Has anyone noticed Egan plays rather unauthordoxed. He is often well infront of his man moving back with the flight of the ball into his opponent. He is particularly good at this and often takes marks from places I would consider myself out of position. Probably a player like Russell Robinson or Fevola could exploit this because they have great leaps and are very strong overhead in a pack situation but I don't think many others could.

It takes a lot of guts to play like this and confidence IMO. He gets crunched fairly regularly and I personally hate having my man so far behind that I can't see or feel where he is.

He has been very good this year and last. Paticularly given where he was taken in the draft. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this and knows why he does it. (make up for lack of speed?).

I would bet just about anything that in tennis he has a dynamite smash when people pop lobs up to him.

I couldn't tell you for certain why he does it, but it is an effective and legal way of entering a contest now that chopping arms and other more underhanded tactics are penalised.

Matty Egan is a very solid player who will be a future start and a All-Australian CHB IMO. He can read the play very well for a guy who has only been playing football for less than 5 years.

Matty is one of my favourite players at the Geelong as you can see he gives his all every single week.

From memory, we picked him up around pick 60 after been the VFL Full Back of the year. Like Stokes, has been an absolute bargain. Hat goes off to the recruitment department again!

Interesting observation, and quite correct, he plays it more like a forward then a defender, by always taking the front position and backing his judgement, rather then simply reacting to his opponents moves, and it works very well for him.

Also agree with TheHoff, he'll have a long and successful career as our CHB, very good player, and a good user of the ball.

For a player just on 30 games who has little background in the game, he reads the play really well.

Has little pace, so can struggle on a fast leading player, but will often beat ehm in a contested situation. However, his big asset is his size. He plants himself in front of players to shepherd or contest. Just too big for the opposition to move him.

The recruitment department's policy in the last two draft to use late picks on 21 year olds has been a big winner for us.:thumbsu:

Couldn't agree more. I think he's just a natural. He just seems to know where to go and how to position himself. With Scarlett and Harley to learn from you would think he'll only improve as well. Plus he's got immense courage - remember his first game against Richmond?

Not sure he needs to go to CHF - love him as he is. Could become a superstar.

Agreed 100%

Sooner or later he will have the odd wander into the forward line. The temptation to try a big bloke who can read the play and take a mark will be too much for Mark Thompson. And even if the experiment doesn't yield any goals, at least Egan will get to look at things from the forward's point of view, which will help him when he returns to the back line.

Get Egan into the forward line!!!
Get some grunt in to take his place, who can atleast handball,,, to Scarlet.
It's time to overweight the forward half with contesting marking players.

Why was he taken off when he kicked the goal? He was never the right player for defence today with the Doggies run. Much better where he can contest. He has taken the second most contested marks for the Cats this season.
