not the club sacking him.

KB had no money and bugger all playing talent at his disposal. He was harshly treated. Knighter was one of his best players and he was about 12 years old. Benny Gale was as raw as they come but KB had no choice but to play him.

Is it me or did dimma have that Deer in the headlights/Dead man walking look about him in the box sat night?

He looked a bit like TW at the end.

Maybe he was wondering why he hadn't picked Tuck and Gus. Both starred this weekend in the two's against quality opposition.

Here we go again with the same old shit.
I mean, why come out with this kind of crap now? Nothing has been proven, Dimma might end up on the same pile of shit the others ended up in.
Tipping that they should hold on with this shit, until things happen for us differently. Because nothing aint happening now that aint happened before. ;)
