As some of our injured players come back, our oldsters play themselves back into form, and our youngsters come on strong, I see Matty becoming increasingly marginalised. Is there any place for him in our team, other than depth? Personally, I'd like to see him given a sustained run in the forward pocket. I just feel he has something which hasn't yet been exploited.

i'd like to see him succeed too, and think he has a role to play at AFL level.

problem is, who do you want out?

Needed to catch the wave currently being surfed by Brown, Crouch, Kerridge, Lyons, Lynch and Laird.

Think he's missed it though and with no draft pick currency, club will be looking harder that normal at trading players to improve the list.

See him heading for Queensland

You could ask the same questions of Petrenko, Martin & Riley.

Sadly, I think Pets has done his dash. We now have others doing his schtick, only better. But I do feel the same about Martin. I've seen Twinkle Toes show flashes of brilliance and I'd like to see him given more opportunity.

I was at Martin's first AFL game against St Kilda at the Docklands. We got spanked that night and Martin was the only one who took on the game... Then he did his knee the very next game against Port -

I've always had a soft spot for him because he impressed so much that night on his debut -

Interestingly it's was St Kilda he carved up in round 22 of 2010 at AAMI. He played across half back and dominated. Terrible shame he has not gone on with it. Will be in the trade gun this year

Im a huge fan also. He has not been given a credible chance. A player needs to have faith put in hime for at least 5-6 weeks straight. Brodie has not been given this. Yes he does take the game on and I think he has got to come in. The games he has played it has been as a sub coming on in third quarter. I see something in this kid if he can stay injury free

I wouldnt be trading Martin or Riley. As our senior players start to dissapear in the next year or two they will get their oppertunities to break into the team. Would trade Pet's though, don't see him doing enough to earn his spot in his team. He really needs to recapture his best form of last year but don't see him doing it with consistincy so he's gotta go.

Jaensch was looking better with each extra game he got but a worry whenever he is kickout out from goal. I would hold onto him for awhile and pump a few more games into him this year.

So I need a new favourite player? Who? :(
Don't give up, form changes and Riley could still get another go.

He looked really promising at the start of the pre-season; he was BOG in our minigame against Port. Shame he kind of fell away and picked up a minor injury at the start of the season.

I just think 3 things are going to stand in the way
- Crouch is always going to be fast tracked in one of those HF/mid spots.
- Lyons is a more natural midfielder.
- Riley's gimmick of 'tackling machine' has been taken over by a younger and cleaner model in Laird.

Totally thought this thread was gonna be about Matty Jaensch

Agreed OP, would like to see him played in position in the forward pocket for more than 2 minutes. Started forward, was promising there then we decided to make him a defender. Bla. Get him back forward he knows where the goals are. Just watch the Carlton replay. Slick. We must've nearly put 50 games into him, lets see what he can do in his natural position. If it doesn't pay off then trade him but I'd hate for us to trade him to someone who sticks him in the pocket and gets a damaging forward we didn't know we had, especially now that we essentially have no forwards

I don't think Pets is done just yet.

In order of our depth/needs here is my ranking of the 4 (most needed to least needed).

1. Pets
2. Jaensch
3. Riley
4. Martin

Also looking at the positions that each player plays:

Pets - small forward - really there is nobody on our list who plays this position. Admittedly its a sad sign when resting midfielders get the nod ahead of him. I still think Sando rates him highly and once our dysfunctional forward line has started to gel - he might find his way back into the side. Don't think he is going anywhere at the end of the year.

Jaensch/Martin - small defender/rebounding defender - They have Reilly / Smith / Brown / Laird ahead of them. Think we will be getting rid of one (either trade or delist) and I think it will be Martin.

Riley - Waaay back in the pecking order now. Is an inside mid everyday of the year. Has Thommo/Van Berlo/Danger/Crouch/Kerridge/Lyons ahead of him. Delist.

I have a feeling he'll be used to get us back in the draft.

Your classic, 26th man IMO. Wouldnt surprise me to see him go to a Gold Coast, or a Bulldogs, and actually become a decent footballer.

Jaensch needs to be played forward, he isn't tight enough playing as a small defender and he is way to attacking to no be left close to the big sticks. Also with a boot as deadly as his, there is every chance of nailing long goals which could work well when opposition teams flood

Sorry about the matty jaensch thread not being adhered to but regarding jared petrenko I as well think he still has something to offer. He must be played in the guts that is his only position ,I cannot understand the coaching staff at all .defensive forward for Christ sake he shits himself in front of the gaols! He is a fast ,bullicking player with great evasive skills . All he has to do is get hold of the footy and move it forward,in this he is a natural but as a forward blind for freddy can tell he isn't one of them.

If his footy career doesn't work out he can always go into the Adult film industry. Any of you blokes seen the self taken nude photo of him doing the rounds? Heyzues!

Sorry mate. Us Crow supporters don't really get into the gay pr0n scene;)

Can you send it to me:p

I always thought the guy would make it at the AFC, but it is becoming apparent he won't.

he isn't worthy of a much more than a 3rd rounder, but I wonder if it is a case of trying to improve our 3rd rounder by dealing with someone like Melbourne, Dogs or even the GWS who may see some value in him + our 3rd for their 3rd.

Out of these 4, for me Martin has the most upside & has the ability to be our best-22. He is not a small rebounding defender, but an outside midfield/forward. Would like to see him given a decent run in this role, when the opportunity arises (I woud play him this week instead of Porps).

IMO, Jaensch played the equal of Brown in defence, but having said that Brown has more upside as a defender as he more natural in this role. We should try Jaensch more as a small forward - if a vacancy arises, but at the moment he is a depth player.

Petrenko has been surpassed by the likes of Kerridge who has shown you need to add some offence to your defence. Pets needs to work on this & earn a recall. Now behind in the queue.

Riley is well behind our new midfielders in the queue. He is a solid ball-getter, but lacks polish to make it IMO. Having said that, if have a bad injury run with our inside mids, then he may get a chance.

Would look to trade any of these players if we could get some value for them.

If you cannot perform at AFL level in the role you are given then tough shit, either move clubs or quit and let someone else have a crack.

It is a business, a professional sport. Not baby time lovey dovey "my boys" circle jerk love and support business.

Either you succeed or you do not. In the words of Yoda, "there is no try". There is no place for misassigned maternal garbage, get your own kids, these aren't kids for the most part they are adults, adults engaged in employment.

Edit: Not directed toward Jaesnch specifically.

The problem is how does he fit into the side? We've seen how much trouble Lyons has had breaking in to the side despite dominating at SANFL level. Our inside midfielder quota is pretty much full. Perhaps if Wright ends up going out at some point (I hope he doesn't) then Petrenko might find an opening there?

I agree he's got something to offer, but if he can't get back into the side because there's no spot for him, it makes sense to try to trade him for something we can actually use. Assuming we can get something for him, of course. No point trading him for pick 40 or 50.
