Fair enough, I'm going to assume until proven otherwise that Melbourne are looking for a pick upgrade for taking on Dawes' contract. :)

From Collingwood? What are you going to upgrade, your 3rd round pick?

STOP MAKING ME THINK ABOUT TRADING FOR DAWES.

If Peter Rohde has an ounce of intelligence he'll trade for Monfries rather than FA'ing him. Essendon won't get any compensation if we take him as an FA due to already bringing in Goddard, and Port will probably lose a decent hunk of our Pearce/Chaplin compensation if we get him as an FA. Give them a third rounder or a second round upgrade and everyone wins. Essendon gets something instead of nothing and Port don't have to give up as much.

inb4 'if Peter Rohde had an ounce of intelligent he wouldn't get Monfries at all'.

I think we're already getting a glimpse of how clubs will look to manipulate the free agency.
Collingwood has signed Lynch but looks set to trade out Dawes. They're players who play very similar roles but Dawes is 5 or 6 years younger so you wonder why Collingwood would be doing it. I think the answer is that they get Lynch for free and then by trading Dawes they get a decent draft pick as well. They've effectively gained a draft pick without losing out in their list. Then when Lynch is ready to retire there will be someone else they can grab via free agency.

If they lose Wellingham to free agency, then they've cost themselves some compo by bringing in Lynch anyway, so your theory won't hold up if that happens.

Is anyone else of the opinion that clubs shouldn't receive compo from the afl for a FA leaving? Hardly seems fair that 2 teams can influence the draft of 16 others.

Harsh on the team that lost a player, but ends up ridiculous if say 4 teams all lose a good player, all get mid 1st round compensation and suddenly the difference between 9th and 10th is 5 picks rather than 1.

totally agree, it goes against what the draft is. There should be no compensation, for example;
Geelong come out of successful period with many great players who are now getting old and the team will naturally drop away. What if Chapman, Bartel, Scarlett etc go to other clubs via free agency when they are 29yo. Geelong get 3 good compensation picks. Then they are back to being a great team without having to use their real draft picks. There needs to be time for the draft to naturally effect teams

+1

I do not think there should be compensation for players lost in free agency at all, it defeats the purpose of free agency! If you lose a player to another team, it means that you have cap space to pursue another player to fill the gap.

You are going to get situations where teams won't match offers on restricted free agents because they would rather have the compensation pick. Compensation picks should not be used as inducements for not matching offers, either match the offer or let the player walk.

Yep, the fabrication of draft picks is a stupid idea. Just look at what we did with Brennan. At the very least, they should be severely undervalued ie. an end of first round for Goddard and work backwards from there.

You do realise that Wellingham isn't a free agent??

Goodbye flawed priority picks, hello absolutely flawed compo picks
Only in the AFL
Love those magical fairy picks that pop out of thin air. The AFL loves ****ing with the draft.

When is a first round pick not a first round pick? When it's after pick 18 in an 18 team comp.

Before we had tanking in the season proper to get gifted picks

Now they are tanking at the trade table to get better gifted picks

Wait and see what the compensation is first it may scare teams off doing it in the future.

I hope so. For mine, the compo should be far inferior to the player.
My thoughts exactly. In general, players coming up to their 7th year of service, would be on 2, 3 or 4 year contracts. That means that clubs have 2, 3 or 4 years notice that the contract is going to expire and to re sign their player before it gets to the point where he becomes a free agent. If they haven't signed them by then, they don't deserve compensation.

The problem is dumb clubs **** it up for everyone else. WTF is Melbourne going to trade for Dawes? WTF is Port going to trade for Monfries?

Seriously... there is always someone doing something stupid.
Port getting Monfries for pick 40-50something is a good deal for them. Remembering they also get compo picks for losing Chaplin and Pearce to Free Agency.

Yeah, in the end it didn't cost much, I was surprised Essendon let him go cheaply, they chronically over-rate their players which is why they have a terrible trade reputation. I guess they needed the cap space to squeeze Goddard in.

I think people who are expecting a bounty for compensation similar to that given for the new teams are in for a disappointment, AFL said free agency compensation would not be as generous. I am surprised clubs went hammer and tong without really knowing what is even a rough idea of the compensation they are likely to receive.

Well he could've walked and Port wouldve got him for free. So why not get something? Hes obviously not worth much to them as indicated by his contract offer.

If Clinton Young to Collingwood rumors are right, I'm liking what we've done.

Essentially replaced Dawes and Wellingham with Lynch and Young who combined would be on less money, then get draft picks as well from the trades.

I don't understand what the fuss is about regarding compensation. The only clubs that it will really have an impact on this year are port and st Kilda. saints might get pick 13 and port might get an end of round 1 or 2. How is this such a big deal. Probably a little biased but I would like to think if any other club was in ports position I would think they deserve compensation given they are by far the team most impacted
By the introduction of gc and gws, have lost 2 players (maybe 3) in the first year of FA, and have had a player lose their life. It's not like they will Become a powerhouse out of this.

The real issue here is the ridiculous concessions given to gws and gc. I can't believe how easily we have all
Accepted this. And here is everyone moaning about compensation picks to lowly ranked rebuilding sides that will most likely be picks 20+ in an already compromised draft.
