Not sure about half a season, but would agree it appears to be much more dialogue in the coaching box now that game 1. Probably more with them getting used to each other & working out their roles.

Ie. Davis call a move & Nicks says go for it!

better late than never. teething problems were probably always going to be a thing.

I had a weird dream last night. We were playing Collingwood in a prelim at AO, and I couldn't check the scores until after it was over. Saw on TV that we had won by 68 goals to 1.0 or 0.1 (wasn't clear).

Then started crying while talking to Malcolm Blight and saying that the last time we thrashed someone in a prelim, the next week was heartbreaking and I couldn't cope with that again. Was then consoled by Blighty before he got into a car and drove off.

Not sure what it all means.
Ah well. At least we beat Collingwood by 400 points. I wonder if Thilthorpe kicked 20?

Would be good if we can show them how it's done!

I wont be upset!

Ive seen a few Port posters on face book posts say they laugh at Crows fans because Port live rent free in their heads. Well its true. If we do win a premiership I will probably think about it 119 times a day.

It means you have to get off the weed bro

Don’t lie. You aren’t enjoying it. You are nitpicking every single thing, trying to score points and trying to prove your now somewhat outdated premise that Nicks is still a shit coach. It’s a sad little man who won’t adjust his thoughts and beliefs even when mounting evidence to the contrary exists. Clearly Davis has enhanced the coaching team - that’s what he was brought in for after all. Nobody is arguing that. But he is just one cog in the overall mechanism with Nicks remaining the controlling factor. What will you do if we do miraculously win the whole shebang? Declare it wasn’t Nicks, it was Murray Davis? Still demand Nicks be sacked? What is your end point here?
What a strange way to enjoy a holiday 😃

No doubt our coaching team has improved. Can you tell me how Nicks has improved?

That would be an interesting question for a brave soul in the media to put to Nicks (especially if his name is continued to be mentioned as a Coach of the Year contender). How has your coaching improved this year?

I honestly don't know, but I think there has been a notable change during the season from the Brisbane game, when we pulled the right levers at the right time to win it in the last quarter. Formula One football, followed by clamping down and playing smart at the death.

There's a hard edge and belief from that moment that has stuck with this team. Is it trust within the coaching group? Is it trust of the coaches with the players in situations when they are down? (like Q1 vs the Hawks)

Is it organic growth where both the players and coaches know their abilities, and have bought into each other and backed it in? The last couple of weeks we're taking risks again late to win the game, throwing Curtin in the middle, throwing Rankine in there for an extended spell.

Something has definitely changed, and it's working. Against good opposition as well, which is a major point of difference.

I'm enjoying the season. I just really, really, really want another flag and won't truly have fun until we do. One more Crows flag and I'm set for life. Honestly.

I'll be happy for the next 10-15 years at least, any longer than that and it starts to get a bit shit again. But nearly 30 years since our last one, given the number of nearly there's we have had is just bloody depressing. I sincerely hope we can bring it home this year.

lol, I’m not enjoying the season and I’m lying. Oh Jenny, that’s a classic even for you. I tell you what, do you want me to take a photo of me smiling or celebrating a goal or a win? I will if you promise not to enlarge it and put it on your wall.

As for lying, I’m not nitpicking every single thing, so you’ve outed yourself as the liar.

Now I’m a sad little man. Wow, how would it be if I called you a giddy large woman?

As for evidence, I provided some and I’m attacked. I posted Walkers comments. Don’t like them, go after Tex.

If we win the Grand Final I would have been on about my 10th beer and celebrating hard. I can FaceTime you if you like.

I will be very thankful that Nicks didn’t **** it up and will give him credit for being a good motivator, a good culture coach. I’ll be thankful that we hired Davis to cover his failings, for Burgess giving us a healthy list and for list management for the squad we’ve put together. Oh and Nicks again, without his shit coaching we wouldn’t have the high draft picks.
I don’t think it is necessarily failures. No one leader has it all. Those who claim they do are usually despots. Every leader has blond spots, weaknesses and strengths. You recruit people who are strong where you are weak. It’s the way leadership teams work and at the moment it is a success story - up until this point. The club seems to have built a well rounded team. Gettable just said we are one of the shining examples of a list build in the AFL. Like you I want flags out of all this but credit where it is due right now.

Nicks was more or less asked something like this a couple of weeks back (what’s changed and how have you improved as a coach) and said something along the lines of ‘I’m surrounded by great people now’, used the word trust a lot, and listed off Dawson, Walker and the coaching team, and said he felt he was a better coach back in 2020/2021 than he is now, but what’s changed is the team he has around him. This was a post-game interview after a win and said in a semi-jokey sort of way. He also talked a bit about how the team has grown together as a group and embedded an effective system etc.

I guess people can make their own mind up about how seriously to take that claim, but I think generally Nicks’ style is very much to let others take the lead and feel they are driving decisions rather than to be the main authority. I doubt he’s ever going to talk up his own improvement as a coach - actually I don’t think many other coaches would either.

Not sure how any coach could say something like this?
It doesn’t make any sense really.

Thank you for your take on this

Like FR0GGY Im slightly confused - it sounds very much like an assistant rather than head coach speak '' let others take the lead and feel they are driving the decisions '' - like saying they have to pick the kids up from swimming lessons yeah?

I think he is coaching better now than ever before BECAUSE he has a team around him - not in 2020 - thats cack

There is no doubt there is significant improvement - and to my eye all from this year - why that is can be discussed elsewhere - and this improvement can also be shown to be an amalgam of what Nicks brought before

It felt like he was distancing himself the Davis influence by mentioning 2020

Yeah I think the 2020 thing was sort of a self-deprecating joke, like he was deflecting the implied praise involved in asking what he had done to improve the team.

But I do think the ‘it’s about everyone else, not about me’ thing is a genuine leadership style and pretty much the way Nicks handles everything. Rather than telling people what to do you help them reach the obvious conclusion about what to do based on all the previous work the team has done to enhance buy-in. And this extends to the media, so whenever a major move happens he will usually talk about how it was the player’s idea etc.

Rankine this weekend credited Nicks with the move to the midfield at half time, but previously I’ve heard Nicks say Rankine just goes where he wants when asked about the midfield/forward split. I assume the actual decision making process is somewhere in the middle.

As far as Davis goes I don’t think he was trying to deflect anything away from Davis specifically, and he didn’t come up. It was more like if Thilthorpe kicked 12 this weekend but only wanted to talk in the media about the effort of the boys collectively.

I think nicks could do with talking about individuals a bit more, he did the other day with Curtin, and I don’t think it hurts every now and again to pump up, praise or defend a player individually.
You hear Scott and Hardwick do it regularly.

He's quick to praise individuals anytime someone mentions a young player doing well in the reserves

Other individuals

I think it means you shouldn't eat Curry close to bedtime :)
