- MELBOURNE DEMONS! :)
The game finished 10 minutes ago and the result.... well, as they say, near enough is not good enough.
I thought I'll make a bit of an analysis, seeing as though I really don't have anything better to do.... so here goes....
The team:
Over all we played a good game of footy. Our disposal was absolutly shocking at times (as was Brisbane's) and it cost us in the long run. Good to see the guys didn't really run out of breath in the final minutes of the quarters and even Lee said it... we were more fit than they were, which is surprising seeing as though it was 30 degree and 80% humidity.
We were lacking a lot of hight in the forward line, something which was expected with the absence of Schwarta and Neita and also people like Vardy, and even Powell who can take a mark and kick the odd goal.
Some of the one on one match ups were redicilous, like Bruce being matched on Lappich who is bigger and stronger than him.
The best thing tonight for me was, the desperation. I hate it when they give up and let the other team run away with it. In the end Voss's goal was pretty hard to stop and there were a few decisions that didn't go our way, but we kept our hands in there, the boys were fighting all the way to the end and it was a good effort.
New Players-
Well what more can I say but brilliant. We had a very good set of youngsters tonight, all proved worthy of selection next week and all did their fair share to take on some of Brisbane's premiership players
The good-
Armstrong- An absolute champion that kid. He got straight into it, did some marvelous things. Kicked 2 goals in the process and was impressive all around. If Rigoni is put on the long term injury list, Armstrong is defenetly in with a chance to get his name on the senior list
Jamar- A very impressive ruckman I must say. He got in there and while he didn't always get hands first on the ball, he was always in there, he is good off the ground but he needs to work on his disposal and his ball handling off the ground. Over all he is a great 3rd ruck and he will be as good as Jolly if not better in no time.
Miller- Didn't see much of him, but when your first kick in AFL football is a goal than you know good things are to come (Broady's first kick was a goal too
). He did get in there and tried his luck in a few contests. He is tall which is handy and he will be a possibility in years to come when Schwarta has retiered.
Robbins- A major improvment from last week, he got more of a run and got his hands on the ball more. He is a bit of a dirty player as in he can't always get the ball out cleanly but that will come with time and experience.
Chelli- Second week in a row that Chell has impressed. He was everywhere tonight, ran brilliantly and did some very impressive things including a goal. Its good to see him taking on a leadership role during Neita's absence and lets hope he keeps up his good form during the season
Walshy- So much can be said for the guy, but sometimes he does these little things that you just can't go past. He will do the rough stuff, and the inspiring stuff. He will get in the packs and run along the boundry and he will even kick the odd goal. I thought that he was brilliant in every position he played, was it FB, CHB or Midfield. He is a class act!
Yze- Besides that stupid stupid report (see THE BAD!), Yze had another one of his usual games, the 20 odd possesions, the 2 goals, the impossible kicks and marks and so on and so on.... its not really a surprise to see Yze having a good game, he is a natural!
Biz- He is MUCH better than last week, did some good stuff in the forward line (he looks much more free up there) and got his hands on the ball in the backline a lot more. He laid a pretty impressive hip-and-shoulder and did some couragious stuff... well done to him, he has proved a real winner in the trading period! (HEHEHEHE Suffer Grgic you twit
)
Ellis- I would also like to say a few things in regards to Ellis. I have been pretty hard on the pretty boy, and while he still done some stupid mistakes and while his disposal can be of a 60 year old grandma at times, he did improve a hell of a lot. He took more mark, his one-on-one was much better and he generally looked for confident which is always good.
The Bad-
Umpiring- Shocking is the only non-rude word that comes to mind. Some of the decisions made were redicilous. For example that mark taken by Brown I think it was (could be someone else....) in the 4th... come on but that would have to be the most pathetic mark I have ever seen, the ball touched the ground more than it touched his hands!
. Some of the decisions in regards to high tackles, and in regards to tackles over all were disgraceful. When Armstrong was tackles to the ground via his jumper nothing was done.... I think its called holding on but that could just be me....
Yze's report- WHAT ON BLOODY EARTH IS WRONG WITH THAT UMPIRE?? I'm sorry but that is weak. How many of those stomach tackles do we see in a game? 30?? I mean seriously the Brisbane player was acting like he is hurt *boo ****ing hoo*, and straight up Yze gets reported. Hopefully they will see how lame that tackle was and that Yze has a great record and they will drop the charges.... gees talk about stupid!!!
The damn bloody UGLY-
Shane "your captain" Woewodin- excuse me for a second while I try to recall when he had a good game last. What is up with that boy? He did some silly things, let Voss all over him to get a very crucial goal and he generally didn't get enough of the ball. He was our captain tonight but showed poor example to the rest of the team. He comes from WA, he should be used to the heat by now.... and he should be used to being tagged and he should be used to kicking a god damn ball. I'm sorry but some of the things he did tonight was plain dumb. Maybe they should rest him next week, bring him down to earth again.
Robbo- He was so desperate to do something impressive he nearly killed himself trying to take a mark 2 minutes before the end of the game. He told me himself that he is not fit, his words were: "I'm in a really bad shape, I'm nowhere near as fit as I was last year". So why does he play? because its Robbo and he is stubborn and he wants to play to prove a point and its silly. His knee is strapped up heavily and you can see he is favouring it a little bit, he is obviously not fit yet he wants to play and they let him... it is beyond me how he hasn't got a single goal in 1 match and it hurts me to watch him out on the ground and down on himself because he just can't do anything right!
Gary Lyon- I know he is a commentator and he has to avoid being biased but gees he really is going to extrem lenght. He really sh#ts me, as he constantly puts down Melbourne. He practically says we have no class, that no one expected us to be this close at any stage of the game let alone be ahead... I just don't get him. Not long ago he was our captain, he is one of Melbourne's favourite sons, and look at him now in his commentators chair, sitting and watching it all unfolds without one bit of encouragment. He makes me sick listening to his constant disapproval.... gees what have you done for the club lately?
My final say for tonight-
I enjoyed the match, he fought hard and we should have won but we didn't. Its annoying to see the game slip away in the last second, but we gotta remember that this is the regining premiers we are talking about... we did a damn good job and we should have holded on for a few more minutes but its all too late.
With our chances of making the finals well and truely over (of the pre-season comp that is), I think next week should really be a time to experiment with all the young ones. Don't risk players like Brown who are very injury prone, give Woey a rest, and maybe try Greeny in the midfield etc... next week should be a game to experiment with, and without risking anyone.
Go Dees!
