Great!!

Ricco's out, Gazza's in doubt. Just the start to the day I was after:mad:

The one upside to this is Matty Stokes must debut! Has been a consistant preformer in the VFL. Is of similar build to gaz. With 5 years playing senior footy in Darwin/Adelaide/Geelong he is ready.

Must say I'm So pleased for matty. I knew him in Darwin and he is a really good kid. His first season in the senior for the Palmerston Maggies as a 16 yo was really impressive:thumbsu:
He was in a league of his own mainly playing on ball and on the wing. Was always heavily tagged. Was taken out one game in a nasty incident that earnt his offender 15 weeks!!! He represented NT in the U18 carnival that year and was named All Aust. All this at 16.

I for one was rapt when he was selected in this years draft, and by Geelong was a bonus :) He has really worked hard to earn this chance...

The recruiting staff have done it again, at 61 he will be the "diamond in the rough" of 2005 draft. This kid is something special, has a real "X factor" about him. Just makes things happen. The AFL is obviously a huge step up from the leagues he has played in but i think matty is up to the challange.

Really hope he debut's today, so all can see why I really rate this kid:thumbsu:

Yeah sure did... copped a nasty elbow to the face, which left that scar near his eye

Matty Stokes is a top little player and let's hope he can take his chances and show us all he is capable of. He has a good football brain. Good luck to him from another Darwin man (myself).

Exciting goal sneak from Woodville-West Torrens. Hated the guy when we played against them, very exciting player tho. definetely knows where the goals are

Did alot more with the ball than half his more experienced comrades. On that alone he deserves to keep his spot.

One thing that hit me was his crisp disposal. Knows how to use it!

Yep, i remember seeing the incident when Matty got smashed at Marrara Oval in Darwin.

At the time all the talk was about how Matty was a future star, and i remember thinking when the incident happened that it was a deliberate ploy by the opposition to take him out cos they knew he was a threat!

So pleased he is at Geelong! Will provide the flair for our future along with Varcoe! Can't wait!

He is a great player, one I kept on saying "Why the hell isn't he playing AFL" when he was in the SANFL. He is a thinker and uses it well, clean skills and can kick goals when on fire. Think he kicked 8 from HFF in a final once in SANFL.

Really liked him last week, and he has had a great first half against the Weagles. NAB rising star nomination soon? Or is he to old or something?

Yeah, I'm not sure on that one? Have heard must be 21 or under and stokesy is 21 now. But your right, I thought his first 2 games were good but was obviously getting a feel for the tempo. His game against wce was easily worthy of a nomination and watching his first half today i think he feels he belongs :thumbsu:

Gotta love his attack on the ball, he laid a great bump on sandilands coming off the square that set up a forward thrust. Brilliant !!!

Not a bad choice at 61, as i said earlier :)

Stokes is reviving dying art of roving

Wednesday, June 21

IT was all over for the rover in the AFL, but pocket-rocket Mathew Stokes is reviving the art.At 178cm tall, he lives at the feet of the towering rucks, lurking around centre bounces, pinching goals. The 21-year-old from the Northern Territory has only played four games for the Cats and has already made his mark.
He launched his AFL career with 11 touches and five marks in round 6 against Richmond. But it was his fierce attack on the ball and ability to find space that set him apart.
Ruck coach Peter Keenan yesterday said the rover was disappearing at elite level in favour of taller ruck-rovers who could play in a variety of positions. The craft was almost forgotten.
Geelong's established onballers - Cameron Ling, Paul Chapman, Joel Corey, Gary Ablett, James Kelly and Jimmy Bartel - are all an average 185cm tall.
Keenan said it was a relief to see a genuine rover back on the ground, breaking up packs for the Cats.
``If you don't have pig dogs, you don't have results,'' Keenan said.
``The ruckman is the last of the dinosaurs and the rover disappeared a few years ago. But the rover is starting to come back, using explosive pace in and under.''
Former Cats captain and star rover Andrew Bews was excited to see another small fast man for Geelong living around the contest.
``As a small rover, to the purists, I would suggest he (Stokes) genuinely fits the bill,'' Bews said.
``Stokes has that true roving quality in that he can kick goals and that is something we have lacked.''
Bews said Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy was a firm believer is the value of the genuine rover and his ability to turn a game.
``I used to talk to Sheedy about rovers and he always made special mention to me as I was coming through about not losing the craft, maintaining the craft,'' he said.
``He had Tony Buhagiar, Daisy Williams, Allan Ezard, Stephen Clarke, all blokes who could rove and kick goals. They were all blokes who would go back of the centre line, they weren't just feeders.
``What I like about Stokes is that he is not one to take it either. He got hit hard a couple of times last week and he just bounced up and made a mental note of who it was and you can bet they've gone into the memory bank. He's got bit of character.
``If you notice, he's strong and he keeps his feet. You have to be able to do that.''
Former Victorian captain and silky-skilled Richmond rover Dale Weightman said the old-style rover was being overlooked to the detriment of the game.
``A good little bloke is essential to the team as long as their skills are spot on and they can break it up and get in and under the packs,'' Weightman said.
Weightman was known for his superb vision and evasive skills, and possessed a pinpoint pass.
``Rovers have to be special - running and reading the play and making sure they have the best skills on the ground,'' he said. ``They have to be pretty special.''
Stokes was an under-18 All-Australian player. He spent two years playing senior footy with SANFL club Woodville- West Torrens before his time finally arrived, drafted by the Cats with pick 61, their final pick, last year.
A string of outstanding performances in the VFL was enough to earn the hard-nosed midfielder a call-up.
