I hate maths, who else hates the millions of formulas that you have to remember. Bloody worst subject ever. Anyone else share the same view as me.

Theres a good chance i may have passed my pysics test, i didnt even bring my calculator with me, i was laughing watching the idiots in my class using calculators, but all those formulas kill me, there is way way to much for my liking.

i did maths studies and what a ridiculous subject that was, you learn so much useless crap

Like what, i actually asked my teacher is this even used by people, he said probably not, so you can imagine what happened.

yep totally agree, shit subject i hated it at school esp algebra

when u knew i had passed all my units in yrs 11 and 12
i just mucked around in maths like i didnt give a stuff

Maths is my strongest subject i just understand it so well. yes it is hard, and i don't work much.... but i am doing very very well in further maths 3/4 same in maths methods 1/2 and just picked up accounting

i can't remember most of it, like you said stuff with formulas which i learnt so i passed the test and have since forgotten, i remember doing stuff with logarithms, and geometric sequences or something, also a lot of algebra

The maths you learn at school isn't supposed to be used "by people" its to train your brain to be able to think in a certain way. Its useful for everyone to be able to work out problems in life using logic.

Do you watch movies with CGI deeman12? Do you use CDs? I know you use a computer, etc....Maths is the basis behind all those and much more!

Complex Mathematics may not be being used specifically by you, but you are certainly benefiting from it.

Not really, it all makes basic sense. There's logic behind all those formulas which you just have to understand.

Yep, and that can be applied to anything you learn. If you know the logic behind a theory, your set. Alot of people struggle because they try and memorise the rule/formula and dont see the wood for the trees, so to speak.

Agreed currently doing Studies and Spec remembering the formula is only half the way there, you have to know how to use it. At the moment we have a formula like

n
C .r^n x n^r something like that
r

Isn't that just probability?

And you're a nut, i'm just doing methods:D

Did a mid semester exam for a third year engineering maths unit.

Year 12 calculus is mickey mouse to second year maths at uni and second year maths at uni is mickey mouse compared to the maths unit I'm currently studying.

it's one of lifes great ironies that tradies use as much mathematics as anyone.

Ah, engineering maths at uni. was such fun  Lets do some integral calculus with imaginary numbers, then some fourier transforms, some laplace transforms and on and on it went.

I'm glad I decided to get a job as a programmer and have never had to use the stuff again. Through school I liked maths, but by the time I'd finished uni. it made my head hurt :p Hats off to those who've done even more full on maths, I was right at the edge of what I could wrap my head around by the time I didn't have to take any more maths subjects at uni.

Or ever use anything that comes from biological research. People would be surprised at the applications of mathematics.

Haha...that is not a tough formula. Also might I add that just memorising formulae is a bad idea. You need to know what they mean...then you won't need to just rote learn them.

I did Methods in high school, couldn't do Specialist because you had to do it by correspondence and I thought that'd be too tough and I only needed Methods for entry into my degree. I loved it, but I had a terrible teacher. I wish I could have done Specialist. The amazing thing is that those who haven't done Specialist have to take Beginners/catch up maths at uni if you want to continue with it. High school maths really is bloody easy in the grand scheme of things.

Ever have a year 11/12 teacher tell you words to the effect of 'high school can be as hard as it gets, you need calculus to get into courses like engineering but won't need to do a lot of this stuff again'?

Haha, yeah right.

My nephew completed a Phd in Astrophysics at Bristol Uni., in England. During his Masters studies, I asked him what he actually did. He said, "You know those tables of figures used by engineers to make calculations?" I said, "Yes, I've seen them use those." He replied, "Well, I write those tables."

After completing his Phd, he came back to Australia and worked for twelve months as a labourer on a road construction gang on the south coast of NSW. For all I know, he may still be doing that.

I'm doing First Year Maths at uni now. Spec Maths was a joke compared to this and I can only imagine what its going to be like in 2nd and 3rd years.

wasted my time in yr 12 busting my ass in methods, only to study law at uni. Calculus has never re-entered my life since.
Moral: Only waste ur time with it if you're good at it, need it for further study, or actually enjoy it.

Something tells me that methods mark might have helped you get into law ;)
