Good point, Libba is at the coalface but we need some enforcers in the backs & forwards to proceed. We’ve got too many “good blokes”
Can't remember the name of your aged champ defender who retired kinda recently. There was also a young gun, sonofBill, who was blood and guts, love that young fella.

Heck of a coach, there's probably about a dozen teams who would swap their current coach for him. And the way he trains his players in various roles and brings guys in to the side overall is a strength.

If Martin and Bruce stayed healthy they'd probably be flag favourites.

That said, do I think Jordon Sweet should be rucking until Stef is match fit, Lewis Young playing CHB and JUH in the side as a forward pocket who mixes in a fair bit of bad with a touch of the sublime - yes.

To play Devil's advocate for a second...

Why?

They haven't finished the H&A season above 5th during his entire tenure.

Haven't won a final outside of the 2016 season.

A lot went their way in 2016, in terms of rule changes and changes to interpretations.

The flag obviously cancels out everything else in terms of value - but when looking at coaching record, it's very mediocre outside of that.

The vast majority of coaches fail to reach a 50% winning record - so to have a 57%+ winning record and make finals in 5 out of 7 seasons automatically gives him a record that is well above average.

He took over a team expected to be bottom 4 and going nowhere in 2015 and made finals and played a great first final with a young side against a Crows team where both teams were far better than a standard elimination final.

Then 2016 speaks for itself. They were as good as a top 4 side that year, the ladder was just all over the shop.

Then from 2017 to now they've been rebuilding on the run. Missing from the 2016 side:
Retired: Morris, M. Boyd, Roberts, Biggs, T. Boyd, Picken, Dickson, C Smith
Traded: Stringer, Dahlhaus, Roughead, Hamling

I'd argue that Roughead's the only mistake there, he probably should've got a better run as a key back at the Dogs. Stringer probably had to go. Hamling needed to go home and Dahlhaus they were likely right to cash out on.

The midfield core remains the same and it's obviously a premiership quality midfield but they've had to remake the entire spine, pretty much the whole backline and forward line too.

17 and 18 became write offs as that premiership team really fell apart. Then the last 2 years seasons prior to this one they've made finals which I'd say is fair enough given where they were at. Then this year right back in contention.

There's been some funny selections and so on over the years but overall he's got the results, stuck to some consistent principles about skills and ball movement and built the list back.

Riley Garcia and VDM have that in the forwardline, just need to develop a little more to becoem regular players. Both are highly rated inside the club.

I hope we take Ewan McPherson as a FS this year and develop him as a BP Duryea replacement. His brother at the Suns plays with the right vigour so could be the little mongrel defender we need.

Part of me wonders if the Bulldogs style of play just wears them out. It worked in 2016 because they had a number of injuries throughout the year and got them back in time, so there would have been a lot of fresh players. Since then though, they often have periods of the year where they look like a million dollars but then inevitably at some point hit a flat patch and it all comes crashing down.

In any case, I like Beveridge a lot, personality wise. And he seems to be quite good at getting something out of maligned players.

The Bulldogs missed top 4 by one game, and they have lost many key players from their 2016 premiership side. What more do people want from Beveridge?

Have a common sense approach towards selection (in particular how we structure the line up each week).

Also if he stopped playing favourites with certain players that would also be ideal.

A consistent structure and best 22.

I would argue that not having a best 22 is one of their strengths. Being able to bring in numerous players to fill in roles and also keep players in the team on their toes helps. I could be wrong though.

The issue with the Bulldogs the last three weeks isn't because Beveridge is weird. Its because the clearance and stoppage work has plummeted. Most likely due to a combination of teams paying closer attention to Libba and the bad form of English. The forward line is also struggling, but its hardly Beveridges fault that Bruce did an ACL.

They might have too many midfielders as well. The problem is that out of them, Bont is really the only one capable of playing well as a forward.

After being a game clear on top of the ladder in round 20.

Every single team has had bad patches. Melb were on top of the ladder for ages and lost it and then regained it. Brisbane were also in the top 4 for a long time and lost three out of four and just managed to slip back in there. Bulldogs had the unfortunate situation that their bad patch happened just before finals. They clearly played a lot better against Port though then they did against Essendon and Hawthorn, so they are already on their way to correcting it. It unfortunately for them may be too late.

I just don't think it is a diaster some are making it out to be. They didn't finish last. They finished 1 point outside top 4.

Nah it's a major disaster. Especially when you consider we might have to go Tasmania ---> Brisbane ---> Adelaide ---> Perth (if the favourites all win) to win a premiership. It's even more difficult than our 2016 run.

We actually played fairly well against Essendon. Essendon kicked unbelievably well for goal and we kicked unbelievably bad. We had 21 more inside 50s with 7 more marks inside 50s.

Expected score was something like a 35 point victory for us. That's even getting obliterated in the centre bounces.

Stef Martin might be able to save us. But I think there is no chance he gets through 4 games. He is absolutely cooked.

And it good chances are it will cost us once.

That’s about it. The last three weeks were disastrous, but it doesn’t invalidate a whole season or Bevo’s career. People have very short term focus.

We’ve gone from bottom six with eight wins in 2018 to fifth with 15 wins in 2021. It’s not exactly horrific.

If we lose this week we’ll cop it (deservedly) for blowing such a good position, but I’m far more interested in what we do over the next three or four years.

Tbh this is a good year to be top 4. Everyone is beatable. A 2nd chance/chance for a week off would have been huge.

Peter Wright was dobbing them from 60 and the Dogs were missing from the top of the square.

The grand final moving to Perth and introducing the bye between the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the finals would bring the Dogs and other 5-8 teams right back in to it. Stef would be on the Mumford program, 2 weeks on, 1 week off.

Another good finals coaching performance from Bevo, I think next week is probably a bridge too fat from LB given no Josh Bruce and playing the Oiwrr in front of a packed crowd at Adelaide Oval, bur o think this season should be regarded as a success for the Dogs and Beveridge, no matter what happens next week.

Hope Dogs fans can appreciate what a good gaffer they have at their club.
