I'm not sure how big of an impact John Madden has on the Madden series nowadays, but he sure did have an impact early in the development process when Trip Hawkins was still there.

Check out what he said to the developers when he was shown an early version of the game. Quotes were found in the book All Your Base Are Belong To Us: How Fifty Years of Videogames Conquered Pop Culture by Harold Goldberg.

"In a chapter detailing how Trip Hawkins started Electronic Arts, it mentions that Trip dreamed of making high art that would have players crying. At some point that took a back seat to EA’s true calling: being the biggest sports game maker in the world. Early on the company paid big money to sports legends to give authenticity to their games, and when Trip decided to make the definitive football game, he enlisted legendary Oakland Raiders coach and commercial pitchman John Madden to be the (giant) face of the game. When the developers showed Madden an early version of the game that could only display seven players per team, John wasn’t shy about sharing what he thought.

“**** that and **** you people. Either we do it ****in’ right or we don’t ****in’ do it at all.” The team was pretty shocked to hear him saying things he’d normally keep confined to the locker room, but it ultimately pushed the team to get their football game as close to perfect as possible. They toiled for years, even as some in the company wanted to cancel the seemingly unending project, and when it finally did launch it created a dynasty that will probably exist as long as people throw footballs and the NFL gives exclusive contracts."

Harold Goldberg's book is filled with game development anecdotes worth sharing

IGN has posted details on Madden NFL 12 Superstar Mode with a Franchise Mode article coming tomorrow.

Check out some of the new Madden NFL 12 Superstar Mode screenshots, here

"Practices now have a purpose because of the new experience points system. Each practice session gives you ten plays to rack up points. Using an improved version of Gameflow, Madden's computer-controlled play-calling option, you run through random plays you might see on game day. The better you perform, the more points you earn. And those points in turn are spent to improve your player. There are no silly focused sessions to improve specific abilities. It's simple and it should open up considerably more freedom in Superstar mode. As a result, Tiburon's hope is that no two Superstars will be the same.

To that end, there's more to your player than just his attributes. New this year are traits and tendencies, which you set to determine the mental aspects of your player. After all, two linebackers might have a high tackle rating, but one could always play it safe and wrap up the ball carrier while the other always wants to put a little hurt into the opponent."

Also helping to separate players with similar ratings is the reborn player roles, which some might remember from last generation's Madden. There are more than 20 roles, most of which are earned by your play on the field. These set who you are within your organization. You could be a wily veteran "mentor," for example, who helps a rookie improve during the season. Come back to IGN on Friday for a whole lot more on player roles and how they reshape Franchise mode.

M12, the QB auto-drop has been removed.

Personally, i think it's potentially bad again. It means to me--because they've done a lot of work with coverages and zone coverages, so the flats are better protected removing the exploit behind the flats....therefore nano-blitzes are just as bad or worse, so they have to remove the auto-drop to allow gamers to even pull the QB out from under center. Just sprinting back and to the side every snap, no proper play-design mechanics involved.

Whereas APF, the line holds much better, allowing QBs to do their automated 3, 5, and 7 step drops, so it looks and plays more realistically true to the design of each different type of play.

GG, are you even going to buy Madden this year? No? Then why give a shit, let EA sports turn their brilliant franchise they had into a pile of shit.

Like always I'll download the demo and evaluate from there. The odds are high M12 will still have all the problems of Madden since they got the exclusive license.

I really do enjoy playing backbreaker more now. I kept giving it a chance and it's grown on me. Obviously a BB2 with more features etc ideal.

As much as I love APF 2K8, one does want to play a new game, hold out for the newest best. APF and 2K5 still the best to date is pretty sad state of affairs.

I'm hoping the community for backbreaker gets bigger so I can just play that with real NFL rosters.

However I use to love franchise mode, now it's the same predictable garbage. Exclusive Liscence really screwed over NFL being able to market their game within the game consoles of everyone around.

Franchise mode in M12 Online and offline could be worth purchasing M12 for.

Why I wont dispel possibility of buying it, even tho the gameplay is still going to be shit like always and/or with newer problems.

When PSN gets back up, add me on PSN for some BB games some time.

The current BB NFL rosters for PS3 are shit compared to X360, but the PS3 guy who does it is updating it very soon.

His website looks down, but his forum is here.

Btw, you need an NTSC BB disc for roster file sharing to work.

hopefully it is decided by when you go to ground
I can swear this was in madden 08
Your Offensive lineman can be all muddy in the 4th quarter in rain, even when never hitting the ground.
Hate it :thumbsd:

Good article on the NFL/EA exclusive license, suggesting EA are actually not happy with it, that the NFL are the ones who push for exclusive license thruout their business operations.

Full article

No matter where the most blame is placed by gamers when it comes to the NFL exclusive license, whether that be the league or EA Sports or an equal share, the extension of a year to the current contract and the manner it was negotiated could be telling. Based on each side’s actions it appears that the NFL is much more in favor of the deal as it currently stands than EA Sports who took a reduction on this season’s payments while tacking on another year.

yeah, just the aesthetics.
true to life team entrances, mascots, broadcast-like cut-shots that all look incredibly impressive.

however, the nuts and bolts of the game, game-play, is where 90% of people spend their time interacting with the game. and apart from the better zone coverages and the collision tackling system, the rest of the game is "as is" to M11.

Going by that screen, it looks like the old school play calling screen. With the formation up the top and three plays down below. Surprised they brought that back. Looks nice though.

Breaking news on online franchise features for M12.
Two important links....

EA's announcement

When it comes to the tight schedule of an annual development cycle, we have to make tough decisions, and it became apparent as we continued to work through our campaign that there was no way to deliver a deep, fully connected Online Franchise experience that you deserve this year. Therefore, there will be no additions to Online Franchise mode in Madden NFL 12.

LeagueManager.net's Announcement

It is with much excitement that I am able to announce that we have been successfully able to get a working relationship set up that has given the leagueManager team exclusive access to online franchise data and remote procedural calls. This unique collaboration with EA SPORTS, a first of its kind, proves the Madden NFL 12 teams dedication to providing an experience to their fans that hasn't been previously available. The Madden team has always been at the forefront of a new wave of community/developer relations in the gaming world through their leveraging of social media, and this is another step in the right direction in building a completely engaging fan experience. What this all means is that come Madden NFL 12, the leagueManager experience will be brought to an entirely new and innovative level.

Through this working relationship, EA SPORTS will be providing leagueManager with the following....

What leaguemanager.net will be offering therefore...

Full realistic player contract data
leagueManager will have 100% exact replica contract structures as offline franchise. leagueManager will provide leagues the option of running an "NFL-style" real contract based online franchise or the point based contract system that is already in place. leagueManager will replicate contract negotiations, cap penalties, player holdouts, and much more to add to the realism of the GM side of online franchise. As always, leagueManager will also be able to be used without a contract based system.

Complete tie-ins to the draft process
Access to all of the controls of the online franchise draft will give leagueManager the ability to have a custom draft console that will enable leagues to run a draft in any manner they please. A draft can be run over multiple days to accommodate the busy schedules of owners, paused and restarted at the will of the commissioner. Draft pick trading will be enabled and tracked via leagueManager . Draft boards will correctly draft for owners who cannot make a draft.

Complete CPU controlled team intelligence
CPU controlled teams will now have trade logic in place. CPU controlled teams will re-sign players needed and cut players not needed. CPU controlled teams will bid on free agents needed during the free agency bidding period.

Commissioner controls via the web
The ability to invite and boot members of your online franchise via the web. The ability to add/drop players from any team.

Streamlined access to all online franchise data
Using the remote procedural calls how they were intended to work instead of the current way they were obtained via reverse engineering, leagueManager will be able to optimize the way you interact with the tool and provide a higher level of user experience.

Adding these incredibly exciting features to leagueManager will only boost the current list of available features that is being upgraded and optimized:

Complete player resign period
The new resign period will be receiving an overhaul which will engage owners in contract negotiations with their players that are up for contract re-sign.

Free Agency bidding period
An optimized and more efficient free agency bidding period with a player watch list, trending, and other innovations will take this feature to the next level.

Yearly player awards, weekly player awards, and Pro-Bowl rosters
All of these features will still be available along with optimizations and new ways to analyze this data.

Full stat tracking for the life of the franchise and opponent scouting
We will still be tracking statistics over the life of your franchise and some new ways to analyze this data will completely transform the way you scout your opponent. No longer will you be heading in to a game without a clue how to game-plan for your opponent.

Along with the above updates made possible via our collaboration with EA SPORTS, leagueManager will also provide customized league discussion boards and private messaging to enhance league communication and facilitate a more engaging online franchise experience without the technological knowledge needed to set up your own website or forums. We will be rolling out community features that will allow you to feel a part of both the leagueManager community and your individual franchise community.

With all of the above information, leagueManager will continue its mission to provide the most complete and satisfying online franchise experience possibly available. We have formalized the addition of a team of developers and support staff to ensure that when Madden NFL 12 drops, your leagues will be able to successfully set up and run your online franchise using leagueManager .

In the next coming weeks, we will release more details and screenshots of the new updates. We will be piloting the new leagueManager software to a select group of leagues in early August for feedback and optimizations. If you would like to get on the list for piloting the new software, send an email to support@myleagueManager.net.
