No, its not. Its just an early statement of intention from a player who will be uncontracted by then. :D

He just needs to make it clear that he's willing to play for any club for the first two years in the AFL, but once it expires, he will go to the Crows or into the pre-season draft.

What do you reckon the response would be from the drafting clubs?

Heh. It'd certainly make the Dogs wonder if Sylvia was a better option.

That would definetly attract interest from the AFL. It would make Bulldogs 2nd guess whether or not to draft him. If the passed hi up I am sure Carlton would snap him up in a second.

True. You'd probably still need a top 5 pick for a gambit like that to work, and one ballsy kid to play it. The theory is sound though.

True but clubs might look at it this way. We get a gun, develop him so he will be worth a lot in terms of trade value so looking at it we can win either way.

Except if the Crows do a Collingwood and offer a dud and a draft pick, and Cooney goes into the preseason draft for the effective loss of a #1 pick.

This is an early opportunity for them to avoid this kind of headache and not lose the house. It would have to make for a tempting proposition.

Quite possibly BUT I would have thought its a risk worth taking.

Maybe it would need to be combined with a Crows press release stating that they feel Cooney is, and only will be, worth a third round pick in a trade.

Though I guess by then everyone will know its a scam. If you were Collingwood though, you'd get away it - unfortunately the Crows lack a history of being trading bastards for this to work.

After hearing what Crow supporters have been saying for more than one season, the following excerpt is the surprising thing to me:-

"Adelaide managed one minor surprise - delisting 202-centimetre ruckman Ben Marsh, a member of the Crows 1998 premiership team."

I took the above from THIS internet article.

If the reporter had any notion of supporter sentiments, there is no way he'd be surprised at Marsh's delisting

When the Crows have their first pick the following rookie ruckmen should still be available

Jason Whitehead, Woodville W/T Aug 28, 85, 197 cm 84 kg
Tall, outside ruckman with an excellent leap and quick hands. Has good endurance. SA U/18 representatives this year. From Moonta FC

Andrew Ericksen, Sandringham Dragons Jul 17, 85, 203 cm 90 kg

Tall, outside ruckman who is athletic. Has also played top-level basketball at junior level. AIS-AFL Academy member in 2002 and Vic Metro representative in 2003. From Scotch College.

Daniel Batson, Nth Ballarat Rebels May 8, 86, 201 cm 86 kg

Tall, outside ruckman who has great reach and sound kicking skills. Had injury interrupted end to his season.

Rowan Andrews, Tassie Mariners May 11, 85, 198 cm 82 kg

Tall, inside ruckman who is capable of taking a contested mark. Has excellent work ethic and attitude. Tasmania U/18 representative this year. From Clarence FC.

Brent Hall, South Fremantle Jan 7, 86, 198 cm 94 kg

Tall, inside ruckman with terrific athletic ability and courage. Good below his knees for a tall player. Vice-captain of the WA U/18 Championships team in 2003. AIS-AFL Academy member in 2003. From Williams FC.

The above details came from the AFL website

My guess is that apart from Kepler Bradley, the majority of the good young ruckmen will last beyond the first round, hence giving the Crows a fair choice at their first pick, if they want to tred that pathway.

what's the bet we re-draft him?

Silly, silly move imo.

He wont last that long.
For all of his shortcomings;I wouldve kept him.
And for all of you people on this board that have bagged him in the past 12 months....I hope you're satisfied now that he has gone

Definitely one the crows should look out for. A very good kick, he's tall and athletic and would be great for the Crows. If you ask me perhaps a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick, especially if all the nominated ruckmen had been taken by the stage (or even by our #14 pick, although I doubt it).

Hopefully we do pick him up, as he's a great ruckman and what this club needs in search of talls.

I am drawing up the contract already for this bloke:)

Inside and outside are terms usually used to refer to midfielders - inside midfielders being seen as ballgetters that give it off, with outsiders being the receivers with the skills to finish.

This year it seems to be being applied to everyone, which is confusing. I think they might be using `outside' to mean `soft', but in a nice way.

Yeah, yeah I get that much.

Soft in a nice way? Hmmm...

Nah, just happy to get the good news when I got back.

I don't need to reminded about Marsh as he has gone now.

Whoohoo! :D

Adios, big Ben.

Let's not get too cut up about him getting cut.

If one of Clarke or Biglands is out injured, the other can up the workrate from 50% of a match to 80%, and we could use a key position player as a mobile pseudo-ruckman in a Goodes-Darcy-esque (obviously not as good) role. Robran played this role well at times in 1999.
Exactly!

We are likely to draft another ruckman from the SANFL/WAFL/VFL who can step up better than Marsh could any way (refer to the SANFL GF!!!)

If we get short of ruckman, either Perrie, Steven or McGregor could do the job as a stop-gap.

I'm not fussed, as AFC have finally seen the light.

I hope that Jars is right & that more changes are to happen. As has been mentioned, surely Parker deserves a spot ahead of Smith.

Crowell is a little unlucky as he is one of the few players who can play on a small nippy forward (apart from Edwards).

Can't argue with the other delistings.

I'm relying on Jars here. I really am. Smith must go and Parker must come onto the list.

KG and Cornesy were talking about this tonight. Cornesy was saying that every Crows supporter he talks to can't understand why Parker hasn't been upgraded to the main list as well as Skipworth.

KG said that he would ask John Reid about this when they had Reidy on later - he didn't ask. :(

Crowell was always going to be delisted. A fringe player with a knee reconstruction was never going to survive. I wish him all the best though because he is a great guy.

The others have earned their delistment.
