I would say that the name of this thread should be "Mark Johnson possible vindication".

He'd still have a bit to prove before he gets a game in round one.

I thought he looked like he had a bit of a case of opening night nerves. He'll be better for the run and if he plays this week I'm sure he'll be a lot more settled. My buddy could become a key player if he can step up and take some of the load with Hase gone.

Don't be surprised to see a lot more of Solly through the midfield. They have taken some weight off him and he looked good last night.
I reckon yopu might be on to something.

And for the record I hope MJ II does turn out well. I just think he's still got a bit to show to get there.

hes a good player, and most people knew that. the whole thing about drafting him was really his age, and why fremantle with an ageing list would take another 28 year old.

i rate him, good tackler and can also be a match winner on his day.

cheap buy - so worth the punt. did ok

is very slow though....but, i think he'll be better in melbourne games.....jury still a long way out IMO

Why are Essendon doing this to themselves. Solomon was up there with Rodan last year for the steal of the year. This year Mark Johnson could be another one. Similar players as well. It is a huge case of dejavu. It is a huge case of dejavu.

essendon are going for youth, while solomon and MJ could've played some good footy for them i doubt in their time they were going to win a premiership with the dons. so from their point of view it wasnt really worth hanging onto them.

also i dont think solomon had a year on par with rodan. you underestimate the year rodan had.

Johnson will certainly offer quite a bit.
Remember we have Foster, Ibbo, Mayne, O'Brien, Browne (injury permitting) to step up to the mantle.

And then Bell will be in and out of the team this year.

whats the deal with bell? will he be training with the club at all in preseason or playing any preseason games?

Rodan did well, but i think you underestimate the year Soloman had.
Rodan was the steal for the year but hoogs only pointed out he was upthere + up there he was.

The leadership, toughness and experience that the two players bring would have been good for them, considering they didn't demand much money and both players have four or so years left in them, so from my point of view it was worth holding on to them. That's just my opinion though. Why don't they trade Lloyd and Lucas, because although they have some good footy ahead of them, they won't be winning a premiership there either.

By saying Solomon was up there with Rodan, I'm just saying that he was close. Who else would have been the second best 'steal' last year?

PS. Bell will probably play next week, according to Harvs.

solomon is only 27

there was more to him leaving i think. they only offered him a one year deal. he is a completely different player to the one who arrived here

as a paid up essendon supporter (who now watches almost all freo games) i can answer this question...the club was IMO not being run as it should. may be a bit of sour grapes but i hope johnno turns it around and bites us in the butt like solly did last year. neither should've been gotten rid of...hope they serve you well.

i think you're wrong nesski. getting rid of old yet good players is a positive for essendon. face it, you're not going to win a premiership in the next 4 years and you need to blood all the youngsters you can. you have a good enough spine to support them until the develop. by the time they do, players like lucas, lloyd, fletcher and micheal will be gone and gumbleton, ryder etc will step up into those roles.

if you guys kept them, new draftees wouldnt be getting a game so what would be the point of winning 10 or so games a year if it meant you werent going anywhere?

the bombers made the right decision.

the dockers on the other hand are at the other end where they're quite old and can challenge for a premiership (or so i've heard).

not sure about kepler though...

i agree with the premiership bit, but i think there were other players that could've been gotten rid of instead. i didn't agree with getting rid of such great leaders (especially johnno...he's a good guy, and b&f winner). i think the club sometimes shows a lack of respect where some is needed. they both had a couple of years left in them (especially solly) and could've helped in the development of youngsters. from what i saw last year, the addition of solly to the freo team bought extra strength and grunt (which people said was missing from the squad), someone who'll put their body on the line. that's something that will always be beneficial....

Good onya nesski, I was very sceptical about Solly last year, but can now confirm he is one of my favourites. He has taken over from Cookie as the hard nut, and he knows where the goals are, a gun !

If all training reports are true then Johnson will get game time

Good to have another Vic having Freo as their no2 team :D

edit : anti, i am going to kick you in the nuts

both clubs have done the right thing imo..
fremantle got two solid players for not much at all and essendon needed to get rid of some players to make room for youth and as meantioned earlier they arent players who would push you for a premiership...

i still didnt want to get rid of them though, they were probably my two favourite players.

also i dont think people are right in saying that they have changed since being at essendon. i think the coaching is more suited to them.. both cant really be played in the backline anymore because they are too small to take the big forwards and too slow to take the small forwards. because of their toughness and good marking ability they can make great forwards to can play defensively and also kick goals.. stints in the midfeild are always an option too.. sheedy was playing them out of position like most of the players on the essendon list.

also, solomon was washed up at essendon. he was never going to produce the footy he had in 2007 for freo at the dons. i think it all went a bit stale for him in melbourne.

And they gave him away for what?nothing

I must say i think we did alright on our trade for Solomon. Very happy with Houli and Reimers so far. Good to see Solomon do well for you guys, but i definately don't think we lost anything in that trade.

Soloman is a smart & hard player. I was aware of him when he was @ essendon, but I didn't really appreciate his work ethic and presence he has on the field and for the team until you just watch him go about his business during a match. I reckon he makes a few players shirk off the ball at times.
Seems both clubs are happy with what we got....

Solomon was being played across the HB line at essendon and Freo moved him into more of a forward role. at the time of his trade this was reported as one of the main reasons he was unhappy at dons.. on account of their lack of options across HB.

i reckon this + teaming up with best buddy Taz had a lot to do with it.
