We have to pay him to move to the other side of the world and he is 23 not 18 like most other rookies

Yes, and there may also be LAFHA tax implications which could work to his benefit.

(Any accountants on here who can explain that?)

USA citizens must pay full U.S tax whether they are resident or not, so maybe his salary is structured to cover his total tax bill (paying double tax)?

And that'd be because 99.7% of them are a waste of time, space and effort that could be pumped into kids who can kick, handball, mark and run and bounce a ball. I understand the whole "costs nothing" to have them on the list attitude but I don't agree with it as it does cost time to "develop" these blokes when that time from those development coaches would be better spent on guys who can already actually play the game and more importantly understand the 360 degree dimensions of the game which differ to every other game in the world.

A player's contribution to the team can be greater (or lower) than their contribution on the field.

Of course player spots are precious, and you can't normally gift a player a spot simply because they're a positive influence on team morale, training standards, etc.

But category B rookies spots can afford to be a bit more generous with that.

No doubt Cox is being recruited with the full intent of becoming a legitimate AFL footballer (with a low probability of success)

And if he never plays a game, however through his presence on the team he is a strong positive influence for team morale and fitness training standards, then his appointment could be deemed to have been some success.

If Mr Cox senior is jumping online now to check out what Collingwood supporters are like.....he must be scratching his head. Welcome to Big Footy.
If he is I say welcome, get an account and tell about this son of yours.

OF course as well as this nobody has mentioned the accompanying local media which surrounds such selections, promoting the game overseas for the benefit of all clubs...

I'm not holding my breath considering the many failed experiments we have had with imports who have never played the game before.

Shae Mac, Caolan Mooney, Kevin Dyas etc. Marty Clarke was very good in his first stint but his return has been underwhelming.

However, good luck to him.

Well there is about 20% Chance of Him Making it

We ought to get a new ruck coach ASAP, too much for Huddo to coach 3 rookies and play VFL every week and we will need to pour pretty much full time resources into them.

Unlikely Hudo will play on next season, even more so with Cox and Moore added to a squad that could potentially have Gault. Witts and Grundy even occasionally. Of course Hudo going onto the VFL list offers a nice safety net.

I haven't seen a lot of Cox...

(Fortunately I think.)

But 23 year old... I would assume he has basketball player body.... Probably a year of adding some "padding" as he Is entering a contact sport.

I'd try him as a key forward... Hopefully he plays like Tippet and Buddy more than a ruck since Pies are set at ruck Position.

Yeah, big Cox likely to play deeper.

Fairly sure cat B rookie is outside the cap
Wow I saw blaze on the alert and thought shit here we go again but omg a civil response.
So could we spend 5 mil bringing in a soccer superstar from Argentina or something?
Any limit or is this an area for the rich clubs to indulge themselves in..

How you know that?

He could ask you the same question Dave... It is an opinion.

I agree though - I would put it at around 3-5%. 20% is more the chances of a normal draftee outside the first round I would suggest. Obviously depends on the definition of 'making it' but either way, hsi chances of success are pretty slim

Wrong, the answer is 11%

can't believe the negativity on here, kid is well and truly young enough. could take to the sport like a duck to water, as for not playing contact sports, he's got brothers, he's played roller-hockey, he will be fine. End of this year we will retire Hudson and Lynch and almost certainly delist Gault, Cox and Moore will come on and be playing VFL behind Cloke, Reid and White in the AFL forward line, Frost, Brown and Keeffe in the AFL backline, and Grundy and Witts in the AFL ruck. Now, there is no way the AFL side is going to field Frost, Brown, Keeffe, Grundy, Witts, Cloke, Reid and White all in the same line-up, so the best 6 or 7 of those 8 will play regular AFL while Moore and Cox learn thier trade in the VFL, in a few years they will hopefully be ready to have a crack.

I think he will make it.

Whatever happens will be fun watching him in the VFL next year.

Will be super exciting if he starts to do some things well
