Does everyone know about his recent bout of ill health? His appendix burst and has lost about 14kg. Should really hamper his pre-season.

Dude, I hope you are joking. One thing you need to know is never joke about players getting hurt or being ill on this board, coz you will be buried alive if your lying.

Well all I know is that he had his appendix removed about 2 months ago. I wasn’t aware of any weight loss but I highly doubt he is lying.

Yeah there was something in the Sunday Mail about it a little while back. Can't remember the details, just that he'd had an infection from the appendicitis that took longer to get over than they'd hoped. But it didn't sound that serious, although a setback. I assumed he did the KI camp, if he did he must be ok now.

Wouldn't he be close to death if he lost 14kg? Surely this can't be right?

Just to set the record straight he did have some problems after his appendixs where removed and did loose about 14 k but has since put back 7 k (in the last month )as of last Sat 9th. He is now swimming 1 k a day , is stationary bike riding and doing some weights and is allowed to start running around the 20 th. He will build the swimming to 2/3 k a day as of next week.
His appetite is great his attitude is unquestionable and he will properly only miss the 1st couple of pre season games . The club are not worried as his work ethic is only second to Wilson .

The club has finally confirmed Matt's health issues. From the Krakouer & Co article;

MEANWHILE, Matt Thomas, who joined the club this time last year, remains in Melbourne. Thomas had a bout of appendicitis just prior to the team's trip to London, and had his appendix removed. Following that he received an infection which put him back in hospital. Thomas lost a signficant amount of weight, but is recovering well and has begun training back in Melbourne. Thomas will re-join the group in the New Year.

If the kid gets himself right to be available for rd1, I reckon it will confirm all my thoughts about his work ethic and toughness.

Don't underestimate how far back he has fallen, having two months off and losing 14kg, most of which would be muscle. He has to do a lot of work to get back to his normal level and then surpass the kids who have done a full preseason and he will be competing against for positions.

I wish him well, he's one of my favourites, but I will presume nothing. Remember how confident some people were that Tredders work ethic would get him right for Rd 1 last year. Some injuries require more than a great work ethic.

From this article on Choco signing on for another couple of years is the news that Matty had part of his intestine removed due to the infection from the appendix operation ... even Choco's not sure when Matty will be back.

Young Power defender Matt Thomas is not quite as cheery as his coach after the half-back lost 14kg from an abdominal infection after an appendix operation two months ago.

The infection led to Thomas having a section of his intestine removed in a Melbourne hospital.

Thomas is not expected to return to training until next year and Williams said he was uncertain about his recovery.

"He's put about seven or eight kilos back on but imagine losing 14kg from 89kg," Williams said. "I just don't know when he'll be back (training)."

Good grief. A bowel resection due to an infection following an appendicectomy! Makes it seem like his appendix must have burst. Scary stuff.

I was told this in confidence so I didn't mention it. But that's why I said that it will be highly unlikely that Matt will be ready by Rd1. Now that the operation on his intestine has been made public I hope people will understand why Matt will probably have a slow start to the season and that he might not make the progress he has the potential to make in his second year, if injury free.

I would have thought he'd be long recovered from the operation and not jeopardising anything by playing. What would hold him back would be the loss of conditioning that's occurred. This would be very significant and given the fitness requirements to play in the AFL it's hard to imagine him being able to perform at a sufficient level until well into the season.
