Was at the game and watched him closely.

Racked up the stats tonight but appalling disposal and not accountable for his opponent.

I have a bad feeling about this.....

Re: Masten = The New Chad Fletcher?

Watched the game with 2 eagles supporter mates and by halftime they were calling Masten "Fletch". Can find the ball, but kicking is woeful.

Re: Masten = The New Chad Fletcher?

Masten is coming along OK, just.

His skills have not been fantastic, but he is no orphan there.

Re: Masten = The New Chad Fletcher?

Seems to struggle with disposal in the same kind of situation every time. Whenever he has the ball and has 2 or 3 seconds to make a decision he'll either:
a) Take the first option which is often just a long kick to nothing (does this less and less now)
b) Assess the situation, look for option 2 or 3, but then panic and make a skill error (been doing this more lately)

To me, whenever he knows he has time he is quite a good user of the ball, and when he is in the middle of the pack and has to dispose on instinct along his hands are quite good.

So i think he really just needs more time to get used to the speed of AFL, this should come with experience and size as he'll have more confidence that he can hold off a tackle long enough to make the right decision. He's still only played about 20 games and is almost the lighest player on the list.

The fact that he got 29 possessions tonight is encouraging in my opinion.

Re: Masten = The New Chad Fletcher?

I thought he was good.

It shows that if he is running around in the midfield he can find a stack of the ball.

As someone said earlier I dont think it's that he has a bad kick on him but I think he just panics abit.

What's with the terrorist beard? If I was airport security I'd definitely cavity search him.

Re: Masten = The New Chad Fletcher?

Terrible thread. Probably his best game, field kicking was better than good. Handballing in close was superb, good in the packs. Lots of inside 50s, lots of run. If he had have kicked a goal or two, you'd be raving about how good he was. I thought his disposal overall was good tonight.

Good post.

Re: Masten = The New Chad Fletcher?

I dont get it.

First he couldnt find the ball and thus he was a spud even though he has been getting some decent amount of possessions. 29 tonight.

Now he can't kick the ball, yet he hit a target for most of the game until the last quarter.

He is actually progressing very well and Woosha is giving him more game time in the middle. One more solid pre-season and he should explode.

I agree. I was just happy to see him carry the ball a bit more than usual. And kick into the fwd 50 more than usual.
