Just get the best available talent left at every pick...

We should only for best avaliable for our first 4 picks. For picks 51, 67 and potentially 81 we need to fill holes in our list such as drafting a ruckman unless a player of another position is considered a whole lot better by the recruiters. After all, its hard to judge who is the best avaliable at the late picks and hence we should be taking punts to fill holes on our list.

I think the draft is a bit more subtle than simply "best available versus needs". After all; everybody has a different take on what they classify as 'best available'. I like Carlton to draft players who may develop into the best available down the track even if they might not be there yet. You will find that your 'needs' will temper your opinion somewhere along the line anyhow. The last thing we want to do is draft a player just because he is 200 cm.

When I saw Essendon taking Armitage at 19 I felt like they picked our pocket.
No one wants Renouf more than me, but if he's there at 17, he'll be there at 19. pick 17 should be saved for the best available.

There were a lot of 'if"s in Burgan's phantom draft, but he was the first to admit it. Simply put, there are too many variables to make an accurate prediction. There's 0% chance of the draft actually ending up like that, but it was a good read nonetheless. At least we get a heads-up on a couple of speculative picks. His information comes from reliable sources.
