Big boxing cash on offer for Mason, Hall
Australian boxing identity Angelo Hyder is prepared to pay football stars Willie Mason and Barry Hall a six figure sum to fight in the ring and believes a match up between the two colourful stars would pack out the Sydney Entertainment Centre.
Rugby league Test forward Mason intends on having a professional boxing bout in January, with the issue playing a pivotal part in his dispute with the Bulldogs.
Sydney Swans AFL forward and co-captain Hall boxed as a youngster and has suggested he would like to return to the ring at some stage.
Hyder, who is one of Australia's busiest and most influential boxing figures in his capacity as a trainer, manager and promoter, hit the headlines earlier in the year when he suggested Hall could earn up to $10 million by switching to boxing.
Hall, who is contracted to the Swans until the end of the 2009 season, subsequently downplayed the prospect of him boxing while he was still contracted to the Swans.
However, the tenacious Hyder said he and leading trainer Johnny Lewis would try to meet with Hall once they returned from South Africa where they were assisting Gairy St Clair in the junior lightweight world title eliminator he lost to Cassius Baloyi.
"He (Hall) wanted to finish the season off and then talk about it," Hyder said from Johannesburg.
"We are planning to have a meeting with him, Johnny (Lewis) and I as soon as we get back."
While it's highly unlikely the Swans or Hall himself would agree to fight Mason in January, Hyder felt a fight could be just what the Swans skipper needed after a disappointing 2007 campaign.
"Barry didn't have a good year last year, he should be doing anything he can to get a bit of spark," Hyder said.
"I think boxing is the best possible thing he can do, I think it would do him the world of good."
Hyder said he would pay Hall and Mason $100,000 each and expected such a contest would also attract interest from pay television as well as drawing a capacity crowd at the venue.
Both Mason and Hall are listed at 195 centimetres height on their respective club websites though the league star's recorded weight of 114kgs, is 12kgs heavier than the AFL champion.
Although Mason hasn't had the boxing experience of Hall, Hyder was adamant the big forward would be a formidable opponent.
"With that sort of aggression and size, you don't need a hell of a lot of skill," Hyder said.
Mason was scheduled to start boxing training this week with a view to fighting in January.
He suggested last weekend that he was just looking for a one off fight.
