Personally I'm an Apple advocate. Probably has a lot to do with me being a graphic designer, but regardless I've always loved them more than PC's.

PC's for me!

Mainly because I play games (like Vietcong, DoD, BF1942, MOHAA, SOF2 ect)

I've never liked Macs! Sure, IF your into graphic design, then you would have to be a ****** to use a PC, BUT for much more they not really worth it!

Good for you!

I'm not saying PC's cant to graphics design BUT I am saying that Mac's are far more superior for the job IF you are a professional Graphic Designer!

Also (i forgot to add this to my last post!), For business work and gaming, you would be a ****** to use a Mac because PC's are far more superior for them!

PCs, but your poll is a little flawed, as Linux is just an alternate operating system that runs (mostly) on PCs instead of Windows, while IIRC the latest Mac operating system is actually based upon a Macintosh version of FreeBSD (with a lot of add-ons), which is a Linux-like variation on Unix.

For instance I have three PCs at home, two of which run Linux and one runs Windows XP - although all three could run either.

Why?

Once upon a time this was true but now there is nothing that you can do on a Mac that you can't do on a PC.

OK, IF you go into a computer store that specialise in Macs and you will find that most of the programs are graphic related. Photoshop for instance was originally only available for Macs! Only by popular demand (and money! ;) ) did Adobe make a PC version!

Also, IF you go into a computer store that specialise on PCs and you will find that most of the programs are Business and Games!

So, while both CAN do everything and I NEVER said they cant, each one is still mainly used for what it was ORIGINALLY used for!

Err.. the pertinent question is "for what purpose?"

Music production, video editing, graphic/print design have traditionally been Macs. Business apps, gaming usually on PCs running Windows. Most servers on some flavour of UNIX or other. The answer will be different depending on what you want to do.

Me personally? I've been using PCs for years and years.. from DOS 3.0-6.whatever, to Windows 3.1, Win95/98/Me/2k/XP. Dabbled with Unix machines and Mac OS 9 at uni... I use a Windows NT machine at work (in fact, I have an MCP in Win NT 4 - hasn't THAT been useful? )

At home I have a self-built AMD Athlon desktop and an IBM ThinkPad (which has now been passed onto my dad to replace his old PC). Along with my mum's work Dell laptop and the SO's Dell laptop, there are 4-6 PCs in the house so I end up being the tech support helpdesk for the whole house ;)

My machine of choice? An Apple PowerBook G4 12" notebook that I bought a few months ago. I like using Mac OS X - and the apps you get with it are top-quality. I mostly use it for web design, some video editing, general web-surfing madness etc. Rock solid. Expensive (especially painful since Apple took $900 off the price of my laptop just 2 weeks ago!!) but worth every cent. Stylish, elegant and reliable.

Your kilometerage may, of course, vary :)

Sorry. Can't stand Macs. Have been using them at Uni for years (G4s, new lcd iMacs), all sh*t boxes. They are just too damn slow. I have been forced to use them this year (one of my subjects I have to use Director and Photoshop) and god damn its irritating. They are not just slow in a speed sense, but in a usability sense. Screen resolution is another problem. 10x76 is just too low.

BTW - I do not recommend having MacOSX on a G4 to anyone !!

It's not that I'm a PC fan (although I would definitely choose it over Mac) but more that I hate Macs.

Considering you can build a PC which is twice as good for what, half the price of a new iMac??

I'm not into pretty computers (like mine with the sides off, cords hanging out with drives half sitting in their slots)

Anyway, everyone has their opinion. This is mine...:)

Heh. DOS... Anyone remember stuff like XTREE Gold?

If the Macs are slow at your educational facility it would be a good bet that they have been administered poorly. The way the Edu market swaps from Mac to PC every couple of years, it would be hard to develop a decent solution either way.

The other thing I forgot to mention re: speed...

In about 2 weeks Apple will once again have the quickest consumer desktop computers available. With the introduction of the PowerMac G5 (sporting the new IBM 970 processor)...

These babies will absolutely mop up the quickest P4.

Can't wait. :D

im a fan of both macs and pc's. i use macs for graphics design with adobe photoshop and macromedia director & flash etc.

but i use pc's for 3d modelling and rendering (even though the mac is highly capable with rendering and even better processing power than pc's, but i use 3d studio max for pc and it works fine)

And be totally incapable of running most software people are used to using (especially if they work in an office).

Horses for courses Zeke. If someone comes to me and says they want to buy a computer for any sort of video editing or graphics manipulation, then I tell them to get a Mac. If they want to do office style work (ie word processing, spreadsheets etc), then I tell them to get a PC - at the lower end of the cost scale. If they want to play games, then I suggest either a top end machine or just giving in and buying a console.

Most IT professionals these days will tell you what I'm saying - no one platform is suitable to all tasks. Those in the industry that say otherwise, quite frankly are either subject to a conflict of interest or are plain idiots.

They show you one of those graphs of how quick a mac is compared to a PC in photoshop, right? Yeah, anyone can manipulate results to fit your own situation, just ask some of the big GPU manufacturers, nVidia and ATI;)

So far I haven't used a Mac which has proven to me its faster in any app than on my PC (which is pretty sub-standard). I'll wait and see whether apple can bring out a fast computer that is also stable...;)

I personally think your argument is uneducated and invalid. In my office we have both Macs (running OSX) and PC's - and in all honesty there is nothing I can do on the PC that I can't do on the Mac.

Macs running OfficeX can do any of the word processing, spreadsheet, powerpoint presentations etc that a PC machine can.

I would wave the flag the other way... Macs are actually far more versatile than people think - it is only ignorance that sustains this mentality.

Yeah, and I've heard that argument a thousand times for Linux too!
