After an up & down year, he really needs to look at where he is for 2013.

Will he break into the best 22 or is he a fringe player at best?

Simply not up to it. If you think a pre season will change him a footballer youre mistaken. Hes slow. Send him packing back to Ireland and recruit a kid in the draft!

I'm pretty sure his contact is 2-3 years...

Was dumb to bring an ex fringe player back regardless, all we managed to do was tighten an already tight salary cap and waste another first rounder

He could become handy if the interchange rule get changed to 2 & 2 or 80 interchanges a game. He has elite endurance but I'm just not sure what role will suit him best. Otherwise he us just depth.

He can't have lost that much pace in the last 3 years. He was never FAST, but you would never call him a plodder.

He's a turtle now because he's been doing nothing for years and just rocked up to gaelic games over there with minimal training. Needs to be pushed this pre-season!

1 year from now, we'll probably look back on this thread and laugh.

He looked pretty lost out there this year, didn't really want to put the big bumps in either or hard tackles. Jury is still out on Marty, but I hope he can get back to his best, it'd be a waste otherwise.

I think we were planning to get Elliott regardless with that pick
We could have got Elliot with pick 50 odd from GWS.

Look at the st.kilda trade with them, they were selling everything at bargain pin prices for as many picks as they could get. We stupidly offered pick 25 and off GWS went.

Laugh at what a joke Marty has become.

Has his attributes but, I think he is just too slow for the modern game.

He reads the play well and can get his hands on the ball but he is not a strong tackler, is crap overhead and is just slow across the ground.

Just needs a bit more zip and ticker for the physicality/decision making under pressure. Not sure he will develop either with a preseason, but you could comfortably slot him as a forward/back flanker, a winger or a tagger if he did.

He started the year well and ended badly. Says to me that there's something to work with and that he just ran out of puff, much like Sidebottom. Could be the go-to player to shut down the high half forward playermaker types in the future.

A depth player, possibly even if he improves, but let's not write him off yet.

Tbh he was basically the steak knives in the deal to secure Elliott which was our main priority. Got him back for really next to nothing.

Still though as stated, depth player. Good tank. One of his best games for the year was the ANZAC game on Stanton where his run wasn't required with ball in hand. Seeing as though we don't go down that tagging route too often, not really sure what else there is for him to make best 22 (full squad available).

We shouldn't have welcomed Marty back into the side with open arms but rather have kept JMac and given him a proper go. What did he get, 8 games in 3 or 4 years? Shameful....

Why make this connection? What are you trying to achieve?

I have read lots of comments from people calling for more focus on 20m kicks, and I reckon if Marty breaks his way into the team it will definitely be on the strength of his short passing and unique style of kicking.

Remember when Robert Harvey was getting towards the end of his career, all the commentators kept harping on about how he has the best 20m kick the game has ever seen? I hope he stays on the coaching panel for next year and really focuses on helping our midfielders improve their short game.

Elliott could have been a first rounder had he fallen through to the draft as it was. Was ranked the second best junior in the draft camp testing last year. We got a fair bargain in reality with the picks we gave for what we got in return. Elliott himself was worth it, Clarke was just a bonus.

Clarke I'd like to see play up the field more on a wing. Can run with anyone and with his long precise kicking has some playmaking potential and the forwards would love to be on the end of some of his kicks.

At the end of the day he probably doesn't make it, but I'm still intrigued.
