Like I've said now three times: This is Misfud's quote from THAT media conference last week where all this became public.


"When people start talking about race as part of a recruiting decision, and then splitting that out to be a question of mixed race, fundamentally people are going into areas they have no idea about. It is ignorant and offensive," he said.

Is it also ignorant and offensive to have a match between the Aboriginal All Stars vs the White Dudes. Isn't the mere concept of this offensive with racial overtones??
Does this not promote the them vs us mentality, I thought we were trying to promote a united Australia were we are considered equal.
Yet the AFL actively promotes games that separates the aboriginal people from the whites.
What other multicultural country promotes these types of sports events where indigenous people play the whites?

Yet when Matty makes comment where he is genuinely trying to assist in aboriginals having longevity in our game he is a racist and his remarks are offensive.

Not sure why Thomas would have spoken to him back then. No one knew anything of it back in January.

I'm confused, didn't this only "air" last week? The meeting was in January, but this only became public last Thursday I thought.

Maybe "to print" was the wrong choice of words, but my understanding through all of this is that the comments have been in circulation since the January meeting between Rendell/Mifsud. Could be wrong, I dunno.

Speaking of delayed reaction, here's a piece that Mifsud wrote in the Age on 2/3/2012 in response to the comments from Paul Roos and James Hird regarding the sub rule and Aboriginal recruitment:

I get a real warm and fuzzy from this bit:

The logical application of their statement is that we should manage out Cyril Rioli, Liam Jurrah and Chris Yarran because they can't run 15 beep tests and revert back to the dark - and not so secretive - days of race-based draft selections. Of course, this is absurd.

So, despite Rendell's "offensive" comments being made in January, in early March when he wrote this, the very thought of race-based draft selections was "absurd" to him.

I think we just cracked this one wide open folks...

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou would not elaborate on the remarks, but they are seen to be equally as offensive by the AFL.

He's implying if he wrote an article in early march saying we would REVERT to race based selections.. that he believes it isn't happening now. Or I think that's what he is saying.

Whilst I was very moved by Matt last night - it appears there is more to be heard here. Let's hope it all comes out - for everyones sake.

I still think education and redemption here, if actually required, is far more important than protecting the AFC brand.

The bottom line is Rendell would have been sacked by Demetriou if Triggy didnt act which Triggy knew.
Now if Triggy went against Demetriou, Demetriou would have found a way to get rid of Triggy as well long term.

I dont want to be harsh on Triggy, beacause they are good people down at the crows.

But he was in a lose-lose situation.

What would you have done?

What would have a strong president like Eddie or Kennett have done is probably a more appropriate question.

Whether we like them or not, I think they would have told Demetriou to stay out of it and would have given Rendell the opportunity he requested to explain himself further before making any decision on terminating Rendell's tenure at the AFC.

It would appear that Trigg and Chapman caved in to Demetriou's pressure far too easily.

Not much really that's new there anyhow, still smells more and more like a stitch up to me!!!

One thing I will say however, if Matty thinks Mifsud is still a mate he's a better man than me, would certainly not be on my Christmas Card list anymore.

My opinion, if Mifsud was a "real" mate he would have said straight away the remarks were out of line, not bring it up months later. With mates like Mifsud, I'd hate to see Matty's real enemies!!!

Well, Mifsud wrote an article about Aboriginal recruitment on March 2, at which point he effectively says that race-based selection isn't happening and the thought that it could happen in this day and age is bonkers.

Two weeks after that article, he is quoted in another article citing Rendell's alleged comments that indicate that race-based recruitment is happening right now - this is based on comments/information that he learned about in January.

So...if he genuinely believed that Rendell's comments were offensive and an issue, why didn't they appear in the March 2 article where he's highlighted this very issue?

The though process behind Rendell's academy is that the aboriginal kids need to be taken away from their parents and cared for by white people in order to be able to contribute to the AFL.

Confirms it all as bullshit I reckon.

1. We could have heard all this last week.

2. We keep hearing misfud was deeply offended.. by Trigg and Caro, we are still yet to hear misfud say it.

3. Dispite being outraged misfud kept quiet for a very long time.

4. Misfud has not communicated his anger to rendell... at any stage.

5. As ruscy points out Misfud writes an article about how this doesnt happen in afl, after the alleged incident.

6. Misfud allegedly appeals to the crows to not sack rendell.

I know most of you don't but I support your club which includes Trigg and Misfud and the AFL on their stance on the issue.

I feel sympathy for Rendell that he made comments like, "IF I have offended anyone" and not realised the ignorance of his ways. I guess most of you who support Rendell fall in the same boat.

I believe in time most of you will realise how hurtful and ignorant these comments and to even suggest the AFL is blinded by the issues of indigenous remote communities is insulting at best. In fact they have know of these issues even before some of you were born.

If fact the AFL tries it's best to accommodate players from all walks of life, and is continuing to do so even more extensively as time goes by. For example Indigenous players represent 10% of the AFL players list as opposed to the 2.5% of the Australian population. You need think about that before you point the finger.

Regardless of the comments made, and only three people really know what was said in that meeting, the AFL's handling of this issue demonstrates a really cynical attitude to race issues in general.

If offensive comments were made in a private meeting, why wasn't the matter handled either at that private meeting or at a subsequent private meeting? Why wasn't mediation offered?

Instead, the AFL chose to have Mifsud leak this to the Age right after the Liam Jurrah incident, ensuring it blew up into a major media issue and grew legs of its own. You have to wonder what their intent was because surely the only conclusion was going to be 1) Rendell's sacking and 2) the issue would be promptly swept under the carpet because no other club official would dare be so candid again, for fear of similar reprisal.

The AFL handled Hird and Roos privately after their recent comments about indigenous players and the 2-2 interchange rule - and those comments were made on TV. I'm not sure why Rendell wasn't handled in the same way unless the AFL deliberately chose to make an example of him to try and drive these sorts of comments/attitudes underground because they lack the courage to have a public debate of the issues concerned.

It is understood that Mifsud, who was working in Darwin last Friday, attempted to persuade the Crows not to remove Rendell and that he spent some weeks of soul searching before revealing his misgivings regarding his views to Demetriou.
