When did he say that? My point has been the year he was ready to play we didn’t pick him earlier because of an error in judgement when Nicks didn’t think Worrell and Doedee could play together and as Nicks does he went for experience even if Doedee was injured and his form was poor.

I’m correcting this fantasy that we picked Worrell only when he was ready.
Worrell himself said he was handled well as he had a lot of issues with his body - and indicated he probably hadn’t done the best prep work to get him to AFL level. I agree with your Doedee Nicks comment - but also Worrell didn’t think he was ready. Interview earlier this year

Who is likely to win Coach of the Year this year? Macrae favourite - who do you think is clear second favourite?

Not the interview Is as looking for but he covers most of it here

Perhaps the coaches had reasons for not picking him until a bit later?

January 2024. He’s talking about the past, not that he wasn’t ready to play until near the end of 2024.

You say you agree with me about Nicks not picking Worrell because of Doedee and then throw up this bullshit that the coaches may have had reasons. I’ve given you the reason.

As for coach of the year, if we made the finals like we should have in 2024 would he be a contender? The rise looks great but it’s to be expected given our draw, development of our squad, recruits and no injuries. I predicted us 3rd after I did the ladder predictor, where did you have us.

How much of the improvement has been Nicks, how much Davis? We’ve had Dawson talk up Davis early, Worrell saying Davis has given us levers when we had only had a one wood and now Curtin crediting Davis for the wing move.

Not putting the improvement all on Nicks. No teams become top teams because of the head coach - they are a key part though in setting the tone.
We had the worst group of young players in our history when Nicks joined us. We have greatly improved that - and our recruiting - which makes a huge difference. Nicks overall man management and culture building though is undoubtedly strong. Every time you criticise him re a player - that player has stayed and developed well. Thats not all happening in spite of Nicks

What you talking about Willis?

I can’t criticise him for his lack of judgement in picking an injured Doedee ahead of Worrell and believing both players can’t play together?

That’s a perfect example of his poor lack of judgement.

Plus there’s players that I’ve criticised him about that have either left or have remained and are shit, McHenry and Murphy for example.

If Davis holding Nicks' hand is what it takes to make the eight and win finals, I'll take it.
How obvious does it need to be.

See Curtin in a recent interview say it was Davis that had chatted to him about the wing role pre season.
All the while Nicks was still stumbling around with his worn out line of "we don't know where to play him"

This club has been picked up and taken by Davis, it is a completely different mindset we are seeing play out.
The fact he has managed to implement so much while not being the head coach speaks volumes for how empowered he is by club officials.

I don't know how seriously I'd take anyone public comments about how they became AFL ready. The guy who took three-four years to breakthrough is going to say that the extra time and prep is what made them, whereas the one who got given time early will say it was having the confidence of the coaches etc.

How embarrassing that Nicks has only just got ahead of our worst ever coach after nearly 6 years.
Well, it's better than NOT getting ahead of Shaw I guess......?

Nah, he was perfect from day one and it was all mean old Mr Nicks and his stubborn ways not gifting games, how dare he have standards and expectations of his players

Wow, how can you possibly type the above with a straight face when up until last week Nicks is still selecting Murphy??

Nicks has standards and expectations!!
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

I suppose you could mean Nicks could 'expect' Murphy play to a very 'low standard'

Yeah, there's no control where we can see what Worrell is like if he's thrown in the deep end and played every game or whatever.

You can only really judge results. Worrell is doing great, well above par given his draft pick and the start of his career. Has the coaching/management helped that vs some alternative approach? No idea, but you certainly can't say it's held him back meaningfully.

Personally I think they probably missed the ideal time to select Worrell by a couple of months or so. Should have been in the mix earlier in 2023. But that's just a guess.

Where 'should' we have finished last year? 8th? I'd say Nicks would still be very much in the running for coach of the year off a jump like that given we are sitting third and 4th favourite for the flag. If we finished top 4 maybe not, but then he would have been in the running last year.

In a world where we made finals last year that would also be an unbroken record of improvement every season for Nicks, which is pretty impressive for a rebuild trajectory if we are considering it from a body of work PoV.

At this point the main question for Nicks is whether the form of the last 2-3 months continues for the rest of the season. If it does it's a very successful season by any measure and he would be right in the mix. I do note our 8-2 run coincides with Jordon Butts being selected - maybe that's the secret sauce and we fall off a cliff now.
